The Girl Who didn’t Bow

Nora’s POV The sound of books striking the polished stone echoed across the courtyard. One… Two… Three… A notebook slid across the ground, stopping just inches from a pair of polished black shoes. Silence. The bustling courtyard, filled with hundreds of students only moments ago, had fallen so quiet that Nora could hear her own heartbeat. She remained frozen where she stood, still trying to steady herself after another student had slammed into her. “I… I’m so sorry!” the frightened first year whispered, his face pale as he quickly bent to gather the books. His hands trembled so badly that he dropped them again. Nora frowned. Why was he so terrified? She knelt beside him without hesitation. “It’s okay,” she said gently. “You didn’t do it on purpose.” The boy shook his head frantically. “No… you don’t understand.” His eyes darted toward the figure standing a few feet away. Nora followed his gaze. The young man hadn’t moved. He simply stood there, his hands tucked into the pockets of his tailored black trousers, looking down at the books scattered at his feet. He was taller than she’d imagined. Well over six feet. His jet black hair was neatly styled, though a few strands had escaped and rested carelessly against his forehead. His sharp jawline gave him an almost intimidating appearance, while his dark eyes remained unreadable. He wasn’t glaring. He wasn’t angry. He simply… Watched. The gold badge pinned to his blazer gleamed beneath the afternoon sun. For a strange moment, the entire courtyard seemed to revolve around him. “So…” Nora thought. “This is Xavier Ashford.” The name suddenly made sense. He carried himself with effortless authority. Not the loud, attention-seeking confidence she’d expected from the son of a billionaire. His presence alone commanded silence. No one dared break it. Nora picked up her last notebook and stood. “Sorry about that,” she said politely, brushing invisible dust from the cover. “It was an accident.” The courtyard collectively held its breath. Several students exchanged shocked glances. A girl standing nearby quietly whispered, “Did she just… apologize like that?” Another covered his mouth. “She doesn’t know.” “She has to be new.” Ava, standing several steps away, looked as though she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. “Nora…” “Please don’t say anything else.” Xavier’s gaze settled on Nora for the first time. His expression remained calm. Almost emotionless. Yet something flickered briefly in his eyes. Curiosity. It disappeared as quickly as it came. “You dropped these.” His voice was deep. Smooth. Controlled. He bent slightly and picked up the notebook resting closest to his shoes before holding it out toward her. Nora blinked. For some reason, she’d expected him to ignore it. “Thank you.” She accepted the notebook. Their fingers brushed for the briefest second. A strange sensation rushed through her body. Not painful. Not pleasant. Just… Unfamiliar. Almost like static electricity. Xavier felt it too. His hand paused for less than a heartbeat before he withdrew it. No one else seemed to notice. But neither of them missed it. Damien Cross, who stood a step behind Xavier, noticed the almost invisible hesitation. His brows furrowed. “That was odd.” Xavier looked at Nora for another second. “What year?” She frowned. “First year.” “I can see that.” Something about his tone irritated her. She folded her arms. “Then why ask?” Several students gasped. Damien slowly turned his head toward Nora. “She’s either incredibly brave…” “Or she has absolutely no idea who she’s talking to.” Ava squeezed her eyes shut. “We’re dead.” But to everyone’s surprise… The corner of Xavier’s mouth lifted. Not quite a smile. Just the faintest hint of amusement. “So you answer every question with another question?” Nora lifted an eyebrow. “Only when the first question is unnecessary.” The silence that followed was deafening. No one… Absolutely no one… Spoke to Xavier Ashford that way. Not students. Not prefects. Not even most teachers. Yet here stood a first year scholarship student arguing with him as though he were just another classmate. Xavier studied her quietly. Most people looked away when he met their eyes. She didn’t. There was no fear in her gaze. No admiration. No desperation to impress him. She simply looked at him as an equal. How… Interesting. A bell rang across the academy. The orientation ceremony. Damien cleared his throat softly. “We’re going to be late.” Xavier finally broke eye contact. He gave Nora one last look before stepping around her. As he walked away, the crowd automatically parted again. No one spoke until he disappeared into Founder Hall. Then— The courtyard exploded. “Oh my gosh!” “Did you see that?” “She talked back to him!” “I thought he was going to report her.” “Who is she?” “That’s the scholarship girl.” “The one who topped the entrance exams.” Ava hurried toward Nora so quickly she nearly tripped over her own feet. “Nora!” “What?” “What do you mean ‘what’?” “You argued with Xavier Ashford!” “I didn’t argue.” “You absolutely argued!” Nora looked genuinely confused. “He asked me a question.” “I answered.” “That’s called having a conversation.” Ava stared at her for several seconds before laughing in disbelief. “I have a feeling this school isn’t ready for you.” Nora smiled faintly. “I don’t see what the big deal is.” “The big deal?” Ava grabbed her arm and began pulling her toward Founder Hall. “The last student who openly challenged Xavier transferred before the semester ended.” “What?” “I’m serious.” “They couldn’t handle the pressure.” Nora frowned. “I wasn’t challenging him.” “I was just…” She paused. Was she? Thinking back on it… She hadn’t meant to be disrespectful. She simply refused to let anyone intimidate her. Whether they were rich… Powerful… Or named Xavier Ashford. Inside Founder Hall, hundreds of students filled the grand auditorium. Rows of polished wooden seats stretched toward an enormous stage where the academy crest hung proudly against a velvet backdrop. Nora and Ava slipped into two empty seats near the middle. As the lights dimmed, the Headmaster stepped onto the stage. “Welcome…” His voice echoed through the hall. “…to Ashford Elite Academy.” Nora listened politely. Yet her thoughts wandered. Without meaning to… Her eyes searched the front row. Xavier sat with the Student Council, his posture calm and composed. Almost as if nothing unusual had happened outside. At that exact moment… He turned. Their eyes met across the crowded hall. For one brief second… Neither of them looked away. Then, just as quietly, Xavier faced the stage again. Hidden beneath his blazer, something silver hanging around his neck grew warm against his skin. Miles away, deep within the forbidden forest bordering the academy… A massive black wolf slowly lifted its head toward the evening sky. Its glowing golden eyes narrowed. As if… It had sensed something.
