15 The drive to the quarry seemed to take forever. My heart was pounding so loudly I thought I could actually hear it above the sound of the engine. I played some rock music to drown out the noise of it, but it didn’t work. When I reached my destination, I checked to make sure no-one else was around. In the morning light, the quarry was no less eerie than it had been in the darkness. But at least the place was deserted. I’d half expected it to be swarming with police. I looked over the precipice. Brian was close to the vertical rock face, still bobbing in the water. I hoped that no-one had been out there before me and noticed him.
