Spencer is the most annoying person I've ever known in my entire life. We’ve been friends for almost ten years, and he was the reason my old friends broke their friendship with me. Whenever someone approached me, he was the one who would talk to them until one day, the person who wanted to be friends with me suddenly disappeared.
I don't know if he's doing anything else. Maybe he was trying to threaten that person or he was saying foul words to them. Sometimes, I want to confront him, but it seems like my confrontation can't do anything.
Spencer Esreel Cabasan seemed to be my best friend. He always annoys me, but it never got to the point where we had tantrums and resentment towards each other. Yes, sometimes we don't talk that much because we are busy with what we are doing.
Spencer was always there whenever I needed him. He always listens to me whenever I have problems. He was always there whenever I had my rants. He always listens to me whenever I tell a story. He never turned his back on me whenever I needed help, and it seems like he was the reason I was brave. Yes, he's always with me at all times, but it seems like we can't always be together.
I don't like him, and it seems like he feels the same way. Yes, he always teases me whenever someone criticizes our relationship, and I'm glad he never got to the point where he admitted that he likes me.
Just like I'd said, I don't like him and he doesn't fit my standards. He named me as one of his exes back then, which made us separate for almost a week. He never called me ex after that fight. He respects my decision even though he is constantly teasing me. At least somehow, he knew when to distance himself.
I saw him walking towards my direction with a furrowed brow. He looked annoyed based on his facial expression, and when he noticed that I was looking at him, he couldn't do anything but smile at me. He placed some papers in front of me before he sat in the vacant seat.
"You're hired, Solanna."
My eyes widened a bit because of what he said. I asked, "What?" curiously while looking at him. "This isn't the interview I expected, Spencer!"
"Yeah, I know. I'm just helping you."
My stares at him gradually sharpened. He continued to chuckle while looking at my reaction, and when he saw that I wasn't laughing with him, he did nothing but shook his head and faked a cough.
"What do you expect in my interview with you today?"
I pursed my lips before I leaned back in my seat. "The usual, Spencer. Describe yourself first before you start asking too many questions."
"Then, describe yourself, Solanna."
I didn't expect that what we were doing now seemed to be embarrassing for me. He looked uninterested based on his looks, while I, on the other hand, felt very nervous while looking at him. He looked annoyed earlier when he entered the office where I was, but when he saw me looking at him, his facial expression suddenly changed. From being annoyed and irritated to being friendly and uninterested at the same time.
"I'm Solanna Anastacia Javier. 19 years of age. I am able to handle multiple tasks. I am energetic and eager to learn new things," I said, making his lips twitch a bit.
"Then you're hired, Miss Javier."
My eyes narrowed a bit because of what he said. If I have the right to pull the collar of his shirt, I will. I know that it won't be appropriate for me to cut his throat right now, so even though I'm embarrassed by his words, I decided to restrain myself while looking at him.
I smiled a bit without any humor. I said, "This is not the job interview process, Spencer!"
"I have my right to pass you on your interview and the answer I heard from you is already enough for me, Solanna," he said before he smiled evilly. I couldn't help but roll my eyes, especially when I saw that he was ready to argue with me about what I would say if ever. "You need to start tomorrow. I'll take care of your other paperwork. I'll also take care of your tax forms. We're urgently hiring now, so even if you don't submit medical papers, there will be no problem."
"But..."
"I was just trying to help you, and this is the only help I can do for you," he said before he leaned closer to the table where we were sitting. He smiled genuinely at me, which made my face redden a bit. "Think about the benefits you will receive while you're working with our family. If the minimum wage you will receive is not enough for you, just tell me. I'm willing to double it for you."
"Spencer, it seems like I can't accept your offer..."
His brow furrowed a bit because of what I'd said. "Do you want me to triple your—"
"I don't want this kind of offer. What you're saying isn't right."
He chuckled because of what I'd said, so I couldn't help but purse my lips and roll my eyes while still looking at him.
The audacity of him to laugh at me!
"You told me that you wanted to study, Solanna. I was just trying to help you."
I shook my head and smiled a bit to show him that he was wrong. He's doing it wrong. Yes, what he offered me is a big help for me, but didn't he know the effect of his offer on his family's business?
In business, every cent is a big deal. Not because we're friends doesn't mean he would favor me. I don't want him to consider me special just because we're friends. We are constantly working for our family, and it seems like the things he's doing right now also have a negative outcome for me.
What if an employee thinks there is something going on between the two of us? What if they treat me wrong?
Yes, I dream of success, but it doesn't mean that I need to grab the opportunities he offers, even though I know that it's not right.
"The help you offered to me was a bit..."
He stood up from his seat, making me bite my own tongue to restrain myself from complaining. He doesn't look annoyed, but I already know that he doesn't want me to reject him. It seems like this discussion won't end because I don't agree with what he wants to happen.
"I want you to work tomorrow morning. At 8:30 in the morning, you should be here. "I'll give you the key, and my manager will train you," he said, as if it were his final decision. When I saw how firm he was in his decision, I pursed my lips. "My parents allowed me to interview you today, and I told them last night that even if I don't interview you, I will still accept you, Solanna."
"But..."
