I rushed to shower and change and dropped Mama off on the other side of town, before meeting up with my BFF, Penni. We had a longstanding monthly night out tradition. Usually, Mama kept the kids, but I knew she had her “date” with Bernard, so Cole and Syd’s pop-up puppy surprise gave me the perfect opportunity to rope them in. Not that they wouldn’t have watched the kids anyway, but this time I didn’t feel guilty about busting up possible plans that they may have had.
When I arrived Penni was already seated at a booth and two drinks in.
“Starting early?”
“Yes, rough day.”
“What happened?”
“Charlie and I broke up.”
“What I’m shocked?” I said sarcastically.
“Shut up Darby!”
I laughed.
“Seriously, though again?”
“Yes, but I think it’s for good this time.”
