Riley's POV
Arriving at work, I quickly parked my car and went in.
"Good morning Riley!" shouted Sergeant Brookes from behind the front desk.
"Good morning!" I shouted back as I rushed upstairs to my desk. This last year has been a very hectic one for us. A serial killer is loose in our city and he or she is quite elusive. The entire detective unit of the police department was on the case. After the first few months and leads went cold, we were all asked to go back to regular duty. That is carrying out our duties of solving other cases that were actually solvable.
"Morning Brian," I greeted my partner as I reached my desk.
"Morning to you too," he greeted with his usual cheeriness, "we only have paper works today so lets take a look over that serial killer case."
"OK great."
A few hours later I was so engrossed in going through the files on the different victims of the Throat Slasher, that I didn't even realize my brother standing behind me.
"Hey sis," he greeted with a smile on his face.
Shrieking, I jump up from my chair with my hand over my heart. I glared at my brother while he doubled over laughing his a** of with my partner.
"Humph, I hate you both"
"No you don't," replied my partner still laughing.
"You love us," added my brother, " you should have seen your face."
"You bastard."
"Easy sis."
"Why the hell would you scare me like that?" I asked while glaring at him.
He only shrugged while laughing still. He is starting to irritate me.
"Anyways sis, you are starting to get obsessed with this case you know"
"No am not, am just determined," I retorted. If I was just some detective, I would have been in big trouble seeing that he is a lieutenant and my superior. But as my big brother, O'Brian Dunn, he always cut me some slack.
"Actually you are obsessed, especially since...."
I cut him off before he could finish his statement.
"Don't go there brother."
Both he and my partner, Brian Sing, looked at me sympathetically. I hated the way they looked at me. It only made me feel like a broken toy which am not. Trying not to look weak in front of my partner and brother, I forced a smile. Not fully buying my smile, he relented.
"OK sis am sorry, carry on with what you were doing but please take care of yourself."
"Will do."
He looked at me once more before he left to his office. I love my brother dearly, even though he an be an a** at times. I guess it's all part of his charming personality. Shaking off the lingering sadness from the conversation and avoiding the gaze of my partner, I dived right back into work. After going through a couple more files and still coming up empty with no leads, I decided to get up from around my desk. Looking at the time, I realized it was six in the evening so I decided to head home after saying bye to my partner.
