CHAPTER SEVEN

I felt my lips pursed a bit when I saw Spencer waiting for me outside of our house. He looked good in the shirt he was wearing. He was wearing his shades, so I couldn't help but criticize the way he wore his clothes when I decided to get out of our house. "What are you doing here, and why are you dressed so strangely?" I asked curiously. He slowly removed his shade and gently hung it on the black shirt he was wearing. He smiled mockingly at me when he saw my brows were shut because of so much confusion while looking at him. "I'm just checking to see if you're going to accept the job I offered you yesterday, or if you have any plans to get away from me," he joked. I jokingly pinched his waist, which made him burst into laughter. I was the one who decided to pull him closer to the motorcycle he was using whenever he had a race. Spencer's hobby is participating in motorcycle-related races. He is occasionally able to take home some trophies, but it appears that I saw him crying in the corner more often than not because he lost his bet. For me, there’s nothing fascinating about the things Spencer is obsessed with. He's an achiever when it comes to academics, but I can't say that he's also an achiever when it comes to his hobbies. He loves to play basketball, and racing is his passion. For me, I’m not fascinated by the sports he chooses. What, after all, is so fascinating about basketball and racing? That's my own opinion. If you are fascinated by the sports of basketball and racing, then me? I'm not. I don't know if I'm just a boring person or if I'm just underestimating the things that make my best friend happy. "Mayden is the one who will train you, Solanna," he said when he handed me the helmet he was holding earlier. "I can't watch you for now because we have a game later. I have a meeting this afternoon, so even if I want to watch you, I can't do it." "Don't worry. I can be alone even without you," I said, which made him chuckle a bit. "You don't have to watch me all the time. I'm not a kid anymore." He shrugged before he rode the motorcycle. "Then, that's okay. I wish that my employees didn't bully you, especially now that I fired one of their friends yestereday." I felt my brows furrow a bit because of what he said. I had an idea that he fired one of his employees yesterday, but it never entered my mind that he would take his threat seriously. I mean, I thought he was just joking. Plus, as far as I know, Spencer is such a good employer when it comes to their business, so to hear the word "fired" from him is really surprising. Because of so much shock, I could no longer answer what he said. I subsconciously turned to look at him. I was not even able to feel that my lips parted a bit because of so much shock. He was the one who pulled me closer to him because I was no longer able to move because of confusion and a bit of shock from what he said. When he saw that until now I was still not wearing the helmet he gave me a while ago, he turned to look at me and smiled a bit. I didn't fight back when he took it from my hand, and he himself wore it on me. He said, "Stop staring at me," while looking at me. He added, "I won't catch you in case you fall," which made me roll my eyes and purse my lips. "Don't worry. I don't like you." "Falling off the motorcycle is what I'm referring to, Solanna," he said, which made my face redden a bit. He chuckled when he saw my reaction, so I couldn't help but look away from his gaze. "You're so assuming." "Shut up. Just drive!" I hissed and pushed him back. I watched him turn on the motorcycle engine. I didn't put my hands on his waist, so before he touched the handle of the motorcycle, he pulled both my hands and he himself put them on his waist. "Tighten your grip," he said, which made me slowly nod my head. Spencer drives slowly. I don't know if he's just deliberately slowing down his drive, but I'm sure he's just doing it because he's with me. At least he’s not showing off his skills to me now. He just continued to drive slowly until we reached the cafe. "Look for Mayden. She already knew that you were here now," he said, which made me nod my head and get off the motorcycle. "I can't take you inside because I'm late. I'll check on you before lunch if I have free time." "You don't need to check on me, Spencer," I said, which made him purse his lips. He looks like he's just holding back a smile while still looking at me. "We're not in a relationship. I can do it on my own. You don't need to check on me from time to time. Just like what you said, I'll just tell Mayden that I'm the new employee she needs to train. Is that it?" "Why does it sound like you're ranting about what I said?" My lips parted a bit because of what he said. He burst into laughter when he saw that I was surprised and annoyed at the same time while looking at him. I know that he already thinks that he is right based on my reaction. The way I talked for a while and the words that came out of my mouth are pure rant. "What the f**k are you saying?" "Do you want me to court you so that I have the right to check on you every time?" he kidded. I knew that he was just annoying me, so I couldn’t help but pinch his waist to stop him from thinking things he knew that I didn’t want. It's his hobby to think obscene things, and do you know what's more annoying? He is already thinking obscene things about me, and to his dissatisfaction, he will also take me to his mania. This is one of the reasons why I don't like him. Yes, we're friends, but it doesn't mean that I always tolerate him when it comes to this kind of conversation. "I'm just kidding, Solanna," he said, which made me roll my eyes and push his motorcycle to show him that I was excited to lose him. "Don't be excited, I'm leaving too!" "Don't come back, and don't you ever text me!" I hissed. He just laughed at me. It's a good thing that he didn't argue with me anymore. I let him take a deep breath before he put on his helmet and drove away on the motorcycle he was using. I stared at his motorcycle until it completely disappeared on the highway. I take a deep breath while telling myself to do everything just to prove myself here. I'll take advantage of this opportunity to save for tuition next year if I have the opportunity to study again. I want to graduate because, just like what my mother said last time, education is the only thing she can pass on to us. I told them that I would give them a good life, and in order to achieve that success, I should start to work hard and put aside the speculations that have been running in my mind ever since. Spencer fired that girl, so there's a possibility that they'll make my life suffer while I'm still working with them. He even told me that they would all bully me because the girl he fired was their friend. Yes, I felt a bit terrified, but