The Betrayal
Sophia Hayes glanced at the clock on her phone for what felt like the tenth time.
7:00 p.m.
A smile spread across her face as she stepped out of the taxi, carefully holding a small black gift box against her chest.
Inside was the watch Daniel had admired every time they walked past the jewelry store downtown.
She had spent four months saving for it.
Four months of taking extra sewing jobs.
Four months of skipping lunch just to afford the one gift she knew would make him smile.
Tonight wasn’t his birthday.
It wasn’t their anniversary.
She simply wanted to remind him that someone believed in him.
As Sophia entered the Grand Crescent Hotel, she quickly sent him a message.
Sophia: I’m outside.
No reply.
She smiled to herself.
He’s probably in the shower.
The receptionist looked up politely.
“Good evening, ma’am.”
“Good evening. I’m here to see Daniel Brooks.”
The receptionist checked her screen.
“Mr. Brooks is already in Suite 1208.”
“Thank you.”
Sophia stepped into the elevator, excitement bubbling inside her.
In exactly three months…
She would become Mrs. Sophia Brooks.
She absentmindedly touched the engagement ring on her finger and smiled.
Life wasn’t perfect.
She wasn’t rich.
She still worked long hours as a junior fashion designer while dreaming of one day owning her own fashion house.
But none of that mattered.
As long as she had Daniel…
She believed everything else would eventually fall into place.
The elevator doors opened.
Suite 1208.
Sophia walked down the quiet hallway.
The closer she got, the faster her heart beat.
She raised her hand to knock.
Then stopped.
Someone laughed inside.
A woman.
Sophia frowned.
Maybe Daniel was meeting a client.
She was about to turn around, not wanting to interrupt, when she heard Daniel’s voice.
“I told you she’d never suspect anything.”
Sophia froze.
Her smile slowly disappeared.
Another voice answered.
Soft.
Playful.
A voice she knew better than her own.
Vanessa.
Her cousin.
“I almost felt bad for her,” Vanessa said with a laugh.
“But she makes everything so easy.”
Daniel chuckled.
“She’s too busy chasing wedding plans to notice what’s right in front of her.”
Sophia’s breathing became uneven.
No.
This couldn’t be happening.
With trembling fingers, she reached for the doorknob.
The door wasn’t locked.
It slowly opened.
The gift box slipped from her hand and hit the floor with a sharp crack.
Daniel turned.
His face immediately drained of color.
Vanessa looked over her shoulder.
Instead of panic…
She smiled.
“Oh.”
Her voice was almost casual.
“I guess you know now.”
Sophia couldn’t breathe.
Her eyes darted between the two people standing before her.
The white hotel sheets.
Daniel’s shirt lying carelessly on the floor.
Vanessa wearing the necklace Sophia had given her on her birthday.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The late-night meetings.
The canceled dates.
The unanswered phone calls.
The lies.
Daniel hurried toward her.
“Sophia…”
She took a step back.
“Don’t.”
“It isn’t what you think.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
She laughed bitterly.
“Really?”
Her voice trembled.
“Then tell me…”
“What exactly am I looking at?”
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“You weren’t supposed to find out like this.”
Those words hit harder than a slap.
Not…
I’m sorry.
Not…
I made a mistake.
Just…
You weren’t supposed to find out.
Sophia stared at the man she had loved for five years.
The man she had planned to spend the rest of her life with.
Slowly, she removed the engagement ring from her finger.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Sophia… don’t do this.”
She looked at the ring one last time.
Then gently placed it on the floor between them.
Her voice was calm.
Almost frighteningly calm.
“I hope the two of you are very happy together.”
Without another word…
She turned around.
And walked away.
She didn’t look back.
Not even when Daniel called her name.
Not even when Vanessa shouted behind her,
“She’ll get over it!”
By the time the elevator doors closed…
Sophia finally allowed herself to cry.
She hugged herself tightly as silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
Five years.
Five years of love.
Five years of believing she had found the person she would grow old with.
Gone in a single moment.
The elevator reached the ground floor.
The doors opened.
Rain poured from the dark sky outside.
Sophia stepped through the hotel doors without an umbrella.
Without a destination.
Without knowing where she was going.
She simply needed to get away.
Away from Daniel.
Away from Vanessa.
Away from the life she thought she knew.
The rain quickly soaked through her clothes.
She didn’t care.
She walked blindly down the street, tears mixing with the rain on her face.
Then she stopped.
Across the street stood a tall building illuminated by golden lights.
At the top was a rooftop bar.
Sophia stared at it for a moment.
Maybe she needed a drink.
Maybe she needed somewhere to breathe.
Maybe she just needed one night where she didn’t have to be the woman whose heart had just been shattered.
She wiped her tears.
Then stepped toward the entrance.
She didn’t know it yet…
But walking into that rooftop bar would be the first step toward a night that would change her life forever.
Because somewhere inside…
A mysterious stranger named Luke was waiting.
And neither of them knew that before the night was over…
their lives would become unexpectedly connected.
