Sparks in the Silence
Chapter 1: Sparks in the Silence
Scene: The Academy of Aerith - Magic Courtyard, late afternoon.
The sun dipped low over Aerith's enchanted towers, bathing the marble courtyard in hues of fire and gold. Magic sparked gently in the air as students practiced spells, their laughter mixing with the crackle of raw energy.
Zaria stood alone near the ancient willow tree, a spellbook pressed to her chest. Her long dark braid swept over her shoulder, her violet robes fluttering slightly in the breeze.
Kael (approaching, smiling softly): "You always hide near the tree when you're thinking. Planning world domination again?"
Zaria (smirking): "Only if I get a decent rank in Spell Combat this year. Otherwise, I’ll just settle for top of the class."
Kael (laughs): "You'll get it. You always do."
Zaria's eyes lingered on him a moment too long. He was warm, steady, golden. Everything she admired.
But before she could respond, the air shifted.
The laughter of nearby students hushed. A darker energy rolled in like a cold gust.
Student (whispering): "Riven's back..."
Zaria turned her head slowly.
Riven strode into the courtyard like a storm in slow motion. Black cloak trailing behind him, silver chains glittering under the collar. His piercing eyes locked onto hers as if he already knew what she'd been saying.
Riven (low voice, stopping near them): "Planning to overthrow the world again, Princess?"
Zaria (coolly): "Shouldn’t you be charming your next victim, Riven? Someone’s probably waiting in a hallway."
Riven (mock hurt): "You wound me. I came all the way from the Shadow District just to admire your sparkling personality."
Kael cleared his throat.
Kael: "Don’t you have detention or something?"
Riven (shrugs): "I escaped. Again."
Zaria rolled her eyes, brushing past him.
Zaria: "You're not worth a hex."
Riven (calling after her): "You’re welcome to try one anytime. I love danger."
Scene: Later that evening – Spell Practice Chamber
The chamber echoed with spells. Zaria focused, her hands glowing with blue flame as she repeated an incantation.
Instructor: "Careful, Zaria. You’re pushing too much emotion into the spell. Control it."
She nodded, trying to steady her breath. But something tugged at her attention. A shadow near the back wall.
Zaria (without turning): "If you came to insult me again, I’m not in the mood."
Riven (stepping into light): "I didn’t come to insult you. I came to ask... why Kael?"
Zaria: "What are you talking about?"
Riven (softly): "He’s safe. You like safe. But you’re not safe, Zaria. You burn. I see it. Even if he doesn’t."
She froze, spell flickering in her hand.
Zaria: "You're wrong. You don’t know anything about me."
Riven (stepping closer): "Maybe. Or maybe I know exactly what it looks like to hide behind perfect smiles and plans that aren’t yours."
A silence fell between them.
Then the ground shuddered.
Screams echoed from the main hall.
Instructor (yelling): "Everyone out! Dark magic breach!"
Zaria turned to run but stumbled. A shard of dark energy struck near her, knocking her off her feet.
She braced for pain—but strong arms caught her.
Riven (gritting his teeth): "Got you. You’re not dying on my watch."
Zaria (dazed): "Why... why would you..."
Riven: "Because I’m not the villain you think I am. And you’re not as alone as you pretend."
He pulled her close as chaos erupted around them. The academy lights dimmed, magical barriers flaring.
Zaria (softly): "I still don’t trust you."
Riven (smiling faintly): "Good. I wouldn’t trust me either. But you feel this... don’t you?"
Zaria looked into his eyes. For a moment, the world faded. There was only heat... and a flicker of something that scared her more than any curse.
Scene: Infirmary, hours later
Zaria lay on a crystal cot, the soft blue glow of healing magic humming beneath her. She opened her eyes to see Riven leaning against the wall, arms crossed.
Zaria: "You waited?"
Riven: "I’m not heartless. Just reckless."
Zaria: "That’s not comforting."
Riven (chuckles): "Didn’t mean it to be. But you were amazing back there."
Zaria (teasing): "Are you complimenting me? Is the world ending?"
Riven: "Maybe. Or maybe it’s just beginning to make sense."
She caught the sincerity in his eyes—and something else. Longing? Regret?
Zaria (softly): "You confuse me, Riven."
Riven: "Good. Confusion means you’re thinking. And if you're thinking about me... well, that’s progress."
Outside the window, the moon rose high above Aerith.
But inside the walls of the academy, a spark had caught—and neither of them knew just how far it would burn.
