I built the accounts that kept the Moretti mafia alive. Luca got the title of Don. I became his wife and the one person he could never afford to lose. Then he brought Elena home and put my highest security clearance around her neck. Tonight, I log into the Moretti mainframe for the last time. Luca can keep his title, his new favorite, and the family name. When I leave, he will have the ashes.

Chapter 1 The Weight of the Crown
Luca lifted the Obsidian Crown from his neck and fastened it around Elena's. The name made it sound ceremonial. In truth, it was a volcanic-glass pendant containing the master key to our deepest vaults and a panic button linked to Luca's personal guard. For seven years, only Luca and I had carried that level of access. One press on the pendant could lock the estate and bring his personal guard to the wearer's location. Its key could open accounts that most of the family did not know existed. Luca had never lent it to anyone. Elena stood beneath the foyer chandelier with wet eyes and shaking hands. She kept one fist closed around the pendant while she looked up at my husband. “She needs to feel safe, Aurora.” Luca adjusted the chain at the back of her neck. “It’s temporary. Once we know who was after her, I’ll take it back.” He led her toward the private elevator. Years ago, a rival family had cornered me in the main hall. Luca had installed that elevator afterward so I could reach our private wing without crossing the public floors. Now Elena stepped inside it. As the bronze doors closed, she looked over Luca's shoulder. Her mouth tipped up. By the time he turned, she had pressed her face against his chest again. He returned alone and put his hands on my waist. Her sweet perfume had settled into his jacket. “I know today was difficult.” He kissed my temple. “She’s been through hell. Give her some time.” He studied my face while he spoke, patient and certain that I would make this easy for him. For years, every crisis had ended with me cleaning the accounts, calming the captains, and standing beside him at dinner. My palm covered the small curve of my stomach. I had planned to tell him in three days, at our fifth anniversary party. The doctor had already called the pregnancy high-risk and warned me about stress. Luca kept talking while I watched the Obsidian Crown disappear upstairs. In his mind, I had slipped from wife to asset. Reliable assets did their work, survived every insult, and waited for the next order. “Elena thinks you hate her,” he said. “I don’t.” He took my answer for surrender. “That’s my Aurora. Always the strongest one in the room.” He kissed me. I kept my hands at my sides until he let go. Later, I locked myself in my study. The Moretti ledgers lived there, behind firewalls I had written and accounts no one else knew how to open. Luca supplied the blood. I made the money look clean. Every shell company and encrypted account carried my work. The family called Luca brilliant whenever money moved where he wanted it. He accepted the praise. I stayed in this room, routing the accounts and making his victories look legal. I signed in and opened the backdoor I had built on our wedding night. Luca had called it paranoia. I had called it insurance. The transfer included the core data, access codes, and liquid assets. It led through a network registered to no Moretti and controlled entirely by me. The progress bar began to move. I needed three days. On our fifth anniversary, Luca would fill the house with guests. He would raise a glass to five years of marriage and another year as Don. Upstairs, the servers would finish emptying his empire into my hands.