what else could I do? I'm here. If there's a chance that they'll bully me and make my life suffer while working with them, then I should fight back. My parents didn't want me to be involved in any fight, but if they insist on letting myself suffer, then I'm more than willing to fight for myself. What is strength for if I don’t use it? I shifted in my stance before I stretched my lips for a smile. I carried the pack of courage and determination as I allowed myself to step on the doormat of the coffee shop owned by Spencer’s family. As soon as I stepped inside, I saw the employees turning to look in my direction. I saw how their genuine smile slowly faded away when they saw me looking at them. Some of them looked annoyed when they saw me, and it seems like I already know the reason why they are mad at me now. "Oh, there she is," I heard someone say, before I heard their laughter. No one welcomed me, and I looked forward to that thing. After they make fun of me, they move on to their work with their gossip. It seems like they didn't see anyone enter the coffee shop, and it looks like they don't have any care now that I'm here in front of them. I'm not expecting them to greet me or welcome me, but how do I start my first work if this is the beginning I'm going to experience? I don’t know what Mayden’s appearance was that he referred to me earlier. Because of so much annoyance with him, it never entered my mind to ask him about Mayden's physical appearance. I don't have any idea who he is referring to. Based on what he said a while ago and the way he described the Mayden he was referring to, it seems like Mayden is in a high position in this cafe. If I'm not mistaken, she's one of the managers he referred to. I don't want his employees to think that I'm here to stare and watch their work. I'm here to work. Just like them, I'm here to earn and save for myself, so why should I even think about them? I'm used to being an introvert. I've never met other people, somehow I won't have a hard time working with them because I don't have friends. Yes, my parents told me that I needed to learn how to get along, but how can I do that if this is their first impression of me? "Will you just stand there?" someone asked, which made me secretly purse my lips. "You are here to work." "I-I don't know what I'm going to do first." "Why don't you ask Cristy?" someone said before I heard them laugh at me. "Oh! I almost forgot. Spencer fired her just because of you." "It's a bad thing. Cristy was the one who held the trainees back then," someone said, before I heard them chuckle a bit. "We don't know who will train you now that Cristy is already gone." It seems like I can already smell that my life will be miserable while I am here. "Spencer told me that Mayden was the one who—" "Are you two friends?" someone asked, curiously, which made me slowly nod at her. "Oh! Maybe that's the reason why you quickly got into their business." "You were accepted here just because you two are friends." "That's unfair though!" The girl my age crossed her arms and sarcastically turned to look at me from head to toe. "What was your secret and why does it look like Spencer is so mad at you? Did you charm him?" "W-We're not a thing—" "That's enough." Even before I could speak, someone approached my side. I couldn't help but bite my tongue and turned to look at my side where it was. Some of the employees lowered their heads, while I, on the other hand, managed to turn to the woman next to me. I saw her looking at the employees, mocking my relationship with Spencer. It seemed like their tails and courage receded when they saw the woman standing on my side. "As you said before, you're here to work. Fix your clutter and do your work," she said before she slowly turned to look at me. "I'm Mayden Ticson, and I'm the one assigned to train you. Follow me," she said before she turned her back on me. I heard some of the employees gossiping about me, but instead of listening to them, I decided to follow the office where Mayden entered. Should I just call her Ma'am Mayden or Mayden? I saw her sitting in her office chair. I saw her nameplate and her full name was on it. Before I sat down at the vacant seat she had indicated earlier, I secretly swallowed the lumpy lump in my throat. "I'm sorry for what they did a while ago. Maybe until now, they still can't accept what happened to Cristy," she said. I lowered my head while playing with my thumbs. "I didn't know Spencer fired their friend. I told him not to fire her. I just found out now that he actually fired her." "It's not your fault, hija," she said, which made me look at her. She smiled genuinely at me before she nodded her head. "Cristy has a history of stealing from the cash register, and I know that Spencer didn't fire her just because of what she said yesterday. I know Spencer owns the CCTVs, so I had a feeling Spencer already knew Cristy stole some money. He just used what happened yesterday to fire Cristy." If that's the case then, why didn't he fire Cristy right away before I even came here yesterday? Mayden smiled at me when she noticed my reaction. "He can't fire someone just because of what he saw, hija. He has to gather enough evidence before he can make a decision." Our discussion about Spencer lasted a while. If I hadn't reminded her that I was here for my first day, she wouldn't let me go. Just like I'd expected, Mayden was the one who decided to train me, just like Spencer told her to do. She was the one who taught me everything I need to learn. I easily learned how to brew coffee, so even if she doesn’t train me tomorrow, I will be able to do everything. Some of the employees who hate Cristy approached me, while some of them just ignored me. "It's a good thing that that woman was fired," Julianne said before she jokingly elbowed my waist, which made me smile a bit. "That girl is annoying. My blood has been boiling for her for a long time. She was the reason why I almost got fired from my job. Joy, one of the waitresses, said, "I still remember how she pointed at you when someone stole thirty thousand in the cash register," which made me look at her. She smiled genuinely at me and added, "The CCTV record caught her taking small amounts of money from the cash register that time. I was just wondering why she wasn't fired that time even though she didn't return the money she stole." "I'm really grateful to you, because if it weren't for you, maybe until now, my life would have turned into a hell while I was working here with her," Julianne said before she smiled at me. I thought my first day here at the cafe would be hell. It seems like my first day wasn't that bad, and that's because of Mayden and my coworkers, Julianne and Joy. Even though my first day didn't go as planned, at least someone was willing to listen to my explanations.
