Chapter 14: His Backstory
1938 Words
"Ok, you ate, and I hope you still remember, you need us your backstory," Says Yonezu looking at Ken
"Yes..."
He says this and reaches for his mask.
"What are you doing?" Ask Yonezu
"Don't worry, this is only for refreshing my memory, I promise I will not do something bad"
He puts on his mask, and the mask eyes start glowing green.
In the backstory scene, we see little Ken playing with his mom
"Isn't he the cutest thing you ever saw?"
"I know, something cuter," Says the man while looking at her
It was always like this, my mom, Miyabe, was the happiest person alive when they adopted me, while my dad, Katsura, only cared about my mother.
Katsura was a king of some sort of a kingdom from very far, while my mother was just a common city folk. When he was wandering the city with a carriage, he saw her and couldn't resist "I saw more beautiful women in my life, but that one, had something special," So he ordered the driver to stop the carriage, and right there, right in the middle of the city, he proposed her out of nowhere. Of course, she was surprised at first, but she didn't have a choice, when the king of a kingdom comes to you are proposed to you, you don't have many choices. She was still remembering what her last husband did to her. She wasn't letting him drink as much as he liked and so he got mad and almost killed my mother by burning the house he was in, luckily she escaped.
A big wedding took place, all the people in the kingdom got invited. My mother was still nervous at that point. People from the city had nothing with the king, he didn't do bad things, but he didn't do good things either, so people were neutral. That changed after she married my mother. Since he love her so much he was determined to change everything for her. It turned out it was like that, even tho it didn't look like it, the king was a very kind and sweet man. Even tho he didn't like the idea, he accepted to adopt me since my mother wanted that badly. he didn't want it because he tough that all of my mother's love will get split between them, he loved that much my mother, he didn't want anyone to get involved in their relationship, not even his own kid.
They adopted me at a very young age so I don't remember much from that time until I got older. I remembered that around my tenth birthday, my mother decided to give me as a present a training session with my own dad. She saw me playing in the garden with sticks using them as swords.
*Scene from that time*
I was very mature even tho I was young, so I took it very seriously, for the most part...
I entered the big training area and started looking around, Katsura was waiting for me there dressed in his combat armor,
"Ken was it? says Katsura
"I don't know, why should I know? Isn't that your job?" says Ken
"You took the sarcasm from your mother, too bad your jokes are bad,"
After he said this some royal guards entered the training grounds
"Your majesty, you called us here," says one of the soldiers.
Near Ken came a soldier that based on the armor he had, looked like it was their captain
"Fight me, soldiers, Show me that your armor didn't rust!" says Katsura and draws his blade
The soldier that was near Ken kneel to reach Ken's height and say
"Don't you think that sword is way too big"
Ken got surprised hearing that their captain was a woman
"Um, yes"
"You will probably learn how to use that, just don't give up kid" she stopped talking to Ken and started looking at the fights
Ken did the same thing and got surprised
Even tho Katsura was the king of the kingdom, he was a very talented fighter. He took 2 soldiers at the time and didn't have anything against it. He was faster than the soldiers dodging every strike the soldiers tried to land. while he was still fighting he looks at Ken
"Hope you not watching it just for entertaining, you should learn something from this"
"Yea..."
"Sir you let your guard down!" shouts the last soldier before almost striking Katsura. But with one quick move, he dodges the attack and kicks the soldier pinning him down
"Was I letting my guard down, or you became more careless?" After he said this he looked around him, every soldier was defeated.
He sees Ken and says
"You are next,"
The captain that was near Ken thought it was talking about her and she shouted
"YES SIR!"
"Not you Ayaka, I am talking about the kid"
Ken got confused and say
"Isn't that a little too unfair?"
"Life isn't fair, child, in this world, you either beat or be beaten, your choice what will happen"
He got to the middle of the arena
I don't think I need this" says Katsura and make his weapon disappear
Ken thinks
"There is no way I beat him in combat, but I just can't stand here doing nothing. Maybe I can... outsmart him,"
Ken was very smart since her mother was as well very smart, she taught Ken how to evade most of his problems by just being smarter than them,
"Why are you just staring at me? come and hit me"
Ken being nervous smiles at him and say
"I am not that dumb, in every situation, those who are defending have the advantage over those who are attacking!"
