Ashes and betrayal.
BITTER HEART “Amazing, huh?” Eddie Webling muttered, leaning against the cracked house wall, his voice dripping with nostalgia. “Ten years ago you were chasing Eleanor, and now look at you — a family man with a beautiful wife and kids.” Sean’s eyes dropped to the ground, his shoulders heavy with worry. “Yeah, but look at the state we’re living in. This isn’t the life I promised Ellie. I need money, Eddie. Real money. I can’t keep watching her sacrifice everything.” Eddie’s grin was sly, almost predatory. “There’s a job. Big cash involved. If you’re in.” Sean forced a smile, though unease gnawed at him. “What kind of job? Right now, I’d do anything.” “Are you sure?” Eddie asked, his tone sharp, testing Sean’s resolve. That night, Sean lay awake, staring at the cracked ceiling of their small home. He remembered the early days with Eleanor — the laughter, the freaks of building a life together. Back then, even poverty felt lighter because they had hope. But now, with Gabriela and their son growing older, the weight of broken promises pressed harder. The next morning, Sean walked through the narrow streets of their neighborhood. Rusted tin roofs glistened under the sun, children played barefoot in the dust, and Eleanor’s tired face lingered in his mind. She had been strong for years, holding the family together with scraps of hope, but Sean knew her patience was wearing thin. When Eddie led him to Raphael Cartos’ warehouse, Sean felt the weight of every step. The air smelled of oil and dust, shadows stretching across the concrete floor. He thought it was just another delivery gig, but soon realized the truth — drugs. His stomach twisted. “I can’t do this,” Sean protested, his voice trembling. “I’ve got a family.” Raphael’s cold stare cut through him like a blade. “You walk away, your family pays the price.” That evening, Sean forced a smile at dinner, masking the storm inside him. “Gabby, Daddy’s got a job now. You’ll be able to go to school.” “Really, Daddy?” Gabriela’s eyes lit up, her innocence a cruel reminder of the path he was walking. Eleanor, however, wasn’t fooled. Later, when Gabby was asleep, she confronted him. “Sean, this isn’t right. Report them to the police.” “I can’t,” Sean whispered, his voice breaking. “They threatened us. I won’t risk losing you. You’re all I have.” Days passed, and Sean’s life became a blur of fear and secrecy. Each time he drove the truck, his hands trembled on the steering wheel. He thought of Eleanor’s warnings, his kids smile, and the promise he had once made to protect them. A week later, while transporting a shipment. The flashing lights of the police checkpoint blinded Sean as he gripped the steering wheel. His heart hammered, sweat dripping down his temple. He tried to stay calm, but the officers’ voices were sharp, commanding. Within minutes, the truck was searched, the drugs discovered, and Sean was dragged out in handcuffs. “Please,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “I have a family.”But his words fell into the night, unheard. Back at the warehouse, Eddie delivered the news with a nervous edge. “Boss, Sean was caught.” Raphael’s jaw tightened, his voice low and dangerous. “Has he said anything?” "Not yet," Eddie replied with fear written all over his face. Days turned into weeks behind the cold bars of the prison. Sean’s cell was damp, the air heavy with despair. He thought of Eleanor’s tired smile, Gabriela’s laughter, and Benjamin’s tiny hands. Each memory was a knife twisting deeper into his chest. Raphael, however, feared Sean’s silence would not last. “If he talks,” Raphael told Eddie, “everything collapses. He must be silenced.”And so, Raphael sent a man into the prison. It was late, the corridors quiet except for the distant clang of metal doors. Sean sat on his bunk, whispering prayers into the darkness. He dreamed of freedom, of holding Eleanor again. The cell door creaked open. A shadow slipped inside. Sean looked up, confusion flickering across his face. “Raphael sends his regards,” the man muttered. Before Sean could speak, a blade flashed. Pain ripped through him, his cry muffled by the killer’s hand. He fought, desperate, but the struggle was short. His body collapsed, lifeless, onto the cold concrete floor. The guard on duty looked the other way. The silence of corruption swallowed the truth. News of Sean’s death spread quickly. Official reports claimed he had been attacked by another inmate during a fight. But Eleanor knew better. Days later, Sean was buried, leaving Eleanor shattered and Gabriela and little Benjamin fatherless. Her grief turned fury. Every morning Eleanor dressed in black and walked to Raphael’s office. Her footsteps echoed through the marble halls, her voice sharp and unrelenting. “You killed my husband!” she shouted, her words cutting through the silence. “You destroyed my family, Raphael. You’ll pay for this!” At first, Raphael ignored her, sipping his whiskey and pretending she was nothing more than a grieving widow. But Eleanor returned the next day, and the day after that, her curses louder, her grief sharper. She stood outside his gates, calling him a murderer in front of his men. She stormed into his office, slamming her fists on his desk. “You think you’re untouchable? You think your money hides your sins? Sean’s blood is on your hands!” Neighbors began to whisper about her defiance. Some admired her courage, others feared Raphael’s wrath. But Eleanor didn’t care. Her pain had turned into fury, and she carried it like a weapon. Raphael’s patience wore thin. Each day her voice chipped away at his pride, each curse a reminder that his control wasn’t absolute. His men grew restless, embarrassed by her public accusations. Finally, Raphael’s cold mask cracked. “Enough,” he growled to Eddie. “She will learn silence. Burn her house. Make it look like an accident. I don’t want her voice haunting me anymore.” Eddie hesitated, guilt gnawing at him, but Raphael’s command was absolute. And so the plan was set — the fire that would consume Eleanor’s home, and nearly her children too. The night was heavy with silence, broken only by the distant hum of crickets. Inside the small house, Eleanor slept lightly, her mind restless with grief. Gabriela and Benjamin lay curled beside her, their breaths soft and innocent. Then came the crackle. At first faint, like twigs snapping in the wind. But soon the sound grew louder, accompanied by the acrid scent of smoke. Eleanor’s eyes flew open. Flames licked the walls, shadows danced violently across the room. “Gabby! Benji!” she cried, shaking them awake. Panic surged through her veins as she scooped Benjamin into her arms and pulled Gabriela close. The heat pressed against their skin, suffocating, relentless. They stumbled toward the back door, coughing, eyes stinging. Just as they reached the threshold, a voice pierced the night. “They’re alive!” the shout tore through the night, echoing like a death sentence.Eleanor’s heart froze. She clutched Benjamin tighter, pulling Gabriela by the hand as they stumbled into the woods. Branches whipped against their faces, the ground uneven beneath their feet. Behind them, heavy boots pounded the earth, voices rising in pursuit.“Don’t let them get away!” one of the men barked. The forest seemed endless, shadows twisting into monstrous shapes. Eleanor’s breath came ragged, her leg burning with every step. Gabriela cried, “Mummy, I’m scared!” “I know, baby,” Eleanor gasped, “but you have to run. Don’t stop.”A gunshot cracked the silence. Eleanor screamed as pain ripped through her leg, sending her crashing to the ground. The children froze, sobbing.
