Midnight Ranch
I woke up to an abnormally loud clash of thunder that rattled, and shook the whole house. It was immediately followed by a bright flash of lightning that lasted what seemed like forever. I sat straight up in my bed naked, panting and soaked in sweat completely expecting a ln attack. I looked around my room ready for a fight. The men in my past still haunt my dreams. For a moment I thought they had found me again. then another loud thunder crack brought me to my feet as I realized it was only a thunderstorm.
I glanced at the clock as I put on my warm, soft and fuzzy matching bathrobe and slippers. It was only three in the morning but I knew I wasn't going back to bed so I headed for my shower. I wanted to wash the sticky oily sweat off of my Carmel tanned skin. I turned on the shower to let it heat up as I returned to the master bedroom of my farmhouse to find clothes for today. In no time at all I picked out my favorite shirt and a parr of jeans and headed back to the shower. The bathroom was already hot and steamy. I set my clothes down on the counter as I took off my slippers then I hung up my bathrobe and climbed in the shower.
The hot water felt amazing as it slowly soaked through my thick, long, wavy, dark brown hair, before finally penetrating through it and flowing down my back causing a tingling sensation that made me shiver. I had just began to wash my hair when the power flickered and went out. So I had to hurry up and rinse what I could out of my hair in the dark. Usually my back up generator would have came automatically kicked on but of course it wasn't working right tonight.
I had to go out to the old barn behind my historical farmhouse to see what was going on with the generator. I live in the middle of nowhere and wildlife has been an issue in the past so I grabbed my shot gun as I went out the door on my way to the barn. Rocky, my faithful black and white pit bull was by my side as I stepped off the porch. I immediately felt someone's eyes on me yet I didn't see anyone anywhere around me. Rocky and I ran to the barn and set about fixing the generator. at one point I had to go for a wrench and when I turned round I thought I saw someone right behind me. but when I blinked and rubbed my eyes to focus the dark figure was gone. I ran out the door to see there the figure might have gone but there was no one there and even weirder there were no footprints where I thought I had seen the figure. Maybe I was just over tired from over working myself here lately.
My parents had recently passed away and left me the family farm. I hadn't been back here since I was a child but I had no where else to go and the people I was hiding from would never find me here. That is if they are even still looking for me. The only person who knew I was here was my BFF Cassie. She was probably still asleep in her room upstairs, storms never seemed to bother her. We have been friends our entire life, since we met in preschool. My parents had even let her move in with us when we were teens, not too many years ago, when her mother passed away and her father became abusive.
After a few more minutes I managed to get the generator back up and running again. Finally with the flip of a switch the power was back on. I checked on the horses and other livestock before Rocky and I returned to the house to check on Cassie.
I noticed the time on the stove said five in the morning, time has been flying really fast already today. I started the coffee pot before going up to her room to check on her. As I reached the top of the stairs she came out of her room with a big smile on her face. She had gone out with a new guy last night and I was dying to hear how it went. "Want some breakfast this morning?"
Cassie smiled and nodded before heading down the hallway to the bathroom. So I headed back to the kitchen to make us some breakfast. By the time she came down the stairs, I had the eggs, toast and sausage links all done and on the table waiting for her. But just as we sat down to eat as the sun was finally coming up, although it was hard to tell with the storm, the doorbell rang. We just looked at each other for a moment. then it rang again. Who could be at the door? Especially, this early in the morning way out here in the middle of nowhere?
A chill went down my back and my hair all over my body stood straight up, as a scary thought crossed my mind. Did they find me already? I'm not ready for them yet. Then the doorbell rang a third time. Cassie went to answer the door while I hid. We were sure that they didn't know about Cassie and me. They would surely believe that she had just bought the house from the bank and didn't know me.
We had a secret room under the stairs in the front foyer that I would hide in. Thanks to my security system I could see and hear everything from my hiding spot. I looked at the monitor as I stepped into my hiding place. The man on the front porch was very well dressed. He was all in Black and reminded me of some kind of government agent. He had even pulled up in a Black SUV but something was off about him. I wasn't quite sure what it was but I just knew something wasn't quite right. I quietly warned Cassie to be careful as she shut the bookcase hidden door to my secret spot and headed to the door. The doorbell rang a couple of more times before she reached the door. He was clearly getting impatient. I looked handsome yet very intimidating at the same time. I almost couldn't breathe as Cassie opened the door still in her bathrobe and her hair was all a mess. "Do you even know what time it is?" she started with her own unique attitude. "Most decent people are sleeping at this time of day! Especially in a storm like this!"
He just stood there for a minute as if he were in shock, but he quickly regained his composure and asked when the last time she had seen me. After a couple of minutes he seemed to believe her story and turned to leave. she stopped him asking "Before you leave, which agency did you say you work for?"
"I didn't" He gruffly responded with a devilish smile before climbing back into his SUV and leaving.
I couldn't believe it we hadn't been back here a week and they had already found me in there no where to run and be safe. I just want to live in peace. Will I every be able to break free from the past and finally start over?
I don't even know how they could have found me. No one from that circle knew anything about my childhood, they didn't even know my real name how could they possibly have found me here? I haven't even left the property since we got here. There's no way for anyone to have seen me.
Within minutes a motorcycle pulled up, a big tough looking older biker looking type man was riding it. When Cassie saw who it was she screamed and ran right out the door. I watched the cameras for a while to make sure we she was ok. while she was out there the Black SUV came back and tried to get forceful with Cassie. The biker stepped in between them apparently demanding respect and suddenly the whole house was surrounded by bikers on bikes. I don't know where they all came from they were just there and for whatever reason the men in suits just shut up, got back in their SUVs and left. Nothing made any sense to me but I knew I would understand very soon.
