CHAPTER FIVE

If you want a better life, you should start to work hard. In order to get the things that you want, you need to stay positive and put in hard work all the way through. This will allow you to fulfill and achieve the things you want. I am a great believer in luck. I mean, who doesn’t believe in luck? But then, not at all times, everything will go by luck. There are opportunities that require hard work before you can achieve it all, and the opportunities I am referring to will never pass by luck. Your luck depends on your hard work. The harder you work, the more luck you get. If you believe in luck but you do not pour passion into the work you have, then how can you say that luck will approach you? Luck is simply based on how you pour your passion into something else. If you were lazy and didn't know how to grab an opportunity, then why do you still believe in luck? I told my parents that I wanted to find a job, and just as I expected, they allowed me to do what I wanted to happen. My younger sister kept on asking me where I would find a job. She even told me that she would accompany me in finding one, but my mom prevented her from doing what she wanted to happen. "You're too young to work, Monique," she said, which made my sister purse her lips and no longer reply to her. "You have to finish senior high first." "It will take me a few more years before I step into senior high, Mom," she said. My mother didn't bother turning to look at her when she said something. She continued to scoop the rice out of the pot. My father was busy reading his newspaper, while my younger brother was busy continuing to listen to their discussion. It seems like earlier, mom was still talking to me, but when Monique intervened in our discussion, it seemed like our discussion earlier regarding my plans for tomorrow had been completely forgotten. I told them that starting tomorrow I would be looking for a new job in town. My childhood friend, Spencer, suggested their coffee shop, but there's nothing wrong if I look for something else that can fit my educational background, right? Spencer's parents already knew me, and when I said I would apply to their business, I was sure they would hire me right away. I didn't want to show other employees that I was only hired because I was a friend of their son. Of course, I want them to know me for my passion and work, not just because I'm a friend of their employer's son. "You should finish senior high first before you bother yourself with finding a job, Monique. Your dad and I aren't always here. We don't have the time," my mother said. Monique couldn't do anything but purse her lips while listening to our mom. "Education is the only thing we can pass on to your siblings. So, I hope you understand my point." Monique no longer spoke. It seemed like she already understood the point of our mom. The discussion didn't last long either, and it seemed like our dad was just trying to change the topic. Mom looked serious while taking her lunch and while listening to our dad's story. Monique didn't say anything, and it seems like she has nothing more to say. Monique has this habit of knowing when she's in the wrong, she will no longer fight her point. What is the point if you fight for your opinion and you are the only one who is on the wrong side? "It looks like Henrietta's eldest son is coming home," my father said. I felt my brows furrow a bit because of what he said. My siblings looked confused too. It seems like this is the first time I have heard that name. Who the hell was that? "Who is she, dad?" I asked curiously. Monique and Marco turned to look at me before they both turned to our dad. My mom shifted in her seat and decided to lean her back against the chair she was sitting on. My mom said, "Actually, she sent me a letter two days ago." Based on what she said, it seems like I already have an idea of who she was referring to. The woman who sent her a letter two days ago requesting for her to work for her family is the Henrietta they refer to. Because of what I had thought, I slowly nodded my head. My siblings looked curious while looking at our parents. It seems like only the three of us know who the persona of that woman is. "Why?" my father asked. He turned to look at the newspaper he was holding, and it seemed like that newspaper contained the reason why he had found out about that Henrietta. "Does she need anything?" He continued to read the newspaper he was holding. "Based on the article posted here, they will bring their eldest son back here in the Philippines to manage their company. It appears that their first-born has already had the courage to carry on what their family began." "Why? Does the article state that their first-born has already learned how to be a well-mannered man?" my mom asked curiously. I felt my brows furrowed a bit because of their conversation. First-born, huh? "Maybe," my father said before he chuckled a bit. "What does Shaun's return have to do with the letter she sent to you?" "Henrietta was just asking me if I could serve her eldest son when he returned to the Philippines," she said before she shrugged and continued with her dinner. "I was the one who took care of Shaun when he was young, so I'm sure she was just asking for my help because Shaun told her so." "I don't have any idea that you've been a babysitter before, mom." Marco asked curiously, which made her chuckle a bit. "Shaun was already a teen when I took care of him and his siblings," she said