Chapter 8

579 Words
As I dove through the window I couldn’t help but feel the rush of excitement. Cinder picked out a horse. What a strange looking horse. I land perfectly on the horse's back and we bolt towards the open gate and out to freedom. I decide to head towards the Fates' home in the mountains to ask them about this mysterious prophecy and how I am the sea. I know that Captain Dyce and his guards will follow me, because for some reason they believe I am a threat to the Queen. Boy can this horse run. She seems to still be wild and not broken at all. Cinder confirms to me that she is safe. How to get this wild thing to trust me enough to let me hear her too…I’ll have to work on that with Cinders help, of course…I need to start with a name first…I don’t have time for that at the moment… We need to escape safely first. It will take us five days to reach the Fates. That means five days to outsmart the enemy and not get caught. Easy! I thought to myself with a sly smile. We’ve been running for several hours now and it is almost night. We stop by a brook to catch our breaths and so I can change out of my dress and back into my yellow shirt, black tattered shorts and soft boots. I love my boots. They are made of soft black leather and are light on my feet. They come up to my knees to protect my legs from serious injury, yet they are light enough to not slow me down when I need to be nimble. I took a moment to check on my stitches on my chest. They are still in good shape and haven’t busted yet. I will have to remove them before another day sets or else I risk my skin growing around the stitching fibers. Cinder and the horse are splashing around in the brook. I think he has made a good friend. What shall I call this new addition to my family? Maybe Magic…Yes I like that… Magic. I stood up and slowly made my way to Magic. Let’s see what she’s got. I say her name and her ears perk up. I am your friend Magic; if you trust me, I can read your thoughts and thus be able to communicate with you more easily. She nickers and paws the ground only to then bow her head to me. I began to hear a new voice in my head. Magic! I am grateful to you for rescuing me from being locked in a paddock and being broken down into a beast of burden, Magic tells me. I softly whistled, Cinder came forward and slowly so did Magic. Cinder will be her teacher on what all of my whistles mean. I love to train animals almost as much as I love being a Pirate. Cinders ears perk up and I hear distant hoof beats. Dyce and his men are on the move. We can’t stay here and we won’t be able to stop for the night. In the dark of night is when the real fun will begin. I am master of shadows and will have to have some fun with those men who are hunting me down. I will beat them at this most deadly game of cat and mouse. Little do they know I am no mouse.
