Prologue: Broken Vows
Odessa's POV
"Divorce papers?"
"Yes, Odessa. Divorce papers." My husband replied bluntly as if reading out a grocery list.
"W—Why?" I stuttered in disbelief, trying to fit the pieces together. What reason did my husband have to hand me divorce papers on a random day when we had no problems with our marriage?
"I'm letting you go," Caspian said. We were in his office at Wells Energy Solutions, a prominent energy distribution company in Los Angeles. Adjusting his tie, he took his seat on his desk across from me and continued. "I can't stand you anymore."
I stared at him, still unsure if he was drunk this early in the morning, "What do you mean by that, Sweetie?" "I'm your wife, and we love each other."
"Used to love each other!" Caspian cut in. He shifted in his chair, the edge of regret flickered in his eyes but he quickly pushed it away. "I'm not in love with you anymore."
"Is this a joke or something?" I asked. I could feel my chest squeezing in.
I stared at the papers, caught between disbelief and building anxiety. "Tell me Caspian."
"Just sign the god-damned papers!" He fired at me, causing me to flinch at his sudden change of mood.
"Babe, enough of all this madness." I shot back. I could feel tears forming in the corner of my eyes. Still refusing to believe what was happening, I shook it off and picked up my handbag from where I had dropped it on the couch.
Pulling out a report from my bag, I tried to speak to him. "listen. I have something important to tell you…"
"Take this." He cut me off with impatience, tossing a piece of paper to me on his desk.
I picked up the paper with shaky hands, and my heart sank into my stomach. A cheque?
"That should be enough for you to start afresh." His heavy voice broke the truth of the delusion I thought I was still having.
The tears finally came loose, pouring down my dazzling white dress. I could feel my knees going weak, as my red bottoms did little to support me. The report I was holding with me fell out of my hands. Caspian stared at it, questioningly.
It was a pregnancy report. After being married for a year and five months, we were finally going to be welcoming our little bundle of joy. Only this morning, I was filled with determination to make this announcement.
Squatting to the floor, I picked up the report and squeezed it in my palms, my heart heavy with grief, as I held the piece of paper.
"Caspian." I began. "Nearly 2 years of my unwavering love for you in marriage, and this is what I get in return?"
"I have never loved you!" His voice shook through my body.
"Tell me this isn't true!" I cried. "Tell me it's all a joke!"
"Odessa, leave my office, immediately!" Caspian commanded, sudden disdain filling his voice. "And my life while you're at it!"
"I would advise you not to ever come back into my life again, Odessa." He added.
So many questions filled my head. What was I going to tell my parents? What was I going to tell the world?
"Billionaire CEO Caspian Wells files for divorce from wife, barely a year after marriage over alleged…" My mind cooked up the worst-case scenario that would make headlines. This was going to create a massive scandal. My entire life will be ruined.
"Please, don't do this to me."
My husband stared at me. My words seemed to have pinched something in him and he averted his eyes from me.
"Please, Caspian, I'm begging you."
"Let's talk about this." I pleaded further.
"There's nothing to talk about." He yelled, his impatience spilling into anger. "Just leave!"
"Caspian, I'm pregnant."
