44 CONNOR I thought she was asleep at first, she was so still. I got into bed with her and embraced her from behind. I kissed her shoulder. “I’m glad you’re still awake.” I kissed her neck, stroked her arm. She withdrew. It was only a slight movement, but it spoke volumes. I felt as though she’d slapped me.
