When Amelia woke again, she was lying in a hospital bed, her entire body weak and aching.
"You're awake?" Dominic's voice came from beside her, carrying a barely noticeable tension. "How could you be so careless while driving? You severely injured that person. Luckily, the victim's family relented and agreed to a settlement."
"It wasn't me who hit them." Amelia struggled to sit up, her gaze firmly meeting his. "Caleb caused the accident and fled, then turned around and framed me!"
Dominic paused, his tone miraculously gentle, as if he were patiently persuading her. "Things have already come to this. Just sign this liability confirmation, and the matter will be closed."
He took a document from his briefcase and handed it to Amelia.
She glanced at the paper, her eyes full of irony. "You want me to take the fall for her? Not a chance."
"Amelia!"
His tone turned cold as he looked down at her, his gaze as sharp as a knife. "Amelia is your own sister! She's in poor health and can't handle the stress. It's just a signature. It won't cause you any real harm. Can't you stop being so stubborn?"
"Amelia always told me you targeted her and were jealous of her. I used to have my doubts and thought you were just introverted. But now I see just how terrible you really are."
Amelia looked at his blatantly biased accusations, her heart squeezed by an invisible hand.
She trembled with rage, her eyes reddening. "The evidence is right there! You're condemning me without even knowing the facts. Who's the terrible one here?"
Dominic's gaze turned piercing. "Enough. Stop making a scene. Just sign it, and this ends here."
The despair from her past life and the injustice of this moment intertwined, nearly suffocating her, yet it also made her more clear-headed.
She knew that Dominic still needed her right now and wouldn't actually do anything too extreme. This certainty gave her a bit more courage.
Seeing her stubborn refusal, a flicker of impatience crossed Dominic's eyes. His tone turned icy. "If you won't sign, that's fine. I'll sign it myself."
Amelia's heart clenched. "What do you mean?"
"I'm your husband," Dominic stated unequivocally. "You hit your head in this car accident. The doctors say there might be minor brain damage, so you're temporarily without civil capacity. As your primary guardian, I am fully within my rights to sign the confession for you."
"Dominic!" Amelia shook with fury, her eyes reddening, her voice full of accusation and defiance. "Is Caleb the only one who's ever mattered to you? She caused an accident and fled, and not only do you not hold her accountable, but you're forcing me to take the blame for her! What am I to you in your eyes? A tool to curry favor with her, or a stepping stone you can sacrifice whenever you want?"
Her chest heaved violently. "You're disregarding right and wrong. This is a crime! You can't do this!"
Dominic's gaze was sharp, carrying a blatant warning. "You'd better cooperate."
Amelia looked into his cold eyes, her heart stinging as if pricked by countless needles.
She bit her lip hard, refusing to back down. "I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I take the blame for someone else? I'm calling the police!"
Dominic's face turned completely dark. He pulled out his phone and made a call. Two bodyguards immediately pushed the door open and entered.
"Take her phone. Watch her closely. Don't let her contact anyone."
The bodyguards moved to seize Amelia's phone. She clutched it tightly, refusing to let go, struggling to get up. "Dominic, you can't be so lawless!"
But as soon as she propped herself up, the two bodyguards grabbed her shoulders from both sides and forcefully pushed her back onto the bed.
The force was so great she couldn't move at all. Her wrists ached from their grip. In the end, her phone was forcibly taken away.
Struggling, Amelia screamed at Dominic. "You have no sense of right and wrong! You'll do anything for Caleb! You'll regret this!"
Dominic stood by the bed, his eyes utterly calm, as if watching an irrelevant farce.
Only after the bodyguards had her fully restrained did he look away and turn to leave.
As he reached the door, he paused, his tone suddenly softening slightly. "Don't worry. I'll handle the rest. I won't let anything really happen to you."
