A Ticket to Another World
Nora’s POV The shrill ringing of an old alarm clock shattered the quiet of the small Bennett home long before the sun rose. Nora Bennett reached across her narrow bed, silenced the alarm, and stared at the cracked ceiling above her. Today. It was finally today. For months, she had imagined this morning, wondering whether it would ever come. Now that it had, her heart pounded with excitement and fear in equal measure. She sat up slowly, taking a deep breath before her feet touched the cool tiled floor. The tiny room had always been enough for her. A single bed rested against one wall, a wooden wardrobe stood beside the window, and a small desk filled with neatly stacked books occupied the corner. Everything was simple, but every object reminded her of countless late nights spent studying while her family slept. Her eyes landed on the white envelope resting carefully on her desk. ASHFORD ELITE ACADEMY The elegant gold lettering seemed almost unreal. She picked it up gently, tracing the academy crest with her fingertips. A full scholarship. One of only twenty awarded across the country. Thousands had applied. Only a handful had been accepted. Sometimes she still wondered if there had been a mistake. A knock interrupted her thoughts. “Nora?” her mother’s warm voice came through the door. “Are you awake?” She smiled. “I’ve been awake for a while.” “Good. Breakfast is ready.” “I’ll be there in a minute.” The sound of footsteps faded down the hallway. Nora stood before the mirror hanging above her desk. Her long dark hair fell naturally over her shoulders. She quickly tied it into a neat ponytail before washing her face. She did not see herself as beautiful. She never had. She only saw the determined girl who refused to let circumstances decide her future. She picked up a small framed photograph from her desk. It showed her between her parents during her high school graduation ceremony. All three of them were laughing. She smiled softly. “I did it,” she whispered. “I really got in.” … The smell of toasted bread and fried eggs greeted her as she entered the kitchen. Their home was modest. Small enough that voices carried from one room to another. The furniture had been repaired more times than replaced. The paint on the walls had begun to fade. But it was home. And to Nora, it was perfect. Her father looked up from the newspaper with a grin. “There’s our genius.” “Dad.” “You earned that title.” Her mother placed a plate before her. “Eat while it’s hot.” Nora folded her hands. “Thank you for the food.” The family shared a quiet prayer before breakfast began. For several minutes, only the sound of cutlery filled the room. Then her father cleared his throat. “I still can’t believe my daughter got into Ashford Elite Academy.” Her mother laughed. “You’ve said that every day this week.” “I’ll probably keep saying it.” He folded the newspaper and looked at Nora. “You know how proud we are, don’t you?” She nodded. “I know.” “No.” He leaned forward. “I don’t think you do.” His eyes shone with emotion. “That academy is where the children of presidents, billionaires, and business tycoons study.” “You earned your place among them.” “No one gave you anything.” Her chest tightened. “Thank you, Dad.” Her mother reached across the table and squeezed Nora’s hand. “It won’t always be easy.” “I know.” “There may be students who look down on you because you aren’t as wealthy.” “I know.” “They may try to make you feel like you don’t belong.” Nora’s expression became firm. “I do belong.” The certainty in her voice filled the room. “I studied for this.” “I worked for it.” “I’m not taking anyone’s place.” “I earned mine.” Her father smiled proudly. “That’s my girl.” … Two hours later, a taxi pulled to a stop outside the Bennett house. Three suitcases stood neatly beside the gate. Neighbors gathered quietly along the street. Everyone wanted to wish Nora well before she left. Mrs. Daniels from next door hugged her tightly. “You’ll make us proud.” “I’ll do my best.” Mr. Okafor adjusted his glasses. “When you become a famous doctor, don’t forget the street you grew up on.” Nora laughed. “I could never.” Children waved excitedly as she climbed into the taxi. Her mother wiped away tears despite trying to hide them. Her father rested a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “You’ll call every evening.” “I promise.” “No matter how busy you are.” “I promise.” “And if anyone gives you trouble…” Nora laughed again. “I’ll handle it.” “I know you will.” He pulled her into a hug. One she would remember for a very long time. … The journey lasted almost four hours. As the city slowly disappeared behind them, the roads became quieter. Mountains stretched across the horizon. Forests lined the highway. Nora spent most of the ride staring through the window. She imagined what Ashford Elite Academy would be like. Students wearing expensive watches. Luxury cars. Perfect uniforms. People who had never worried about paying school fees. Would they even notice someone like her? Her phone buzzed. Her mother. Mom: Have you eaten? Nora smiled. Nora: Yes. A second message arrived almost immediately. Mom: Don’t skip meals because of studying. She laughed softly. Nora: I won’t. Her father sent one after that. Dad: Remember who you are. She looked at the message for several seconds before replying. Nora: Always. She slipped the phone back into her bag. The taxi rounded another bend. Then she saw it. Ashford Elite Academy. Her breath caught. The academy stood like a palace atop a gentle hill. Tall stone buildings gleamed beneath the afternoon sun. Massive glass windows reflected the blue sky. Elegant fountains decorated the entrance. Perfectly trimmed gardens stretched in every direction. Students walked across the grounds in immaculate uniforms. Everything looked expensive. Everything looked untouchable. The taxi slowed before a pair of towering black iron gates. Engraved across the arch above them were the words: ASHFORD ELITE ACADEMY “Excellence Beyond Blood.” Nora frowned. “Beyond blood?” What an unusual motto. The gates opened slowly. For reasons she could not explain, a strange chill ran down her spine. It disappeared as quickly as it came. She shook it off. Probably nerves. The taxi drove through the gates. Hidden among the trees overlooking the entrance… Someone watched the vehicle arrive. A pair of golden eyes followed it without blinking.
