Chapter 1 Cracks in the Perfect Lie
I slammed my phone facedown on my thigh. My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was about to come through my ribs.
I shut my eyes and kept telling myself the same thing. It couldn't be him.
Rowan and I had seven years together. Our lives were so wound up in each other's that I couldn't picture mine without him. And the engagement party was two days away, at a private estate in Ashbourne.
"It's a coincidence. Westbrook's a big city. Plenty of guys have a nick on their index finger."
I sucked in a few breaths of the freezing air and opened the top comment again.
Down in the replies, the girl behind the SweetPeach_Lily account—Lily Parker—got mouthier with every post.
SweetPeach_Lily: [His fiancée sits on the title and gives him nothing. No wonder he's checked out. Men want somebody with a pulse, not a cold fish.]
SweetPeach_Lily: [Daddy pulled his Sterling Street strings to get his fiancée fired from that architecture firm—for me! Then handed me her job. Fat paycheck, zero work.]
SweetPeach_Lily: [His fiancée's out of a job now. Daddy only gives her 10 grand a month, but he hands me 20 to burn on whatever I want!]
Every word hit like a gut punch, and I felt each one land.
A week before, I'd been let go for no reason from one of Westbrook's top architecture firms. It had been dumping snow that day while I curled up in Rowan's arms and cried.
He'd kissed the top of my head, so soft about it.
"Celeste, it's just a job. So you lost it—who cares? From here on I'll give you 10 grand a month. Stay home, work on your designs. If you get restless, go grab afternoon tea in the Arts District."
I'd pouted and said I didn't want to be kept woman. He'd laughed and tweaked my nose.
"I want to take care of you. You're the only woman I'll ever provide for, Celeste."
Now those little speeches made my skin crawl. The bottom just dropped out of me.
My hand was shaking as I opened Lily's profile.
SweetPeach_Lily: [Day 215 of Daddy spoiling me rotten. They're getting engaged—but I picked the invitations! I'm obsessed with ivy. Aren't they gorgeous?]
The photo showed a gorgeous gold-foil invitation, the twin of the one in my study drawer.
I remembered the way Rowan's blue eyes had gone soft when he handed it to me.
"Ivy means loyalty that never budges. It's a promise—you and me, till death."
SweetPeach_Lily: [Day 198 of Daddy spoiling me rotten. Today's his seven-year anniversary with the fiancée, but he blew off Little Miss Boring to take me to The Phantom of the Opera downtown!]
That day I'd taken off work, ordered a mille-crêpe cake, and had a pair of cuff links ready that I'd designed myself. What I got was a call from Rowan saying something had caught fire on Sterling Street.
My fingers were so cold I could barely hang on to the phone. I scrolled all the way down to her first post.
SweetPeach_Lily: [Met my dream man in Sunhaven today! He clipped me with his car, but he was such a gentleman about it… Looks like he's got a fiancée somewhere far away. Whatever. A man that perfect is worth stealing.]
It was posted March 4, 2025—the exact day Rowan went to Sunhaven for work.
My stomach heaved.
I couldn't keep it down. I bolted to the bathroom and threw up until there was nothing left.
244 days. Seven months, 22 days. Every night Rowan swore he was stuck late or out schmoozing clients on Sterling Street, he'd been in another woman's bed. He'd even burned down the architecture career I cared about more than my own pride, just to keep her happy.
After a while I splashed cold water on my face, gripped the edge of the sink, and stood up. Then I took a screenshot of every post, one after another.
Rowan got home that evening.
When he saw me on the couch with my eyes red and swollen, he hurried over and took my face in his hands, playing concerned.
"What's wrong, my Celeste?"
The doorbell went before the last word was out of his mouth.
A sweet, syrupy little voice came over the intercom.
"Hi! Got your Uber Eats!"
Same exact voice I'd just heard in Lily's videos.
Rowan froze. He thanked her fast, stepped out, and pulled the door shut behind him. A few minutes later he came back with two Starbucks cups, trying way too hard to look casual.
"Saw Starbucks had a new drink, so I ordered it in."
I raised my eyes to those blue ones that always got to me.
"Rowan," I said quietly, "anything you've been keeping from me lately?"
