Chapter one: The meeting.
Ethan meandered along the meandering woodland path deep within Silverwood, where the canopy of the forest kissed the sky and secrets lurked in the shadows. With its silvery light painting the environment in shades of grey, the low moon threw a melancholic tint over the woods. Soft footsteps pattered over the woodland floor, echoing a cadence that matched the thudding in Ethan's heart. Ever since his parents disappeared years ago, Ethan had been used to the strange silence of the forest and the whispers of werewolf lore that followed him everywhere. However, there was a palpable electricity in the air tonight that made Ethan's neck hair stand on end. It felt like electric tension. He accelerated his steps, all of his senses acutely aware as though something or someone may suddenly materialize from the forest's depths. A low growl that sounded through the trees like a primordial warning reached Ethan just as he was ready to write off his uneasiness as paranoia. His heart stopped a beat, causing him to stop dead in his tracks and find it difficult to breathe. Ethan swallowed hard and looked around, his eyes darting from shadow to shade, trying to find where the sound was coming from. Then he noticed it: two bright eyes that shone like stars in the night. Ethan groped for the pocketknife he consistently carried with shaky hands, wrapping his fingers around the well-known handle. He stepped forward gingerly, heart thumping in his chest, steeling himself. When he got closer, Ethan saw the outline of a wolf, its amber eyes staring at him with such intensity that it sent shivers down his spine. The wolf's fur was bristling with tension. He froze, not knowing what to do, but there was something in the wolf's stare that captured his attention—a wordless cry for assistance. Disregarding the inner voice alerting him to the potential hazards present in the woodland, Ethan approached the injured creature with methodical and patient steps. The wolf stiffened, its body contorted like a spring, prepared to charge at the least provocation. However, Ethan persisted, a sense of resolve that he couldn't quite put his anxiety under. He saw the depth of the wolf's injuries as he crouched next to it: blood stained the forest floor, and its sleek fur was marred by gore. Ethan stretched out to examine the wounds with shaky hands; his touch was tentative but compassionate. At his touch, the wolf winced and let out a faint whine, but it did not attack. Rather, it gazed at him with eyes that seemed to be filled with a wealth of secrets, a wordless cry for comprehension. Then, as if in a flash of light, the wolf changed right in front of Ethan's eyes, its body bending and changing until she appeared before him as a vision of ethereal beauty, her eyes wide with astonishment and dread. As he took in what he was seeing, Ethan gasped, his breath stopping in his throat. He'd heard the legends, of humans cursed to change into werewolves beneath the full moon, of humans hiding in the dark, but he'd never really believed them until now. "Who are you?" Disbelief swirling in his mind, Ethan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. With her eyes darting all over as though trying to find a way out, the woman shook her head. She shook her head and said, "I don't know." "I don't remember anything." Feeling that this experience was just the start of something far bigger and darker than he could have ever imagined, a sense of gloom descended upon Ethan as he assisted the woman in standing up. He had no idea that their chance meeting would kick off a series of events that would alter their lives irrevocably and bring them into a dangerous, mysterious, and magically ancient realm. And they could only wonder what mysteries the forest held and what difficulties awaited them in the shadows of Silverwood as they stood beneath the silvery sky, two souls bonded by fate. A rustle in the neighboring underbrush broke the enchantment of calm that surrounded them, and before Ethan could say another word, his mind raced with a flurry of questions. With a tense expression, he moved reflexively to protect the woman, who had introduced herself as Luna, from any potential threat hidden in the shadows. A silhouette that was covered in the night's darkness surfaced from the shadows. With his senses razor sharp, Ethan's palm closed tightly around his pocketknife, ready to defend Luna and himself from whatever threat that might arise. However, as the figure got closer, Ethan's eyes got bigger with recognition and he let go of the knife. The recognizable figure was covered by the tattered shawl of Mrs. Jennings, the elderly widow who lived on the outskirts of town. "Ethan, is that you?" With a