More than five hundred years after a devastating plague wiped out most of humanity and left all subsequent generations blind, being able to see has become an ultimate curse. Some say it's a mark of witchcraft that once destroyed the old world, to others, it's forbidden to make mention of it.  In the vast kingdoms of Ashara, anyone discovered with working eyes is hunted and executed without mercy. When Kaelen Dravik’s wife Lyra gives birth to sighted twins Rian and Nyra, their family is exposed to danger. Unknown to Kaelen, the twins are the biological children of Kelvin, a mysterious, sighted wanderer who has secretly fathered gifted children across the tribes and hidden them in a remote place to restore humanity’s lost birthright. As imperial witch hunters close in, led by the ruthless Empress Selene Varek (Lyra’s estranged elder sister), Kaelen must protect the family he loves from both the empire’s forces and Kelvin himself, who returns to claim the twins for his grand mission. Torn between a dangerous visionary and a protective father, one family’s light could either heal humanity’s blindness or ignite its final destruction.

Chapter 1: Whisper in darkness
Kaelen Dravik moved like a shadow through the jagged peaks of Ashvale, his bare feet reading every tremble in the stone. The mountain breathed beneath him, cold and alive, sending back sharp echoes from his clicking tongue. He gripped his vibration spear tighter, its shaft humming in his palm as it sent low pulses into the dark. A massive rock-bear lurked ahead. He could feel its heavy steps vibrating through the ground, smell its musky rage on the wind. His hunters waited behind him, silent, trusting his lead. Kaelen clicked again, sharper this time, painting the beast’s outline in his mind: broad shoulders, powerful limbs, head lowered for a charge. "Now!" he growled. He thrust the spear forward. The tip sang through the air and struck true, releasing a deep, shattering vibration that stunned the bear mid-roar. The creature bellowed, a sound so raw it rattled Kaelen’s teeth, but he was already moving. He leaped onto its back, muscles straining, and drove a second blade into the thick hide. Warm blood sprayed across his chest. The bear thrashed, slamming him against the rocks, but Kaelen held on with fierce determination. For Lyra. For our child. We eat tonight. His hunters joined the fray, their spears adding to the deadly chorus. The fight ended in a final, trembling roar that faded into silence. Kaelen stood over the kill, chest heaving, blood and sweat mixing on his skin. Victory tasted sharp and sweet on his tongue. "Strong hunt," one of the men called, voice low with respect. "The village will sing your name." Kaelen wiped his blade clean on the bear’s fur. "They sing for all of us. Load it. We go home." The journey back down the mountain paths felt lighter. Echoes guided their steps around familiar bends and loose stones. Kaelen’s mind drifted to Lyra, as it always did. Her soft laugh, the way her fingers traced his scars with gentle possession, the swell of her belly that carried their future. She was his anchor in this endless night. But lately, something had shifted in her. He could hear it in her quicker breaths, feel it in the tension of her shoulders when he held her. She hid it well, but not from him. Ashvale welcomed them with the warm smells of cooking fires and the rhythmic sounds of daily life. Children laughed and clicked as they chased each other through the paths. Women called out greetings, their voices bright against the mountain wind. Kaelen’s group dragged the heavy bear carcass into the center clearing, and cheers rose up around them. He left the butchering to the others and made straight for his dwelling, a sturdy stone home carved into the mountainside. His heart beat faster as he approached. He clicked softly at the entrance, announcing himself. "Lyra?" Her voice came back, warm but edged with something he couldn’t quite name. "Kaelen. You’re back." He stepped inside, the familiar scent of her — herbs, woodsmoke, and that sweet underlying warmth that was purely Lyra — wrapping around him like a caress. She rose to meet him, her movements careful because of the child she carried. He reached for her immediately, pulling her close. His large hands spanned her back, then slid down to rest on the firm curve of her belly. "You feel bigger every time I return," he murmured against her hair, voice rough with emotion. "Our son grows strong." "Or daughter," she replied, pressing her cheek to his chest. Her fingers traced the fresh blood on his tunic. "You’re hurt." "Scratches. The