It felt good to be back at the hospital. The familiar scent of antiseptic and medicine, while uncomfortable to others, grounded me.
I could barely sleep all last night after everything that happened, my mind kept replaying the incidents of the day and coming up with its own interpretations. Here, I could stop thinking for a few hours because all that mattered were my patients.
“Eighty five year old female in room twelve,” a nurse said as she handed me the chart. “They say you’d be best equipped to deal with her.”
“Thank you. What’s she in for?”
“Severe arthritis and some pain in her spine. She refuses to take any pain killers.”
I headed for the room and knocked before pushing open the door.
“I must say, you’re the first person to knock before coming in,” the woman drawle
