Chapter 1: Shattered Silver, Velvet Blood
The heavy rain was hammering against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the penthouse board chamber at Silverfang Towers, blurring the bright lights of the Manhattan skyline into long streaks of red and white, and as I stood there adjusting the tailored cuffs of my black silk suit jacket, I couldn’t stop watching the storm while holding onto the smallest, stupidest hope that the man sitting behind me would remember who I was to him.
The whole room felt suffocating, thick with the smell of expensive cologne, polished leather, and that heavy, metallic vibration of suppressed wolf energy that made every hair on my arms stand up on end, because around that massive mahogany table sat twelve senior directors and pack elders, their faces looking like they were carved out of cold gray granite while they waited to watch my execution.
At the very head of the table sat Damon Vance, my husband and the Alpha CEO of Silverfang Enterprises, looking terrifyingly handsome in his dark tuxedo with his sharp jaw set in a hard line.
And when I searched his face for even a tiny flicker of the warmth we shared just this morning, his amber wolf eyes were flat and expressionless, like a brick wall I suddenly couldn't break through no matter how hard I tried.
Before I could even take a step back toward my seat, Camille Dupont smoothed down the skirt of her crisp white silk suit and stepped straight into the overhead light, holding a thick black leather file in her hands like she was carrying a trophy.
She moved with that slow, effortless grace of a predator that already knew the trap had been sprung, and there was this wicked, victorious gleam in her eyes that she didn't even bother hiding from me as she slid that heavy folder right across the polished wood, letting it land with a loud slam right in front of the lead board elder.
"We need to stop wasting our time with corporate protocol and actually look at what is happening to the financial heart of this company," Camille said, her voice sounding so smooth and poised yet dripping with pure venom as she rested her manicured fingers over the document,
"Because for the last six months, someone inside our highest security clearance tier has been systematically downloading Silver fang’s core wolf-genomic research and selling it off to our worst rivals over in Europe, and every single access record, encrypted security key, and offshore wire transfer traces straight back to Elena."
A low murmur broke out among the older board members, their sharp eyes instantly turning on me like loaded weapons, but I forced my shoulders back and took a deliberate step toward the center of the room.
"That is a complete lie, Camille, and you know it," I said, keeping my voice steady enough to slice right through the tense noise in the room while looking her straight in the eyes, "I spent four solid years building those exact security protocols from the ground up to keep our pack's genetic data safe, so why in the world would I destroy the very company I almost died to build alongside my husband?"
I turned toward the leading elder who was pulling a small silver flash drive out of the leather case, holding my hand out with absolute steady calm even though my heart was hammering violently against my ribs.
"Just give me two minutes with that drive and our primary server logs, and I can prove to everyone sitting at this table that those encryption signatures were duplicated using a backdoor bypass key that was generated from an external terminal outside this building."
"That is enough out of you, Elena," Damon’s voice suddenly boomed across the silent room, carrying that thick, suffocating weight of an Alpha command that physically slammed into my chest and forced every last drop of air right out of my lungs, making my knees tremble under the pressure.
He didn't even look up to meet my eyes, keeping his cold gaze fixed on the papers laid out in front of him while his knuckles turned completely white where he gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, "You do not command this board, you do not throw out orders to our pack elders, and I will not allow you to turn a formal security inquiry into your own emotional circus."
The lead elder cleared his throat with a raspy sound, leaning forward into the warm light with deep disgust written all over his aged face.
"The evidence that Miss Dupont has provided has already been thoroughly verified by three separate external security firms, Elena, and under both corporate governance laws and our ancient pack traditions, treason of this level leaves us with no choice but to strip you of every ounce of authority you hold."
My breath hitched sharply in my chest when I saw Damon reach inside his coat pocket and pull out a sleek, heavy white folder sealed with the bright red wax stamp of the pack elders, setting it down right in the middle of the table between us.
I knew that seal better than anyone, because it was the formal annulment and mate-severance contract, a brutal legal document created specifically to break a wolf bond into pieces and strip a recognized Alpha's mate of her title, her lineage, and every asset she owned with a single stroke of a pen.
"Damon, look at me right now," I begged softly, taking a step closer to the table and ignoring the low, dangerous growls vibrating in the throats of the elderly around us, "Look into my eyes and tell me that you honestly believe I could do this to you, look at me and tell me that four years of marriage and four years of building this empire together means so little that you’re ready to throw me away over fake numbers on a spreadsheet."
