The drive to the hospital felt endless, each second stretching into an eternity. Lily was taken away in an ambulance, its siren wailing as it disappeared into the night. Vail climbed in beside her, refusing to leave the little girl's side.
"Let me stay with her! I'm her mother!" Vanessa cried, her voice raw and desperate as she tried to push past the paramedics.
