chapter 1 - Rejected Before The Throne
The moon above the kingdom of Virelia glowed blood red. An omen. Everyone in the palace knew it. But no one dared speak of it tonight. Not on the night of the Lycan King’s wedding. My wedding. I stood outside the royal hall with trembling fingers clutching the fabric of my white gown. The diamonds stitched into the corset glittered beneath the candlelight, but none of it calmed the storm inside me. “You should smile,” my maid whispered nervously. “You’re becoming queen.” Queen. The word felt too heavy for me. Because Kael Draven—the ruthless Lycan King—had never looked at me with love. Only obligation. Still… he was my fated mate. And mates were forever. That’s what I kept telling myself as the giant palace doors slowly opened. The moment I stepped inside, silence swallowed the hall. Nobles lined both sides of the crimson aisle, watching me carefully. Judging me. Some looked curious. Others looked almost pitying. My heartbeat quickened. Something was wrong. Then I saw him. Kael stood before the throne dressed in black royal armor instead of wedding robes, his dark hair slightly messy, his expression cold enough to freeze the entire kingdom. Beautiful. Cruel. Untouchable. My mate. The bond between us instantly tightened painfully in my chest. But Kael didn’t smile when he saw me. If anything… He looked angry. My steps slowed. Why did he look at me like that? The High Priest began the ceremony anyway. “Tonight, under the blessing of the moon goddess, we unite the Lycan King and his destined mate—” A soft laugh interrupted him. Female. Mocking. I turned sharply. A woman stood beside the throne wearing a tight crimson dress, her lips curved with satisfaction. Selene Ravaryn. The king’s former lover. My stomach dropped. Why was she here? Kael’s jaw tightened when our eyes met. And suddenly fear crept beneath my skin. The High Priest cleared his throat awkwardly. “Your Majesty… shall we continue?” Kael remained silent. The entire hall waited. Then slowly—too slowly—he descended the throne steps until he stood directly in front of me. Close enough for me to smell the dark cedar scent of his skin. Close enough to remember every dream I had ever built around him. I swallowed hard. “Kael…” His golden eyes locked onto mine. Cold. Emotionless. And then he destroyed me. “I reject you.” The words echoed through the hall like thunder. For a second, I couldn’t breathe. Gasps exploded around us. Someone dropped a wine glass. My knees nearly gave out. “No…” I whispered weakly. The mate bond snapped violently inside my chest, sending unbearable pain through my body. I cried out as tears blurred my vision. Kael never moved to help me. He simply watched. Like my suffering meant nothing. “Y-You’re my mate…” My voice broke completely. “And you,” he said coldly, “were never fit to stand beside a king.” The humiliation burned hotter than the pain. The entire kingdom was watching me fall apart. Selene smiled from behind him. That was when I understood. This had been planned. My rejection. My destruction. Everything. I stared at Kael in disbelief. “Why are you doing this to me?” For the first time, something dangerous flickered in his eyes. Regret. But it vanished instantly. “Because I have no choice.” Before I could understand what he meant, guards suddenly grabbed my arms. My panic exploded. “What are you doing?!” “The rejected bride is to be exiled immediately,” one guard announced. Exiled? My blood turned cold. Rejected mates rarely survived outside the kingdom walls. Kael knew that. Which meant— This wasn’t rejection. It was a death sentence. I fought against the guards desperately. “Kael please—!” He looked away. That hurt more than the rejection itself. The massive palace doors opened behind me as rain and thunder crashed outside. The guards dragged me toward the darkness. Barefoot. Broken. Still wearing my wedding dress. And just before the doors closed completely, Kael finally spoke one last time. “Run far from this kingdom, Ariana.” His voice sounded almost tortured. “Because if they find you first…” His expression darkened with something terrifying. “…even I won’t be able to save you.”
