Chapter 1: Twins From A Forgotten Night
She stared at the scan in her trembling hands, unable to believe what she was seeing. Twins, she was going to have twins. A strange mixture of emotions overwhelmed her. She was happy because, despite everything, she was finally going to have babies of her own. For the first time in her life, she had something she could call her two little lives growing inside her.
But beneath that happiness was a deep, frightening uncertainty. She didn't know who their father was.
Pamela lowered the scan and closed her eyes. Memories of that night came rushing back, each one more painful than the last, it had started after she lost her job. Devastated and frustrated, she had gone to a bar hoping alcohol would help her forget her problems for a few hours. She had drunk far more than she should have. Somewhere between the music, the drinks and her broken emotions, she had lost control of herself. That was where she met the stranger. She barely remembered his face but she remembered his fragrance.
The next morning, she had woken up in a hotel room with a pounding headache and a terrible sense of confusion. She had panicked when she realized she wasn't in her own apartment. She didn't even take the time to properly look at the man beside her. She grabbed her belongings and hurried out of the hotel. She never looked back.
Now, months later, that single night had returned to haunt her. She forced herself out of the hospital and entered a taxi. Throughout the journey to the apartment she shared with her friend Rose, she barely spoke. Her fingers remained tightly wrapped around the scan.
When she finally arrived, she walked into the apartment, dropped her bag on the floor and threw herself onto the bed.
She stared at the ceiling. How was she supposed to raise two children when she could barely take care of herself? She was an orphan who had spent most of her life surviving without anyone to depend on. Losing her job had already left her struggling. Rose had been carrying most of the financial responsibility in the apartment since then.
And now she was pregnant with twins, she covered her face with both hands. "What am I going to do?"
Just then, the sound of Rose opening the door caught her attention. Rose stepped into the room and looked at her worriedly. "How did it go?" she asked.
Pamela didn't answer immediately. Instead, she silently handed her the scan.
Rose looked at it, then at Pamela. "What is this?" She goes through the scan. "Twins?" Rose exclaimed in disbelief. She stared at the scan again before looking at Pamela. "Pamela, how are you going to take care of two babies? You don't even have a job yet. Since you lost your job, I've been the one carrying most of the responsibility in this house. Now you're telling me you're having twins?"
Pamela lowered her eyes.
Rose sighed and sat beside her. "Listen to me. I think you should go back to that hotel."
Pamela looked up sharply. "What?"
"You need to find out more about that night. Maybe the hotel has a record of the man who stayed there. If you can identify him, you might be able to find the father of your babies," Rose continued.
Pamela shook her head immediately. "I don't think I can do that."
"Why not?" Rose asked.
"It was just one night," Pamela replied quietly. "I don't even remember his face. I was drunk. I didn't know what I was doing. And the next morning, I didn't bother looking at him before I left. What if he doesn't want the babies?" Pamela swallowed hard.
Rose reached for her hand. "Pamela, you can't do this completely alone."
"I know," Pamela whispered. "But I don't think I have another choice. I can't go looking for a stranger just because I got pregnant after one night with him. What if finding him makes everything worse?"
Rose had no immediate answer.
Pamela looked down at the scan again. "These are my babies. I'll take care of them myself. I'll keep looking for a job. Somehow, I'll make it work." She forced a small smile.
But deep inside, Pamela knew the truth. It wouldn't be easy.
Raising one child was already a huge responsibility. Raising twins without a stable income, without parents and without knowing who their father was seemed almost impossible.
She wished she could turn back time, she wished she had never gone to that bar, she wished she hadn't drunk herself into oblivion. Most of all, she wished she had looked at the stranger's face that morning before walking away because now, two innocent babies are depending on her. Pamela held the scan tightly against her chest.
