Chapter 2

On the other side of the town was a small family, all getting ready for the day. The home was small, but it was filled with absolute love and warmth. The home was located as the third home on the Lloyd Court. Inside the home was filled with more people getting ready for the first day of school and work. At the moment only three lights were on in the house, in the kitchen, and in the bathroom. The bathroom was decorated with blue walls, double sinks, a big mirror, a shower. It had a cross on the wall right above the light switch, and it had a picture of Selena Quintanilla next to the cross.     In the bathroom was a sixteen-year-old boy, he was tall for his age. He had curly charcoal hair, he was currently trying to tame it, by dressing it in hair gel. He was rubbing his hands together, before rubbing them on the sides, right above his ears. As he tried to tame his hair, his smokey black eyes were glued on an open book. It was SAT materials, he’s been working on the material all summer, the new school year was just about to increase his time with it. He had a short sleeve striped button-up shirt, with a black shirt underneath and khakis, that stopped right before his black, non-slip tennis shoes.     “Guillermo, it is only the first day of school,” a voice said. The young boy jumped and looked to see an older woman standing outside the doorway of the bathroom. She was holding a basket of dirty clothes, had a tired look on her face. The woman had short straight chestnut hair and smokey black eyes. “Go easy on yourself.” Guillermo didn’t mind his name, he just preferred to be called Gully, it was quick and easy. Guillermo just sounded so sophisticated; he’ll transfer to it once he gets his adult job. As of right now, he was going to stick with Gully.     "Lo Siento Mama,” Gully apologized before looking back at the material.” But if I want to get into a good college, I have to start studying now.”     “You have been studying all summer,” his mother brought up. “Don’t you want the first day of Junior year to be an ease for you? Or are you just gonna overwork yourself, like you have been all summer?” Gully’s mother…she was a complete overprotective mama bear at times, but he knows she means the best. His mother is Yessi from the beautiful land of Argentina, fell in love with his father on the way to America, and they had problems, figured them out, married and along came Guillermo and his younger brother, Moises.     “Mama, once I am all graduated, I will get a job, then move all of us out of this horror show of a town. Me, you, Papa, and Moises. No more of this stupid small-town crap. We will be in the city with all the big business people, shaking hands with famous people, being invited to the Oscars,” Gully dreamed.     “Dream all you want Mijo,” his mom said. “But you are only sixteen, try to make some friends this year, don’t isolate yourself with school, you’ll get lonely.”     “I have friends,” Gully said as he turned off the bathroom, they headed into the kitchen where a man sat. He was working on the morning’s crossword puzzle, cigarette in his mouth, his shoes sitting empty at his feet. His name was Xavier Pirrone, he had charcoal black curly hair, a long beard that was turning grey, and jade green eyes. he was the man of the house, the father of the children in the house, and the love of Yessi’s life. Xavier was from Puerto Rico, he misses is dearly, but he loves it here in Nox Town as well. He worked at a hotel as a manager for the night shift, and on the side, he does some landscaping. Once his landscaping business kicked off more, he was going to drop the manager job and focus on his business, he was very proud of it. Gully was proud of his father, everything his father put together always ended up looking like it should be on the home decorating channels. He wants to fix up their yard, but his wife thinks it looks fine.     “Why don’t you bring your friends around then?” his father asked.     “You wouldn’t like them,” Gully pointed out as he sat down and picked up a piece of toast from the center of the table. “You weren’t too fond of Lucy Esser.”     “I WILL NOT ALLOW SPOILED KIDS LIKE LUCY ESSER IN THIS HOUSE!” his father roared as he slammed his hand on the table and rose from his chair.     “Mijo, why don’t you make friends with the people at our church?” his mother asked.     “I like my debate team friends,” Gully informed.     “From the way you put it they all sound like spoiled rotten friends,” his father growled. “Not in this house!”     “Papa,” a voice said as another person trudged into the kitchen. It was a young boy, look like he was in the middle of his middle school career. His black charcoal curls stuck up all over the place, his hands rubbing his tired jade green eyes. “The thing that happened with Lucy Esser was two years ago.” The little boy was Moises, Gully’s little brother. He had     “SHE BROKE GULLY’S HEART!” Xavier pointed out as he rolled up the newspaper. “PEOPLE LIKE HER ARE NOW ALLOWED THIS HOUSE! ALL OF THEM ARE LITTLE DIABLOS!”     “You can’t let it go?” Moises asked as he took out the milk jug.     “Not till I see justice!” their dad growled as he pounded the table.     “Can I borrow the car for today?” Gully asked trying to change the subject.     “You got two legs, use them,” his mother ordered as threw a sock at him.     “You said it was the first day and I should take it easy,” Gully pointed.     “Getting smart with me?” Yessi asked as she held up another sock. “When I said take it easy, that doesn’t mean you can stop using your legs.”     “But- “Gully began to protest.     “You may be a debate champion, but that will get you nowhere with me,” Yessi warned. “Now get going before you are late.” Gully huffed and shook his head, before heading out.