before she turned to look at me and smiled a bit. "It's been twenty years since I last saw him. I wonder what he looks like now and what he's doing now." "Maybe he's married now," my father said, which made me purse my lips. "Henrietta and Samuel are already old. They need a grandchild to take good care of them." "Maybe I'll just ask him if I'll ever have a chance to accept her offer. It's been twenty years since I last saw him and his family." I don't want to interfere with their conversation, but I can't help but to ask something. "Are you friends with Henrietta, mom?" "We're just acquatance, Solanna," she said, almost in a whisper, before she shrugged and smiled a bit while looking at her plate. "We know each other, but we're not that close enough for me to say that she's one of my friends." My brow furrowed again out of confusion. "If you're not friends with her, then why is she requesting you?" My father said, "Maybe because Shaun missed her a lot," before he laughed a bit. I secretly rolled my eyes and just continued with my dinner. My parents continued their conversation until our dinner ended. Marco entered the room earlier than me, while Monique was still busy with her paper work. I am the one who always washes the dishes, so even if I have an errand tomorrow, I have no choice but to wash them again. "I'm almost done with my school papers, Solanna," Monique said before I felt her approach my side. "I'll take care of that. You should rest." I turned to look at her and smiled a bit before I pinched her cheek. Her brows furrowed because of what I did, so I was no longer surprised when she gently pushed me away from the kitchen sink and repeatedly cursed me for what I did. I slept early that night. I texted Spencer that I would stop by at their coffee shop tomorrow to hand him my papers, but even before I could close my eyes, he replied to my text message. Even before I opened his message, my cellphone rang for a call. Even though I was already feeling drowsy, I decided to answer his call. I know that he will get upset if I drop his call. "So, you're planning to apply to the coffee shop?" he asked. His voice was a bit strained, and I don't know why his voice was strained. "I will tell my parents that they should conduct an interview for tomorrow, so you can start right away." "Don't tell them I'm going to apply, Spencer," I hissed, which made him chuckle a bit. "I don't want other people to think I got in just because of your help." "Why? Are you shy, Anastacia?" "I'm not!" I hissed, which made his chuckle turn into a laugh. "That's unfair! I also want to experience passing through the needle's hole. I don't need your help. I don't want your employees to think that your family has their own favoritism." I heard him clap on the other line, so I couldn't help but be insulted by his mockery of what I said. "Then that's good, but I'm sorry..." he said, which made me close my eyes while waiting for his next lines. "My parents already knew that you would apply to them. They are listening to our conversation now." "Why would I believe you, Spencer?" I asked, which made him chuckle a bit. I heard some loud music in the background of our call, and I'm sure he wasn't in their house. And, his parents were out on a business trip, so why would I believe him? Knowing him, he loves to tell lies and knows nothing but to keep them a secret from me. "Who's that, Spencer?" I heard a girl's voice on the other line. I heard Spencer burst into laughter because of her question, and I wasn't surprised when he replied, "She's my girlfriend," which made my brows shut a bit. "Goodnight, dimwit," I replied before I cut his call. I know that he was already laughing on the other line when he noticed that I was no longer on the line. I couldn't help but raise my brows and repeatedly roll my eyes because of so much annoyance. I didn’t even realize a smile was slowly registering on my lips that I almost suppressed. I don't like him, and we're just friends. Maybe I was just feeling these kinds of feelings because he was the only friend of mine who stayed with me. Maybe I felt this way because he's a man and I'm a girl. I know that it's normal to feel this way because Spencer and I are rarely together. Yes, he always called me every night, but he never made me feel like he wanted anything. Maybe he's the most annoying person I've met in my whole life, but even though he has this attitude and he annoys me more often than I talk to him, I treasured him a lot, as much as I treasure my siblings. He repeatedly teases me every time he gets a chance, but I’m sure that even though he repeatedly annoys me whenever he gets a chance, I know that’s just part of his tenderness. I was just an assuming person, and I hate this kind of personality. I turned on my alarm clock at exactly 4:30 in the morning. My mom was busy arranging her goods when I decided to head to the kitchen. I saw her busy arranging her goods, and when she noticed my presence in front of her, she slowly turned to look at me and smiled a bit. "You're too early, Solanna. Why don't you sleep first?" she asked before she looked at her basket and proceeded to arrange the goods. "I was planning to go early to their coffee shop," I said. I let her do what she was doing, and instead of disturbing her, I decided to head to the cabinet to find a cup and spoon. I noticed that she didn't move because of what I'd said, so I decided to turn to look at her to ask some questions. I saw her looking at me