Chapter 1 Zoey point of view Four years of love mean nothing against a few weeks of betrayal. Some promises are easier to break than to keep. ~ I had just closed from my night duty and, as usual, if I was less stressed out, I used to visit my husband in the office to say ‘hello’ before going home, as his office was not too far from the hospital where I worked. I had just changed from my duty clothes to sweatpants and a T-shirt. “See you in the evening, Zoey,” said my chief resident. “Alright thanks, ma'am,” I shouted, before storming out of the hospital, straight to my car. Glancing at my wristwatch, it was already 9 in the morning, Joe was already in his office. I decided to stop in his office before proceeding home. I let out a sigh before starting the engine, then drove straight to Joe's office. I bought a cup of coffee before entering the building. Everyone knew me, so I walked in without any issue. “Hey, Mrs Joe,” “Hello, ma'am,” two staff members greeted me with a bright smile plastered on their faces. I returned their smiles with a soft nod before taking the elevator. The soft ding of the elevator notified me of my arrival. I stepped out and ran my fingers through my hair before proceeding to his office. When I reached his office, I noticed the secretary's desk was empty. My heart skipped two beats. It shouldn't be what I was thinking. For the past few weeks, Maya, his secretary, often spent more time in Joe's office than at her desk. As much as I didn't want to agree that there was something between them, signs kept coming. Maya was a hot b***h, in as much as I hated her, I couldn't deny the fact that she was really beautiful. Without hesitation, I walked to his door. I stopped and let out a heavy sigh, preparing myself for the worse. I held the door knob and twisted it. I scanned through the office with my eyes and no one was there. My shoulders sagged in relief. I bit my lower lips before turning around. I stopped at Maya's office again. Frowning, I pulled out my phone to call Joe. Maybe he was still at home, or he was already on his way. Let me know if I can wait for him, or if I should go. Just as I was about to dial his number, my eye cut an elegant box perched on Maya's desk. My eyes popped out. It looked like a gift a boyfriend gave his girlfriend or vice versa. Confusion stirred within me. As I looked closely, a write-up read ‘Happy Valentine's Day, sweetheart,’ was stylishly written on it. The unfamiliar handwriting sent a chill through me. My dedication to medicine has always guided my choices. I had totally forgotten that today was Valentine's Day. My chest tightened as I was trying to make sense of what I saw. Could she have bought these for Joe? No, it's not true! I shook my head, trying to brush it off. My thoughts spiraled, but before panic could consume me, I heard the door creak open and Maya stepped in. The moment she saw me, her face went pale like she had seen a ghost. “h..Hey, G..Good morning ma'am” she stuttered. “Welcome, please have a seat,” she added. Just as I opened my mouth to reply, I saw a distinctive paper bag she was trying to conceal behind her back. If I wasn't mistaken, that bag looked like a package of high-end women's jewelry. Drawing upon years of maintaining professional composure, I kept my expression as neutral as possible. My fist clenched, trying to suppress the rage in me. “And those are for?” I questioned. “ah.. Mr Joe told me to pick up these from a shop nearby,” she replied, her voice soft and soothing. Why do I have the feeling that she bought it for him? “Exciting! What about this valentine's gift on your table,” I asked. “Uhm, yesterday Mr Joe sent some money to me to make a valentine's package for him. I'm pretty sure it's yours ma'am,” she explained. I scoffed before gritting my teeth. “Is he in the office already?” I asked. “Yes ma'am, he is in a meeting in a private room with some clients, but I guess he will be done any moment from now.” Without a reply, I walked back to his office and sat, patiently waiting for him. I needed to remain calm and vigilant if I really wanted to uncover the truth. After a few minutes, which seemed like an hour, the door creaked open and Joe came in, holding the valentine's box I saw on Maya's desk earlier and the paper bag she held minutes ago. “hey! There she is my beauty queen. Happy Valentine's Day, sweetie,” he said before leaning in to kiss me on the forehead. His skin smelled fresh like he had just taken his bath. My stomach twisted as multiple thoughts crossed my mind. “These are for you babe," he said before handing the gifts to me. “Oh my God, really!” I shouted, trying to act surprised. “Yeah babe, anything for you, I'm glad you stopped by,” he said, hugging me tightly and pressing a soft kiss on my lips. Joe collected the box back and brought out an expensive bracelet before fastening it around my wrist. “The bracelet suits you perfectly,” he murmured before pressing his lips to my knuckles. “Thank you so much Joe,” “So what's the schedule for today? I'll come home early today and take you out for lunch. How about that?” he suggested. I hesitated before replying, “Okay, I'll be waiting,” “You look dull today, what's wrong?” “I'm fine, just stressed out. "You know, dealing with patients used to be overwhelming,” “Yeah, that's true, so tell me how many lives have you saved over the night?” he chuckled. “None, how was your meeting today?” “Meeting?” he asked, shocked. My heart skipped a beat. Did Maya lie to me?
