Chapter 9

" I'm home!" " Come in the kitchen Kathy." " What's up?" " So, you have a boyfriend?" I knew this was going to happen. Both my parents are sitting at the kitchen table. " Yes." " And since how long?" " I don't know, like a week." " And why didn't this come up sooner?" " I don't know, maybe because we never talk about these things." " Yeah, but we still are your parents, we have a right to know. Imagine we wouldn't have seen him, how long would it have taken for us to know?" " I don't know, but it would've come up some day or another. It's not as if I'm going to do anything bad, like smoke or something. I have a bunch of new friends now, on top of Sarah, and Matt." " We know honey, but we still have a right to know. Because it's your first boyfriend. We're glad you have more friends, but some things you can tell us. We are your parents." " Technically you're not my actual parents. And I'm sorry if I'm not comfortable talking about these things with you, you never ask me anything eather!" I regret that once it comes out, but it's too late now. " I'm sorry I said that, I swear I didn't mean it." I'm crying now, and so is my mom, I seriously hurt them. " Please go up to your room." It's my dad that tells me. And I listen without a question. I get up, and hear them talk, and it continues for like an hour until my mom comes up to my room. " Mom, I'm really sorry I said that, I didn't mean it!" " I know honey. Sometimes we say things we don't mean out of anger. And we're sorry we started pounding you with questions and stuff. But we worry about you, so even if we don't talk about these things you should tell us. And you can, especially with me, I'm a girl so you can talk to me about these things, and if you don't want me to tell your dad, I won't. I can keep a secret." I start crying again and nod to show her I understood. She leans in and hugs me, and I continue to apologise, still feeling horrible. After a while she says " Why don't you invite Matt for dinner tomorrow, I'm sure we'll get along fine." I know that isn't a question but something I have to do. So tomorrow I'll have to invite him for dinner. Sarah has been texting me all night since I got home, just like she said she would. Asking me all sorts of questions, and I answer to all of them even if they aren't true. She's back in school of course but she doesn't want to stay with me for lunch, so I can spend time with Matt and make new friends.
