She had given up on love. He had given up on marriage.

At thirty four, Amara Bennett no longer believes that a man could truly love her. After years of heartbreak and rejection, all she wants now is a child and a peaceful home. As a primary school teacher who has always had a soft spot for children, she decides to take an unusual path to get the family she has always dreamed of.

Kieran Hawthorne, a wealthy and emotionally distant businessman, has no interest in falling in love again. After a failed marriage, his only concern is his six year old twin daughters, who need someone they can trust.

When their paths cross, the two make an arrangement neither of them expects to regret.

A marriage without love.

No promises.

No emotional attachment.

Just two strangers agreeing to give each other what they need.

But living under the same roof has a way of changing things.

Soon, the rules they made for their marriage begin to feel harder to follow, the children grow closer to the woman they never expected to have, and feelings neither of them wants begin to surface.

And when the past comes knocking, they may discover that keeping their hearts out of the marriage is much harder than they ever imagined.

They agreed never to fall in love.

The Match
I'm not looking for love. Amara Bennett almost swiped left. The sentence on the man's dating profile was unusual enough to make her stop. Most men wrote things like looking for my soulmate or ready to settle down. Some posted pictures besides expensive cars or wrote long paragraphs about loyalty and honesty. But this man had written only one sentence. I'm not looking for love. Amara stared at the screen. "At least he's honest." She was sitting on her bed with her phone in her hand while the sounds of her family came from the sitting room. Her sisters were arguing over the television remote, her mother was complaining about someone leaving a cup in the kitchen, and her father was watching the evening news. She should have been preparing her lesson notes. Instead, she was on a dating app again. At thirty-four, Amara was tired of being asked why she wasn't married. She had deleted the app twice and downloaded it again. Every time she decided she was done with relationships, another family gathering or conversation about marriage sent her back. But she wasn't really looking for love anymore. She wanted a child. A home. A family. She wanted someone to come home to and a child who needed her. Maybe that was why she loved teaching. Children were simple. If they were happy, they laughed. If they were angry, they showed it. Adults were different. Amara looked at the man's profile again. His name was Kieran Hawthorne. Forty years old. There was only one picture of him, dressed in a simple dark shirt. No flashy car. No ridiculous captions. Just his face and another sentence. I'm looking for someone who understands what marriage is supposed to mean. Amara frowned. "Then why are you on a dating app?" She almost swiped left. Instead, she swiped right. It's a match. Her heart jumped. She immediately shook the feeling away. "No." A message appeared. Good evening. She replied. I was wondering why someone who isn't looking for love is on a dating app. His answer came quickly. I'm looking for marriage. Amara raised an eyebrow. Without love? Without the expectation of love. She stared at the screen. That's unusual. I know. Why? There was a pause. Because I've already learned what happens when love becomes the foundation of a marriage. And what happens? People change. Amara smiled despite herself. That's a very depressing answer. It's an honest one. She found herself becoming curious. So what exactly are you looking for? His reply took longer. I have children. I'm looking for a woman who genuinely likes children. Someone who can become part of their lives. Amara's attention sharpened. How many? Two. Boys or girls? Girls. Twins. Six years old. She smiled. And what would this woman get in return? Security. Respect. A comfortable life. Amara frowned. You're making it sound like a business transaction. Isn't that what you're asking about? She thought about it. I don't want to marry someone just because he can provide things. His answer came quickly. Neither do I. That surprised her. They continued talking. He asked about her work, and she told him she was a primary school teacher. So you like children? Very much. Why? She thought for a moment. Because they need someone to love them. And I think I have too much love to give. There was a pause. Then he asked: Would you be willing to meet? She hesitated. About marriage? Yes. It was crazy. A stanger. A dating app. Marriage. Yet she typed: How soon? The next afternoon, Amara stood outside a quiet restaurant, trying to convince herself she wasn't nervous. She had chosen a simple dress and tied her hair back. She checked the time. Kieran was five minutes late. A black car pulled into the parking area. A tall man stepped out wearing dark trousers and a white shirt. His eyes found hers. She knew immediately. He walked toward her. "You're early." She raised an eyebrow. "You were late." He checked his watch. "Five minutes." "Still late." A faint smile appeared. "Fair enough." They entered the restaurant and sat at a quiet table. After a moment, Kieran spoke. "I want us to be honest with each other. If this doesn't work, we walk away." "Agreed." "If we continue, there will be conditions." "I expected that." "And you can have your own." Amara nodded. Then he asked a question she had been avoiding. "Why do you want this?" She looked down at her hands. "I want a child." He was quiet. "I've always wanted one," she continued. "Then why not simply have one?" "Because I don't want to have a child without a father." He nodded. "I also don't want to marry a man who expects me to spend my life proving that I love him." "Why?" She hesitated. "Because every time I've loved someone, I've cared more." She looked away. "I've been left. I've been ghosted. Sometimes I think men like the idea of me until they actually get to know me." Kieran watched her quietly. "There is something else," she said. "What?" "I have a scar." His expression changed slightly. "When I was two, I was badly burned. It left a scar on my lower back and changed the shape of part of my body." She swallowed. "Some men don't like it. Some pretend it doesn't matter and then disappear." She gave a small smile. "So I've stopped believing a man will see everything and still choose me." Kieran was silent for a moment. "Is that why you don't want love?" "Partly." "And the other reason?" "My parents." She sighed. "They're good people, but they're worried because I'm thirty four and still unmarried. I want a family, but I also don't want to spend the rest of my life chasing love." Kieran nodded. "So you think you can have that with me?" "I don't know you." "Exactly." "That's why I'm here." He leaned back. "What would you expect from me?" "Respect. Honesty. Freedom." "You'll have them." "I don't want to be controlled because I'm your wife." "You won't be." "I don't want to be reminded that everything belongs to you." "You won't be." She looked at him. "I don't want you to think because you're rich, you own me." His expression remained calm. "You'll never hear that from me." Then he asked: "And what would you give me?" She answered without hesitation. "A peaceful home." "My daughters?" "I'll care for them." "What if they don't accept you?" "I won't force them." "And if they become attached to you?" She smiled. "I'll love them." For the first time, something softened in Kieran's eyes. "I think we should continue this conversation." Amara nodded. Neither of them knew what they were starting. Neither was looking for love. Neither trusted it. But sometimes, life begins in the exact place where you least expect it. And sometimes, two people can enter a marriage determined not to fall in love, only to discover that the heart has never been very good at following rules.
