The weight of silence
Lily Sat at the back of the classroom, sketching quietly in her notebook, her pencil moving in slow, deliberate strokes .The hum of conversation around her barely registered. Her world was a small circle of muted colors and quiet spaces,a world she had learned to navigate alone . Her father's absence loomed over her like a shadow, something unspoken but ever-present. He left when she was eight, promising to come back for her,but he never did.Over the years, she stopped expecting him to.
It wasn't that lily didn't care. She did. she'd spent nights staring at the stars, wondering where he was,if he ever thought about her. But after years of disappointment, she stopped hoping. Stopped dreaming of reunion.
"Avery, we're partners for the project ,"came a voice that snapped her from her thoughts
Lily looked up.Ava stood In front of the classroom, a confident smile on her face, eyes scanning the room for her new partner.
"Avery? That's you, right ?" Ava repeated, her smile widened as she walked toward lily's desk.
Lily nodded, her heart racing slightly at the sight of ava. she'd seen around- loud, funny, the kind of person everyone seems to love. She didn't fit into lily's world, but there was something about her that made lily feel......seen,even if just for a moment.
Ava dropped her bag onto the desk with a soft thud." So,how do you want to dive into the project ?"
Lily hesitated, still trying to get used to the idea of working with someone who didn't make her feel like an outsider, who didn't seem to Carry the weight of silence that lily always did."we could split it up evenly,I guess ," she said ,her voice barely above a whisper.
Ava raised an eyebrow but didn't comment on Lily's quiet nature. Instead she smiled. "Sounds like a plan. I'll grab the materials after school . How about we meet up later to work on it?"
Lily nodded again, not sure what to say.Her heart thudding in her chest, and she tried to calm the flutter of nervousness.Ava seemed easy to talk to but Lily had always struggled with connection - especially with people who were so........open.
After class ,Lily grabbed her stuff slowly, avoiding the bustling group of students
laughing and chatting. She felt like a ghost, moving unnoticed through the hallway. She reached her locker, but just as she was about to Open it she saw ava standing nearby, waiting for her .
"I am really glad we're partners ,"Ava said
her voice light, almost carefree."I have seen you around, but we've never really talked. You are like always in your own world ."
Lily smiled faintly, unsure how to respond.she has always preferred her own world. It was quieter. Safer. But there was something about Ava's presence that felt different - almost inviting.
"Yeah. I guess I am ," Lily said, glancing at Ava. "I am not really good with people."
Ava shrugged."I get it. I've had my own struggles with family .But you seems like you'd get it too,"
Lily froze."what do you mean?"
Ava's smile faded slightly, and shifted on her feet. "Nevermind. Let's just get to work, yeah? I'll meet you after school at the pay. Same time?"
Lily nodded again, unsure of what to say next. She didn't know why Ava had brought up something so personal, but there was unspoken understanding between them. And shared feelings that they Both carried burden that no one else saw.
As Ava turned and walked away, Lily's mind raced, she didn't know what had just happened, but there was a connection there -something unexpected.she found herself looking forward to the evening,to a moment she didn't even as lonely as the ones she was used to.