bear fought hard, but we won." He lifted her chin with two fingers, imagining the way her unseeing eyes would lock with his if the old stories of sight were true. Even without it, the connection between them burned. "I missed you." Lyra leaned into him, her body molding perfectly against his. For a moment, the tension in her eased. Her hands roamed over his shoulders, possessive and hungry, nails lightly scraping his skin. Heat flared between them, slow and deep. Kaelen’s breath hitched as she pressed closer, her swollen belly between them a reminder of their shared passion from months ago. That night still lived in his blood — the way she had gasped his name, the desperate way their bodies had moved together in the dark. "I missed you more," she whispered. Her voice carried a husky edge that stirred him. "Every hour you’re gone feels too long." He kissed her then, deep and claiming, tasting the salt on her lips. His hand slid lower, cupping her hip and pulling her tighter against him. Desire coiled low in his gut, hot and insistent, but he held back. She was carrying their child. He would not risk her. Still, the kiss lingered, full of promise and barely restrained need. They broke apart only when the village bell rang for the evening meal. Lyra helped him clean the blood from his skin with warm cloths, her touches lingering, tracing every muscle as if memorizing him. The simple act felt intimate, charged. Kaelen’s internal thoughts raced with love and worry. She is everything. I would tear down the mountain to keep her safe. Dinner passed in the communal hall with stories of the hunt and shared laughter. Kaelen kept Lyra close, his arm around her shoulders. But he noticed how she ate little, how her laughter came a fraction too late. Something weighed on her. Later, in the quiet of their home, they lay together on the thick furs. The mountain wind whispered outside, and the fire crackled low. Kaelen rested his head near her belly, listening to the strong heartbeat within. His hand stroked slow circles over the taut skin. "Talk to me, Lyra," he said softly. "I hear your fear." She was silent for a long moment. Then her fingers tightened in his hair. The baby kicked suddenly, hard enough to make them both still. Lyra gasped, a sharp sound of surprise and something deeper. "Kaelen..." Her voice trembled. She leaned closer, lips brushing his ear. "It moved again. Different this time. Like... like it wants something more." He chuckled gently, trying to soothe her. "Babies kick. It is normal. You worry too much because you love fiercely." But Lyra shook her head. Her breathing quickened. In the darkness, her whisper fell like a forbidden stone into still water. "Sight." The word hung between them, heavy and dangerous. Kaelen’s blood ran cold. He sat up, pulling her protectively against his chest. "What did you say?" "Sight," she repeated, softer, but no less defiant. "I felt it in the movement. Like the old tales. Like the child sees something we cannot. The curse... what if it breaks in our blood?" Kaelen’s jaw tightened. He cupped her face in both hands, thumbs stroking her cheeks. "Those are dangerous words, my love. Pregnancy brings strange dreams and fears. The Empire forbids such talk for a reason. We live by sound and touch. That is our way. That is enough." He kissed her forehead, then her lips, pouring reassurance and fierce love into the contact. Inside, his thoughts churned with protective anger. No one will threaten my family. Not even ghosts of the past. Lyra melted into him, returning the kiss with desperate intensity. Their bodies pressed close, heat building again despite the heavy words. His hands roamed her curves with possessive hunger, stopping just short of more. The tension between them crackled like lightning before a storm. They held each other long into the night, the baby quiet now. Kaelen drifted toward sleep with Lyra’s head on his chest, her breathing finally steady. Then it came. A distant, mechanical thrum carried on the wind. Imperial sound-messengers. Their low, resonant tones echoed off the mountains, growing clearer with every passing second. Kaelen’s eyes snapped open. He felt Lyra stiffen beside him. The message rolled through Ashvale like thunder: "Citizens of the peaks... a witch has been sighted in Black Hollow. A woman who claims the gift of sight. The Empire demands her capture. Any who harbor such blasphemy will face the same fate..." The words faded, but their weight remained. Kaelen pulled Lyra tighter, heart pounding with a mix of dread and resolve. The curse was stirring. And it had just knocked on their door.
