A Name That Echoed

Nora’s POV The applause that filled Founder Hall faded into the background. The Headmaster continued speaking from the stage, welcoming the new students, explaining the academy’s history, its traditions, and the expectations placed upon every student who walked through its gates. Nora listened. She truly did. But every now and then, her mind drifted. Not because the speech was boring. Because she couldn’t shake the strange feeling from the courtyard. Xavier Ashford. She had expected someone arrogant. Someone who would make a scene over a few books falling in his path. Instead… He had picked one up for her. It wasn’t much. It was a simple gesture. Yet judging by the horrified expressions on everyone else’s faces, it clearly wasn’t something he normally did. “Maybe they exaggerated,” she thought. “Or maybe…” She stopped herself. She had known him for less than a minute. There was no point making assumptions. “…and finally,” the Headmaster announced, his voice carrying through the enormous hall, “Ashford Elite Academy is more than a place of learning. It is a community.” “A family.” “We expect every student to uphold the values that have defined this institution for over a century.” The audience applauded politely. Nora joined in. The ceremony came to an end, and almost immediately, the hall buzzed with conversation. Students stood, collecting their bags and chatting excitedly as they made their way toward the exits. “Come on,” Ava said, gently nudging Nora’s shoulder. “If we don’t leave now, the cafeteria queue will be impossible.” “I’m coming.” The girls followed the crowd into the corridor. The hallway was alive with voices. Some students discussed tomorrow’s classes. Others exchanged social media handles. A group of seniors laughed loudly as they walked past. Everything felt… normal. Until a voice cut through the noise. “Look.” “That’s her.” Nora glanced around. Two girls standing near the staircase looked directly at her. “The scholarship girl.” “The one who spoke to Xavier.” Heat rose to Nora’s cheeks. “They’re talking about you,” Ava whispered. “I noticed.” “I told you news travels fast.” Nora sighed. “I wasn’t trying to become famous on my first day.” “Too late.” Ava laughed. “You’ve already done it.” As they continued walking, more whispers followed. “That’s her.” “She looked him in the eye.” “I heard she didn’t even apologize properly.” “I heard he smiled.” “No way.” “Xavier Ashford doesn’t smile.” The stories were already changing. Growing larger with every retelling. Nora couldn’t help shaking her head. “People really enjoy exaggerating.” “You’ll get used to it.” “I hope not.” … The cafeteria occupied an entire wing of the academy. Floor to ceiling windows overlooked beautifully landscaped gardens, while elegant chandeliers hung from the high ceiling. It looked more like a luxury hotel restaurant than a school dining hall. Students filled hundreds of tables. Yet even here… The invisible line existed. Gold Division students occupied the elevated section overlooking the gardens. Silver Division students sat on the lower floor. No signs. No written rules. Just silent understanding. Nora frowned. “I still don’t like this.” Ava followed her gaze. “Neither do I.” “But fighting it on your first day probably isn’t the best idea.” “I wasn’t planning to fight.” “Good.” “You have four more years to decide.” Nora laughed. “You make me sound dangerous.” Ava picked up a tray. “I have a feeling you are.” They joined the serving line. The food smelled incredible. Fresh bread. Roasted chicken. Rice. Steaming vegetables. Desserts displayed behind glass counters. “This is school food?” Nora asked in disbelief. “I know.” “I nearly cried my first day.” A chef smiled as he served them. “Welcome to Ashford.” “Thank you,” Nora replied politely. They found seats near one of the windows. Just as Nora lifted her fork— The cafeteria doors opened. Conversations softened instantly. Not completely. Just enough to notice. Nora looked up. Xavier entered with several members of the Student Council. Damien walked beside him, talking about something that made two council members laugh. Xavier didn’t. He simply listened. Every student seemed aware of his presence. Yet he behaved as though none of them existed. He collected his lunch like everyone else. Thanked the server. Carried his own tray. No special treatment. No bodyguards. No dramatic entrance. Still… People instinctively moved aside. “Do they always react like that?” Nora asked quietly. Ava nodded. “Every single day.” “But why?” “It’s Xavier.” “That doesn’t answer my question.” Ava rested her elbows on the table. “The Ashford family practically built this academy.” “They fund scholarships.” “They own companies all over the world.” “They’re one of the oldest were…” She stopped herself abruptly. Nora tilted her head. “They’re one of the oldest what?” Ava blinked. “I meant… one of the oldest wealthy families.” Something about the pause felt strange. Before Nora could ask another question, Damien suddenly looked toward their table. His eyes met Nora’s. He leaned slightly toward Xavier and murmured something. Xavier glanced over. Their eyes met once again across the crowded cafeteria. This time… He looked away first. Nora frowned. “Why does he keep looking at me?” Ava nearly dropped her fork. “He looked at you?” “For like… two seconds.” “That’s impossible.” “Why?” “Because Xavier Ashford doesn’t notice people.” … Xavier’s POV “You’ve looked at her three times today.” Damien’s voice was calm. Observant. Xavier continued eating. “So?” “So… you don’t look at people.” “I just did.” Damien smiled knowingly. “You know what I mean.” Xavier set down his fork. Across the cafeteria, Nora laughed at something Ava had said. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t forced. It was genuine. Different. “She’s unusual,” Xavier admitted. Damien almost choked on his drink. “You admitted it.” “I made an observation.” “No.” “You admitted someone caught your attention.” Xavier ignored him. Yet his thoughts refused to cooperate. There had been something strange the moment their fingers brushed. It lasted less than a second. But he had felt it. Warm. Almost electric. He had never experienced anything like it. He slid a hand unconsciously beneath his blazer. The silver pendant resting against his chest had finally cooled. Strange. Very strange. “Xavier.” Damien’s voice became serious. “Is something wrong?” For the first time in years… Xavier answered honestly. “I don’t know.” ⸻ That evening, after dinner, students slowly returned to their dormitories. The campus settled into a peaceful silence as the sun dipped below the horizon. Nora stood on the balcony outside her room, watching the last rays of light disappear behind the distant mountains. The academy looked beautiful at sunset. Lights flickered on one by one across the campus. Somewhere in the distance, the great clock tower struck eight. A cool wind brushed against her face. She closed her eyes. Tomorrow would be her first real day of classes. A new beginning. She had no idea that, at that very same moment, deep within the restricted forest beyond the academy walls… A pair of glowing golden eyes slowly opened. A low growl rumbled through the darkness. The ancient wolf lifted its nose into the air. It had caught a scent. A scent it had not smelled… In nearly eighteen years.
