CHAPTER ONE : The Alpha Watched Me Bleed
The forest went silent the moment my blood hit the ground. I didn’t notice the cut at first. It was small, barely more than a scratch on my palm from tripping over a fallen branch. But when the sting reached my nerves and warm liquid slid down my skin, something in the air changed. The night stopped breathing. No insects. No wind. No sound except my own uneven breaths. I stood frozen at the edge of Ravenwood Forest, my flashlight trembling in my hand. I’d only meant to take a short walk, just to clear my head after another sleepless night in a town that felt like it was watching me. “Get it together, Aria,” I whispered. That was when I heard it. A low, vibrating growl. It rolled through the trees like thunder beneath the earth, sending a sharp chill down my spine. Every instinct I had, every warning my body could give, screamed at me to run. I turned slowly. The shadows shifted. Then I saw the eyes. Silver. Glowing. Locked on me with terrifying focus. My heart slammed so hard I thought it might break my ribs. A massive wolf stepped into the moonlight, its fur as dark as midnight, muscles rippling beneath its coat. It was nothing like the animals I’d seen in documentaries. This creature was bigger. Smarter. Deadlier. And it was staring at me like it knew me. I took a step back. The wolf stepped forward. My pulse roared in my ears. I raised the flashlight, the beam shaking as it washed over the creature’s face. Its ears flicked, nostrils flaring as its gaze dropped—to my bleeding hand. The growl deepened. “Oh God,” I breathed. The wolf lowered its head, circling me slowly. Each step was deliberate and controlled. Not wild. Not frantic. Calculated. Tears burned my eyes as fear wrapped around my chest, squeezing until I could barely breathe. I tried to run. I didn’t make it far. In a blur of movement, the wolf lunged, landing in front of me with a force that shook the ground. I screamed, stumbling backward, my legs giving out beneath me. I hit the forest floor hard. The wolf loomed over me, breath hot against my skin. I could see the intelligence in its eyes now. The restraint. The battle raging behind that silver gaze. It sniffed my hand. The world exploded. Pain tore through my skull, white-hot and blinding. I cried out, clutching my head as something foreign crashed into my mind, deep, powerful, and unmistakably male. Mine. The word echoed through my thoughts, heavy with possession and hunger. “No!” I sobbed, shaking my head. “Get out, get out of my head!” The wolf recoiled like it had been burned. Then it began to change. Bones cracked. Muscles shifted. Fur receded. I screamed again, scrambling backward as the creature twisted and reshaped itself beneath the moon. Seconds later, a man stood where the wolf had been. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Naked beneath the silver light. His dark hair fell across sharp features, his jaw clenched tight as if he were fighting something inside himself. His eyes, those same silver eyes, locked onto mine. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. He took a step toward me, then stopped, fists curling at his sides. “Don’t run,” he said, his voice deep and strained. Too late. Terror surged through me, and I scrambled to my feet, turning blindly toward the trees. Before I could take a single step, he moved, appearing in front of me so fast I gasped. “I said don’t run,” he growled. I froze. Up close, he was even more terrifying. Power radiated from him, heavy and overwhelming, pressing down on my senses. Yet beneath it, I felt something else. Conflict. Pain. “You’re bleeding,” he said, eyes flicking to my hand. “I, I didn’t mean to,” I stammered. “Please, I won’t tell anyone. I swear.” His jaw tightened. “You already broke the law by being here,” he said. “What law?” I whispered. His gaze softened for half a second, just long enough for me to notice. “The one that says humans should never be near us,” he replied. My knees threatened to buckle. “Us?” A distant howl split the night. His head snapped toward the sound, panic flashing across his face. “They smelled you,” he muttered. My heart dropped. “Who?” I asked. He looked back at me, silver eyes burning with something dangerously close to regret. “My pack.” Then his hand closed around my wrist. And the moon above us burned brighter.