"I guessed this would end our discussion," he said before he turned to look at his wristwatch. He smiled a bit before he turned to look at me once again. "I do have a lot of errands today. I can't take you outside for now. My friends were waiting for me in court."
I rolled my eyes because of what he said. "When will you stop playing basketball with your friends? Don't you have any hobbies aside from basketball?"
"There's more," he said playfully, which made my brows raise a bit. "I could steal the ball from the opponent." He burst into laughter when he saw how my eyes narrowed a bit because of what he said.
Just like what he said, that's where our discussion ended. When I decided to leave his office, I saw the bartender he scolded earlier. Some of his waitresses turned to look in my direction when they saw me come out of Spencer's office.
Some of them looked annoyed while looking at me. Based on their stares, it seems like I did something wrong to them. The girl Spencer scolded earlier looked annoyed. Unlike before, she was no longer wearing the apron she was wearing before, so I couldn't help but feel confused.
She hissed. "I can't believe that Sir can scold me just because of her!"
Even though they don’t mention a name, it seems like I already know who they’re referring to. I was the only one with Spencer before, and I witnessed how Spencer defended me from her.
Does Spencer fire her just like he said a while ago?
"Don't worry, Cristy. He might have a strong attachment to him," someone said before they turned to look at me.
I felt my face redden a bit because of what they said. Instead of confronting them, I decided to exit the coffee shop and not to turn to look in the direction where they were. I don't want to engage myself in a senseless fight because my parents told us that when someone takes advantage of you, you don't have to fight back.
Karma is the best revenge, so why would I waste my time fighting them? I should ignore them just like I always did when I was young.
I was a victim of bullying when I was in elementary. They hurt me physically and emotionally, verbal and non-verbal. My parents were always at the guidance office back then because my teachers always reported me. I'm not the cause of trouble; I'm the victim.
But then, even though I suffered a lot of physical a***e when I was a child, it never crossed my mind to retaliate against everyone who hurt me. Karma was always there for me. I let karma itself retaliate against them.
They will never understand the damage they have done to someone until the same damage is done to them. Karma has a surprising way of taking some situations. Not for being a sadist, but I love seeing the people who bullied me back then who are now suffering.
I felt my lips twitching a bit because of what I had thought. Due to my lack of awareness around me, I was no longer aware of the car approaching in my direction. I hurriedly closed my eyes and waited for it to approach me.
My life seemed to be an unfortunate one. Even though I haven't found a job yet, it looks like God will take me right away.
Lord, if you ever hear me now, please let me live my life first. I want my parents to feel comfortable. How can I make them feel the comfort of life if you pick me up right away?
I quickly opened my eyes when I heard the loud horn from the car in front of me. I saw the car stop one foot away from me. I don't even remember how many minutes I closed my eyes from where I was standing.
I slowly looked at my hands, and I wanted to burst into laughter when I saw my own skin that was now pale. Was I still alive until now?
The driver in front blew his horn again, which made me bow my head in apology and stay out of the road. I thought he was leaving now that I was no longer in the middle of the highway, but my eyes narrowed a bit when he turned his car to the side and got out of the driver's seat.
"What is he up to?" I asked myself while looking at the man who was now standing in front of me.
He slowly removed his shades before his serious gaze turned to look at me. I couldn't help but marvel at his style now. If I hadn’t been at fault earlier, I might have fallen for him.
He bit his lower lip before he brushed his messy hair using his own fingers.
"Did I hurt you?" he asked.
Wow. Is this even real?
"I-I'm okay," I said, before I averted my gaze from him.
Seeing his eyes made me weak a bit. There is something strange in his eyes that is really mesmerizing if you look at it. I don't know if the way he asked the question was sarcastic, but if I understood correctly, it seems like he was worried about whether he really hurt me or not.
Based on his look, it looks like his eyes are clear enough to see me walking in the pedestrian lane. So why would he even ask? I know that he already knew that he didn't run over me, so why does he have to ask me?
Does he have double vision?
"Sorry, this is my first time driving a car," he said before he chuckled. My eyes widen a fraction when he stretches his hand in front of me. "I'm Blake."
"S-Solanna," I replied.
I don't know if it's appropriate that I accept his hand. He almost ran over me, but instead of fighting me, he even managed to introduce himself. I almost wrote a script in my mind on how to run away if I ever scratched his car.
Based on his car, it seems like it's just new and I'll spend a lot if it ever had blood stains just because of my negligence. I didn't even know where I would find the money to pay him and for the expenses for his new car.
It seemed like he already knew that I had no intention of accepting his hand, so I wasn't surprised when he lowered his hand while scratching his head.
"Are you sure you're okay? Did I hurt you?"
"No," I hurriedly said while shaking my head. I felt my face reddening a bit, so before he could even notice it, I turned my back on him and walked away.
I heard him repeatedly calling my name, but instead of turning to him, I decided to hurry my walk and kept my back while walking away from him. I don't know him, so I won't lose anything if I just ignore him.
Just as I expected, I informed my family that I got the job. They were all excited about the path I chose, and my parents assured me that no matter what happened, they would always be there for me.
That's the best thing I want to receive from them; they support me in all my decisions.
