When Emery Thorne’s father falls ill, she returns to her hometown, unaware that her fate is already sealed by a contract she can’t refuse—and a man she can’t stand. Lachlan Draven isn’t just any billionaire alpha; he’s her father’s worst enemy and the boy whose family her father destroyed. Now, Lachlan is back to claim what he’s owed, starting with her.“I could make you hate me more than you already do,” he murmured, eyes cold and unyielding. “Or,” he pauses, a cruel smile tugging at his lips, “you could give in.”Bound by a contract that demands her loyalty but offers none in return, Emery’s torn between desire and resentment. But the deeper she falls, the more she uncovers about Lachlan’s broken past—and the dark secrets that entwine their families.“Whatever you think of me, Lachlan,” she whispers, her heart breaking for them both, “you’re wrong. I’m not your enemy.”As revenge clashes with fate and love wars against hatred, Emery and Lachlan will be forced to make a choice: shatter the chains of the past… or become its prisoners forever.

Return to the Thorne manor
Emery The wind carried the scent of home. It was a blend of pine, earth, and something wild, something untamed that lay beneath the surface of Thorne Ridge. I took a deep breath, letting it fill my lungs as I stepped out of the car, feeling my wolf stir within me. She recognized the scent—felt the pulse of the land, the ancient power tied to my family, to me. It had been years since I’d left, and still, the Ridge knew me. In front of me, the towering iron gates of Thorne Manor loomed like watchful guardians, almost daring me to enter. The last time I’d been here, I was just a girl, a young wolf whose life had fallen apart without warning. A lot had changed since then. I’d changed. “Emery!” My mother’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I looked up to see her standing at the top of the stone steps. She looked smaller than I remembered. There was a weariness in her face, a tension that hadn’t been there before. I could see it in the lines around her eyes, in the way she hugged herself against the chill. She hadn’t called me in years, and now, suddenly, she’d written me a letter asking me to come home. Told me my father needed me. “Mom,” I greeted softly, forcing a smile as I walked up to her. She pulled me into a tight hug, her arms surprisingly strong for someone who looked so frail. “I wasn’t sure you’d come,” she murmured, her voice a mixture of relief and fear. “I’m here now.” I pulled back, trying to read her face, but she looked away quickly, as if there was something she didn’t want me to see. “Your father… he’s in his study. He doesn’t know you’re here yet.” Her gaze drifted toward the manor, her shoulders tense. My father. The last person I wanted to see, yet the reason I’d come back. There were things I needed to ask him, things I needed to understand. Like why he had betrayed Lachlan Draven’s family so long ago, why he’d torn apart a pack that had once stood as an ally. I took a deep breath, bracing myself. “I’ll go see him.” The inside of Thorne Manor felt frozen in time. Dark wood paneling lined the walls, the faint scent of leather and smoke lingered from nights my father spent in his study, and memories clung to every corner, memories I’d tried so hard to forget. My wolf bristled at the familiarity, a flicker of loyalty and resentment mixed into one. I was halfway down the hall when I noticed something—an unfamiliar scent. Musk, rich and heady, mixed with a hint of cedar and smoke. It was powerful, filling the hallway and stirring something inside me, something my wolf recognized. A low growl escaped my lips before I could stop it. I froze, barely breathing as my heart hammered against my ribs. There was only one person who carried that scent. “Looking for someone?” The voice was smooth, dark, and dangerous, with a low rumble that made my wolf tense. I turned slowly, and there he was—Lachlan Draven. Standing there like a shadow brought to life, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes were sharp, a stormy gray that seemed to see straight through me. He was tall, his presence commanding, with a quiet intensity that radiated power. “Lachlan.” I forced myself to keep my voice steady, but I couldn’t control the shiver that ran down my spine. “So you do remember me.” His mouth curved into a faint smile, but there was no warmth in it. Only something sharp, almost mocking. “Hard to forget someone who makes a habit of lurking in hallways,” I shot back, lifting my chin. I wasn’t about to let him see the effect he had on me. He pushed off the wall, taking a single step toward me, and the air between us felt charged, electric. “Funny. I thought the Thornes were the ones who liked to sneak around, doing things in the shadows.” My jaw tightened. His words were laced with accusation, and I knew exactly what he was getting at. My father’s betrayal was a wound that had never healed, not for him, not for his family—and certainly not for me. “I’m not here to argue with you, Lachlan,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm, controlled. “Oh, I don’t think you’re here to argue with anyone. Just here to do as you’re told, right? Good little daughter, back to help dear old Dad.” His tone was taunting, designed to provoke me. I took a step forward, refusing to back down. “You don’t know a thing about why I’m here.” “Don’t I?” He moved closer, so close I could feel his breath against my cheek, warm and unsettling. “I know more than you think, Emery. You’re here because your father is losing his grip on everything he built. And you’re the only pawn he has left.” The words hit hard, like a slap. I felt the sting of them, felt the anger flare up inside me. But under that anger was something else—something raw and painful. He wasn’t entirely wrong. My father’s empire was crumbling, and I was the last piece he had left to hold it together. But that didn’t mean I’d just stand by and be used. “You think you know me,” I whispered, my voice laced with defiance. “But you don’t.” “Oh, I know enough,” he replied, his gaze narrowing. “And I know exactly how this is going to play out. You’re going to help me, Emery, whether you like it or not.” The intensity in his eyes made my breath catch. I didn’t know if it was anger or something darker, something that pulled at me in a way I couldn’t explain. “Why would I help you?” I asked, my voice a whisper. His lips curved into a smirk, one that sent a shiver down my spine. “Because, Emery, I’m offering you a way to save your family. But it comes with a price.” My heart pounded, and I took a step back, suddenly feeling the weight of his presence, the strength in his gaze that seemed to hold me captive. “What kind of price?” He leaned in, his breath warm against my ear. “You. For one year, you’re mine.” The words hung in the air, heavy and final, and for a second, I couldn’t breathe. He was close, too close, and every instinct in me was screaming to get away, to run. But my wolf—she was still, watching him, caught in the same pull that I was. “One year,” he repeated softly, his voice laced with a dark promise. “Publicly, privately… You belong to me.” To be continued…