Damon’s jaw clenched tight, a tiny muscle jumping violently under his skin near his ear as he finally raised his eyes to meet mine, but the gold fire that usually burned inside his wolf gaze was completely dead, replaced by the dark, cold math of a billionaire trying to protect his bottom line at all costs.
"The markets are going to open in Tokyo in less than two hours, Elena," he said, his voice dropping into a flat, icy tone that didn't sound human at all, "If this board does not show an immediate and decisive response to this breach, our stock value is going to collapse before the sun comes up, and my first responsibility will always be to protect the survival of Silver fang Enterprises, not to shield my wife from her own paper trail."
He reached over and uncapped his heavy silver pen, his hand looking completely steady and calm as he brought the sharp nib down toward the signature line at the bottom of the thick parchment.
"Damon, please don't do this to us," I whispered, the words tearing right out of my throat before I could even stop them, because I knew what signing that paper was going to do to both of our souls.
Without hesitating for even a second, he dragged the pen across the paper and signed his name in three sharp, aggressive strokes, legally flushing away our marriage, my position, and our life together in front of the whole room.
The very second his signature was finished, an agonizing pain exploded right in the center of my chest, like someone had taken an electrified hook tied to my heart and yanked it out through my spine with a jagged blade.
A sharp gasp tore out of my mouth as the whole room started spinning around me, a sudden wave of violent heat and crippling nausea crashing through my entire body so fast that my legs gave out beneath me, forcing me to slam my hands down onto the cold edge of the table to catch myself because I refused to let any of them watch me hit the floor.
Deep inside my spirit, my wolf let out a bloody, desperate howl, thrashing against my ribs as the warm bond that connected my mind to Damon vanished into thin air, leaving behind a freezing, dead emptiness that felt worse than dying.
Camille stepped over with a small, fake smile playing on her lips, reaching into her white jacket to pull out a small paper envelope along with a yellow taxi voucher, sliding them across the dark wood until they tapped against my trembling hands.
"It really such a tragic end to your little run here, Elena," Camille murmured, her voice sounding so sugary sweet that it made my stomach turn upside down, "But you should be thankful that the Alpha is feeling generous enough to give you a severance check and cab fare, so you don't have to walk around Fifth Avenue in the freezing rain looking like a lost stray dog."
I looked down at the pathetic check sitting on the table, then raised my eyes up to meet Camille's smug, arrogant face, and without saying a single word, I reached down, grabbed the paper, and tore it into four clean pieces right in front of her face, letting the white scraps fall straight onto her expensive leather heels.
I pulled myself up tall, smoothing down the front of my wetsuit jacket, and stared right into Damon's cold eyes while ignoring the hot blood burning behind my eyelids. "You just traded the only person in this world who would have taken a bullet for you for a snake in expensive silk, Damon," I said, my voice dropping into a low, deadly quiet that cut straight through the heavy silence of the boardroom.
"And I promise you, you are going to spend every single day left of your life regretting the exact second you picked this table over me."
Before he could say anything back, two giant security guards in dark suits stepped up on either side of me, reaching out toward my arms to drag me out of the suite, but I snapped my gaze toward them and shoved right past their hands before they could touch me.
I turned my back on the elders, on Camille, and on the man I had loved more than my own breath, walking straight out through the double doors without looking back once.
I walked past dozens of employees and analysts who were standing in complete silence across the marble floor, staring at my fall from grace with wide eyes, but I kept my chin up, my posture straight, and my steps completely steady as I headed into the private elevator.
The heavy glass doors slid shut, sealing me into the quiet box, and as the car started plunging down sixty floors toward the street, I looked at my reflection in the dark glass and saw a thin trail of blood trickling down my lower lip where my wolf had bitten through my own tongue to keep from screaming during the break.
The large glass entrance doors swung open, and the freezing, rain-soaked air of Fifth Avenue hit my face like a slap, washing away the smell of corporate perfume and heavy mahogany. I wrapped my jacket tight around my shivering chest, reached into my secret inner pocket, and pulled out a clean burner phone that had been sitting dark for five full years.
With ice-cold fingers, I dialed the unlisted number I knew by heart, pressing the speaker against my ear while the storm poured down around me and soaked me to the bone.
On the third ring, the line opened up with a faint crackle, and a deep, rough voice answered from thousands of miles away.
"Speak."