soft murmur, Mrs. Jennings called out, calming the agitated night air. Ethan nodded, a wave of comfort washing over him when he realized they were not alone in the jungle anymore. "Yes, it's me," he answered, sounding more composed than he actually felt. Mrs. Jennings turned to face Luna, her brows narrowing in suspicion as she saw the young woman standing next to Ethan. She questioned in a curious tone, "And who might this be?" Luna moved forward, her stance tight but stubborn, before Ethan could respond. Despite the doubt that persisted in her gaze, she said, "I'm Luna," in a clear and strong voice. With a penetrating yet surprisingly kind stare, Mrs. Jennings observed Luna for a minute. With a gleam of humor in her eyes, she said, "Well, Luna, you've certainly picked an unusual place to go for a stroll." Luna nodded, her lips slightly curving into a smile. "You could say that," she shot back, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. Ethan couldn't get rid of the impression that Mrs. Jennings' visit was more involved than it first appeared as she turned to go. But before he could say anything about his suspicions, Luna put a hand on his arm, bringing him back to the present. Luna whispered, softly yet firmly, "We should go." "It's not safe to linger here." Ethan nodded, his head still spinning from what had happened to him that night. He took Luna's hand in his and, after giving the woodland one last look, they walked back to town, their footsteps resonating in the silence of the night. They had no idea that their encounter in the forest was just the start of a voyage that would take them through perilous situations, intriguing situations, and unexpected turns of events. They could only speculate about the mysteries that awaited them and the difficulties that awaited them in Silverwood's shadows as they emerged from the shadows and entered the light of the starry sky. The only sounds on the return trip to town were the hoot of an owl in the distance and the rustle of leaves from time to time. Though he was at a loss for words, Ethan's mind was racing with inquiries. Luna appeared to be buried in her own thoughts as well, her eyes concentrated on the route ahead and her countenance indistinguishable in the faint moonlight. Ethan felt his senses sharpen as they approached the town's edge, and a sinking feeling of foreboding took hold. With its windows dark and dead and its streets strangely silent, Silverwood looked abandoned. As though the town itself was holding its breath, anticipating that something or someone would finally break the stillness. Ethan looked at Luna, his eyes scouring her well-known face for comfort. But her features were furrowed with worry, her eyes clouded with confusion, and she appeared as lost and confused as he felt. Breaking the uneasy stillness that lingered between them, Ethan volunteered, "We should go to my bookstore." "It's not far from here, and we'll be safe inside." Luna gave a faint nod, relieving Ethan of his tense feelings. Walking through Silverwood's empty streets together, their hearts heaving with the uncertainty they faced, they could hear their footfall resonating on the cobblestones. Ethan felt a tingling sensation creep up his spine as they got closer to the bookstore. Something seemed off; there was a strong sense of foreboding and an electric tension that seemed to be charged in the air. With his thoughts racing with a plethora of options, Ethan hesitated, his hand lingering over the doorknob. However, the door creaked open before he could take action, exposing a man standing in the dimly illuminated interior. A wave of relief washed over Ethan when he saw Sarah, his friend and coworker, with her shocked, drawn face and wide eyes. Sarah's voice quivered with passion as she said, "Ethan, thank goodness you're safe." "We heard there was trouble in the forest, and we didn't know what had happened to you." With his heart thumping in his chest, Ethan and Luna shared a look. There's trouble in the forest? What could Sarah be trying to say? Sarah moved aside before he could ask his inquiries, letting Ethan and Luna go into the security of the bookstore. Ethan couldn't get rid of the impression, though, that they were entering a tempest that would put their bravery, fortitude, and mutual trust to the test as soon as they stepped beyond the threshold. They had no idea that their encounter in the forest was just the start of a voyage that would take them through perilous situations, intriguing situations, and unexpected turns of events. They could only speculate about the mysteries that awaited them and the difficulties that awaited them in Silverwood's shadows as they entered the bookstore's comfort and security.
