Tristan’s POV .
“Tristan it’s time for you to settle down with someone”
I glanced up from where I was resting on my chesterfield sofa, mid-shift to keep from indenting the material, as I’d trained myself to do. My mother stood in front of me with a disapproving look on her face. Her expression was the definition of disappointment . Slim nose upturned, devil red lips twitching. I already knew where this conversation was heading and it wasn’t going to end good.. I knew my mother.
“This again”? I said.
“You are not getting any younger Tristan”,she said folding her arms across her chest, the many bracelets lined up in her arms made of diamond jingled as she moved.
I’m twenty-seven years old, I don’t think I’m too old to be single and I don’t need any pressure at the moment” I shot back.
“It’s time for you to start your own family so we can give a head start to the next successor of the business” she pushed
“There are so many women interested in you, She pressed on. If you don’t take the necessary measures I’ll hand over the business to your younger brother Jason” she finished.
My eyes widened
She couldn’t do that, not after all the work and devotion I had put in this business. Was she going to throw it all down the drain simply because I wasn’t ready to get married?
“Mom”.. I said in a low warning tone gritting my teeth.
“You wouldn’t do that to me”
She let out a cold laugh
“I gave birth to you and you have known me for twenty seven years you should know I never go back on my words Tristan, I am not sentimental. I always do what is best for this family regardless of how rash or brutal the decisions might be”
My mother never went back on her words that I knew, but how could she blackmail me like this?
“Isn’t this a little abrupt? I need time to think about it, you can’t just barge in here and expect me to go through with this”
She plastered a fake smile on her face
“Eight months Tristan, eigh…tttt months she emphasized , that’s all you have to get a girl to get married to else everything goes to Jason”
“I’m giving you eight months to court someone and not a day more, after that you must bring her to me for me to decide if she’s befitting to be your wife”
At this point I didn’t know what to do, I knew my mother had already won this round and I had been defeated, there was nothing left to say, I had to do what she said
“I’ll be leaving now, remember to go to the office later in the day to sign those documents”
And with that she left
I collapsed back in the sofa. Why was she adamant about marriage? I loved my life the way it was— satisfactory and alone, I didn’t need a girlfriend .
I was at a point of confusion and uncertainty, and I didn’t know what to do. An idea quickly popped up in my head
What if I get someone to play as my girlfriend in order to trick my mother? We could date for eight months and break up right after the engagement . I’ll just tell my mother I was too hurt to move on and she’ll understand since I never had a stable girlfriend after Ciara.
I smiled sinisterly.
I was one of the most influential and eligible bachelors in Boston no girl could refuse me. I would do whatever it took, even if it meant paying for the services of the girl
At the end of the day I outsmarted my mother..