"You learned that from your mother too. Okay then, be it your way" right after saying this he rushed to kick Ken,
Ken since he was already small he ducked and dodged the kick and tried to kick as well back. He used all his force to kick but nothing happened. Katsura didn't even try to defend, the kick was more painful for Ken rather for Katsura
"Good idea, bad execution. But why lie, I was indeed surprised," And reach his had to Ken to handshake him
Ken looks a little bit confused but accepts to handshake Katsura. and with one quick move, Katsura drags Ken and put him on his shoulders, and started sprinting around the arena
Ken that was scared of highs and afraid he will fall he shouts
"Stop this I am not a kid anymore!'
"Next time when you don't want me to do this, you should strike me harder so I will not be able to use my legs ever again,"
Everything was looking great... until it didn't...
Someone slammed the doors from the training ground, he looked like he was running to get here, it was one of the butlers
"My king!.. the princess... Didn't wake up this morning,"
"Huh?" Katsura was looking like he was seeing a ghost
His grip on Ken let loose and Ken fall. Katsura rushed out of the training fields
"Hey! Wait a bit!" Says Ken, get's up and started running to catch him
He didn't catch him until they were already at Miyabe room
Ken enters and sees every butler staying silent near the bed and Katsura kneeled in front of the bed shouting
"MY QUEEN! WAKE UP!"
Ken looked shocked and thought,
"What did just... happen?"
Miyabe was breathing, but she was not conscious, she fall into some sort of coma.
After that incident, the kingdom became darker, Katsura locked himself into his room and didn't leave even for food
Ken was doing his normal routine but it was sadder. He cried every time he ate since the cooks always made him spaghetti, even tho he licked them he was always thinking that his mother was doing them better. That's from where Ken's spaghetti obsession comes from.
The city folks were revolting already since their king didn't show up for such a long time. ken was doing weekly visits to Miyabe bringing her flowers and praying something good will happen.
After four years.
When Ken was going to Miyabe's room with flowers, from her room Katsura left the room. Ken was surprised since he didn't see him often leaving his room. Katsura looks at Ken and smiles at him,
"Nice bouquet, I am sure she will like it,"
Ken got confused but continued with what he was doing,
He enters and does his typical stuff telling her what he did today
"Today I trained more with Ayaka, she tough me how to be more agile, I had a great time," He says and he close his eyes, But then he heard a voice
"Good job Ken"
He opens his eyes and sees Miyabe that was looking at Ken
Ken got shocked, he wasn't able to talk a thing.
"Come closer, I want to give you something," She says this and makes something appear in her hand, it was a mask that looked like a demon. The same mask Ken is wearing to this date.
"From where you have this," Says Ken
"Dear, there are some stories I didn't have time to tell you. What I have time to tell you is to leave, take a boat and get out of here"
"To where?"
"To where the wind is guiding you," She says this and faints again
Ken after he saw and heard that he started crying near her.
The next day. Ken was in his room drawing what looked like the castle and wrote everywhere on the paper
"TO WHERE?"
Ken's door suddenly opened. Katsura was the one who opened the door. Tears were falling from his eyes and say,
"She... Stopped breathing..."
Ken was once again shocked. Everyone in the kingdom went to the ceremony made afterward, everyone expects of Ken, that was at the kingdom port alone, he was preparing a small wooden boat while thinking
"Why did she said, that I need to leave?"
"Yes, I think this is good enough," He said while looking at the boat.
That day was raining.
Ken looked back at the kingdom, and start crying
"Hope you will be good without me" And jumps in his boat and cuts the rope that was holding the boat to the port.
He sealed a bit while looking at the castle but something strange happened. The castle started glowing green and right after that a lot of spectral dragons started to appear from the castle
"What the..." He didn't get to finish his sentence because huge lighting struck near him, making his boat shake, and Ken hit his head and fainted
He woke up many hours later. he was on a port and people were looking at him. They were the one that saved him. From all the people that were questioning each other what's the deal with that kid a young girl come to Ken and was worried
"Are you ok? can you move?"
Ken gets up and says
"Calm down, you can't put that many questions to a just woke up human,"
Then the village elder that was there shouts
"The kid is okay you can leave now," And everyone left, only Lisa remained
"How did you ended up here?"
Ken looks at his mask that was attached to his belt
"I don't know, but something or someone wanted me to be here"
From that day he knew Lisa and started doing quests and other things, to end up right where he is right now.