with a smile etched on her lips. I couldn't help but feel annoyed because it seemed like I already knew what was on her mind right now. "Is your friend trying to court you?" I'm right! "He was just trying to help me, mom," I said, before I turned my back on her to cover my reddened face. It's too early for her teases. She herself said that it was too early! "I was just kidding," she said, but I sense that until now she's been annoying me. I didn't speak anymore, so she continued what she was doing. "In case you are not hired or there is no vacant position in their cafe, I would like to introduce you to Henrietta," she said, making my brows shot before I turned to look at her once again. She smiled at me when she noticed that I was done preparing my coffee. I let myself slide into the vacant seat in front of her. "Why?" I asked curiously. She smiled genuinely at me, so I couldn't help but feel curious. Is she scheming something? Is she trying to... "I rejected her offer because I have my work, and I can't afford to leave your siblings. Last night, I replied to her emails, and I told her that I would send you instead of me," she said, which made me furrow my brows in confusion. "That's if you're not hired at the cafe you're referring to." "Spencer himself told me there were a lot of vacant positions," I said before I shrugged at her. "I don't want to be a maid in their family, Mom. If she's your friend, then I'm willing, but you yourself told us last night that you know each other but you two weren't close enough for you to call her your friend." I playfully stir the coffee in my mug. "So, I'm not interested." "She's offering a big salary, Solanna," she said, which made me shrug because I wanted to. "If you take their offer, they are willing to help you get your education in college. You don't have to save money for your tuition fees because they are the ones who will pay for them. " My eyes widened a bit because of what she said. She smiled at me when she noticed that I seemed interested in what she was saying. I don’t know why, but it seems like college has become my weakness when it comes to this kind of conversation. "I... I'll think about that," I said, almost a whisper, which made her smile and nod at me. Because of what she told me, it seems like I've lost my appetite to look for a job in town. What my mother said made me change my mind. Our conversation that time didn’t end when I shrugged. She offered a lot, and it made me a bit hesitant. She told me that there were many requirements that I should meet when I was hired at the cafe. She even told me that if I accept Henrietta's offer, I won't have to meet any requirements. If I accept her offer, then I don't have to look for another job because I'm already hired. I don’t have to start at the beginning because everything is already served to me. I felt my lips pursed a bit because of what I had thought. I didn't even realize that Spencer was in front of me and I was just waiting for him to enter the cafe owned by his parents. I was wearing my old checkered polo shirt. Some people were staring at my old blouse. Based on my attire, it looks like I'm going to a farm, and I'm not here for an interview. Some people mocked my clothes, and some of them also laughed at me. They thought that I was on a farm, and I didn't fit in this kind of place. "Sir, good morning!" Some of his employees greeted him with a smile before their smiles slowly faded when they looked at me. "Has someone complained about her?" Spencer's eyes narrowed a bit because of what his employee asked. I felt my head lowered a bit because of what his employee said. Do I look like I did something wrong to one of his customers? "She's here for an interview. Do you have problems with that?" Spencer asked, which made her head bob a bit because of embarrassment. "If you have problems with my friend, feel free to leave our cafe." His employee couldn't speak either, especially when Spencer held my hand and pulled me away from that place. I could do nothing but bite my lower lip to restrain myself from complaining to him. I want to confront him, but it seems like it won't be good, especially now that he looks irritated, unlike before when he waited for me outside. "Her attitude will be the cause of our business's downfall," he said, out of nowhere. I could do nothing but turn to look at him. His serious expression was already on his face, and I couldn't seem to get rid of his annoyance. "I should fire her." "That's not appropriate, Spencer..." "That is," he said before he motioned for me to sit in one of the vacant seats in his parents' office. "My parents weren't here, so I'll be the one who will interview you, Solanna. Don't worry, because I won't make you suffer." He winked at me, which made me roll my eyes. He looked at his wristwatch before he crossed his arms. "Wait for me here. I'll just do something outside." "Don't tell me..." He chuckled when he saw me stand up in my chair. "Don't worry because I have nothing else to do. Just stay here. I will just check the management and fire someone." "Spencer!" He shook his head before bursting into laughter. "I'm not doing anything, okay?" He raised his hand as if he was already surrendering to me. "I will just check something outside. Wait for me here!" I couldn't ask him because he was in a hurry to leave the office. I could only sigh heavily and lean heavily against my chair to try to rest my back. It seems like I know what will happen in the next few days.
