Chapter 55

Donovan’s POV

I watch as this tiny female takes down my cousin with ease. I take into account that he is not in full on attack mode because he doesn't want to do this, but she’s not even giving him a chance. Curtis is not the chauvinist prick Uncle Ethan is and has no problem with women being Alpha’s. I know he didn’t want to do this challenge. Now he’s waiting for Claw to heal him, which may take a day or so. During this time, he will be in a lot of pain and moving around won’t be easy. The stupid thing about it is, Uncle Ethan is going to blame Annalisa for him being hurt. He will never admit that he is to blame because he put Curtis in the situation in the first place. My dad, brother and I went to the hospital to sit with Curtis after he was injured. We had heard of Crane and knew she would win the next round of skill drills. Though it was hard for him to talk, Curtis told us he was not onboard with his father’s views. We agreed with him. If a woman is qualified and wants to hold the title of Alpha, there is no reason she shouldn’t. And Annalisa having to prove herself is stupid, when none of the male heirs had to.

My dad is Curtis’s oldest uncle. Our grandparents had three males and two females. My Aunt Trudy is the eldest and would have been the one to take over the Alpha position in our pack, but like my uncle, grandpa would never allow that. I truly don’t think Aunt Trudy would have wanted to be Alpha though, it’s not in her personality to be an Alpha and she makes an amazing Luna. My dad as the second oldest, became Alpha of the pack. Uncle Ethan and Uncle Arthur are twins and the youngest, they both married alpha daughters, thus taking over their packs. Dad spoke with Uncle Arthur and his son Roger. They, too, believes women should be allowed to be alphas. So the only one with this backwards way of thinking is Uncle Ethan, and his son is paying the price for it.

I like my dad am the second-oldest child. My brother Philip is two years older than me and took the Alpha role a year ago. We discussed me becoming his Beta, but did not think it was fair to take the role and birth right from his best friend and the previous Betas son William. So, I am one of the lead warriors of the pack and have been trying to convince my parents to let me apply for elite warrior training. More trying to convince my mom. Dad is more than okay with it, but mom does not want me to leave for the three months of training. Then the long assignments I could be put on once I complete training.

I know my brother has no problem with female Alphas. He met his mate and our current Luna Daisy at an Alpha meeting when he was 19. Daisy would have been a wonderful Alpha for her pack, as she was the firstborn. But due to the laws, her younger brother inherited the role of Alpha. To be honest, she was a lot more qualified than Rodrick. He is an okay Alpha, but Daisy would have been so much better. Luckily, she met my brother and though she owns the Luna title, they run the pack more like two Alphas. I love their dynamic and how they work together as a team.

I have not found my mate yet. My father hopes I get mated to an alpha's daughter and get my own pack. He supports my plan to become an elite warrior but wants me to ultimately be an alpha. He says it’s who I was meant to be. Since I won’t take a chosen mate, we will wait to see what the Goddess has planned for me. I informed them that I had offered my team of warriors to Annalisa to help her at Dark Hollow. Listening to her story and hearing about the other women who were kidnapped and sold by them, I could not sit by and not help anyway possible. I have met that prick Blake at social functions and would love to kill him. My cousin was raped at a party and though she refuses to talk about it I believe it was him. I would love for her to meet Annalisa. Maybe if she knew that she wasn’t the only one she would open up to talking about it. I would first talk to Annalisa and see if she is open to me putting her in contact with Loren. When I met Annalisa earlier today, there was a pull to her. I know it is a mate pull but it is not very strong. And based on her reaction to me, she does not feel it at all. Her scent affects my wolf, Blaze, but not to the degree we would think a mate bond should be. I know there is something there, and I would love a chance to talk to her about it.

My dad and brother went back to have lunch and mingle with the other Alphas. The challenge has ended and King Nicholas, Alpha Xander, Luna Teresa, Alpha Derrick, Alpha Thane and Luna Tessa have all come to check on my cousin. Uncle Ethan, the sore loser that he is, has not come by. I mention to the King and other Alphas that another issue to address is the requirement for an alpha to pass down the title. Though many alphas want their sons to have their Lunas before they take over the pack, it is not a requirement. Many are now waiting and looking for their fated mate and, because of this, must wait to take the title. Curtis is one of those; Uncle Ethan told him he won’t give him the title until he has his luna. He also has picked someone for Curtis and is upset that he is not onboard with taking a chosen mate. I am sitting with my cousin watching television in his hospital room when I smell her, and Blaze starts to prance in my head.

“Calm down! You don’t even know if she is our mate”

“The bond may be dull, but her scent still arouses me. And seeing her wolf today has increased my desire for her”

“I will talk to her, but please calm down. You are giving me a headache”

Right then she knocks and slowly walks into the room. She has changed into a blue dress that is a little lighter than her beautiful blue eyes. Blaze is right. It may be dull, but there is definitely something there. She smells like chamomile, and it’s arousing and soothing at the same time. Her eyes have a sparkle that ignites an excitement in my soul. I didn’t know things like this were possible. If this is a dull bond, what will a full bond feel like? s**t!

“Alpha Curtis? I wanted to come to see you. Is it okay” she says timidly

“Sure, come in Annalisa” Curtis says happily

“You never know how someone you put in the hospital will respond to you. So, I tend to proceed with caution”

“This is not your fault. We were sparring and when you spar there’s a possibility that you can get hurt. I will be fine by tomorrow. It is even easier for me to talk now, my wolf is healing me. How are you?”

“I am fine, thank you for asking. Can I ask did you mean what you said before the challenge began?”

“100%, I don’t agree with my dad. If a female has the same breeding and teaching as a male, there is no reason, she shouldn’t be an alpha. My cousin Philip’s wife was the firstborn of her pack and would have been an amazing Alpha. She is his Luna now, but they are so in sync that they run the pack like two Alpha’s. I hope I get a strong mate like Daisy. I will definitely be signing your petition, along with most of my family. Only my dad has an issue with it which I don’t understand. I wish you luck in getting the law changed”

“Thank you. There is something else I would like to offer, but I need you to keep it a secret”

“Sure” Curtis says confused

She walks up to Curtis’s right side. She touched his ribs, and I let out a growl. They both look at me questionably and I avert my eyes. She then touches him again and a soft red-light shines from her hands. After a few minutes, she steps back, and Curtis takes a deep breath.

“You healed me?”

“Yes, but please keep it to yourself. We can say when I visited, I bought one of the healers and she was able to heal you”

“Not a problem. I will not tell a soul. Thank you so much Annalisa. I do have a question. Did you hug someone recently? There is a scent on you that I think belongs to my mate”
