Chapter 1: The Unlikely Barista
The snow-capped mountains of New Haven, Connecticut, loomed over Ruby like a promise, their rugged beauty a stark contrast to the bleakness of her life. She had been searching for a job for weeks, but every lead seemed to end in rejection. Her mother, Femi, worked tirelessly as a nurse, but their combined income barely covered their rent, let alone her tuition fees. Ruby had had to put her dreams of college on hold, at least for now.
Ruby knew the pains her mother had to bear to cater for her and her stepbrother, she had to put everything on hold as she navigate through life options, searching for a means to help Femi.
As she walked into "De Morning Coffee" shop, a quaint little place nestled between a pawnshop and a nightclub, Ruby felt a glimmer of hope. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air, enticing her to apply for the barista position. She had always loved coffee, and the thought of working in a cozy shop like this one was a welcome respite from the harsh realities of her life.
The interview was a blur, but Ruby remembered the manager's kind smile and warm demeanor. He introduced himself as Marcus, and within minutes, she was hired on the spot. Ruby left the shop with a spring in her step, eager to share the news with her mother.
That night, as she served coffee to the regulars, Ruby noticed a group of rough-looking men who seemed out of place in the otherwise quaint shop. They whispered among themselves, their eyes scanning the room with an air of superiority. One of them, a towering figure with piercing blue eyes, caught her attention. He was the most striking man she had ever seen, but his gaze was cold, calculating, and dismissive.
Kaleb, the dreaded mafia king, sipped his black coffee, his eyes fixed on the new barista. She was young, innocent, and utterly captivating. He had never seen her before, and his curiosity was piqued. What was a girl like her doing in a place like this?
As the night wore on, Ruby's shifts changed, and she found herself struggling to keep up with the demanding pace. The men who had been whispering earlier began to file out, one by one, until only Kaleb remained. He watched her, his gaze unnerving, making her skin prickle with unease.
"You're new here," he said, his voice low and husky, as he approached the counter.
Ruby nodded, her hands shaking as she wiped down the counter. "Y-yes, sir. First day."
Kaleb's eyes narrowed, his gaze raking over her features. "You're trembling. Are you afraid of me?"
Ruby's heart skipped a beat. She didn't know who this man was, but she knew she should be afraid. Yet, there was something about him that drew her in, something that made her want to reach out and touch him.
"I-I don't know," she stammered, her eyes locked on his.
Kaleb's expression softened, just for a moment, before his mask slipped back into place. "You should be," he said, his voice dripping with menace. "You don't know who I am, but you will."
As he turned to leave, Ruby felt a pang of disappointment. She didn't know what she was expecting, but it wasn't this cold, detached demeanor.
The night wore on, and Ruby's exhaustion grew. She had just finished cleaning up when Marcus approached her, a sympathetic smile on his face.
"Hey, kiddo, you did great tonight. I'll walk you home."
Ruby nodded, grateful for the offer. As they stepped out into the cool night air, she noticed a sleek black car parked across the street. Kaleb was leaning against it, his eyes fixed on her.
"Who's that?" she asked Marcus, nodding discreetly towards the car.
Marcus followed her gaze, his expression hardening. "That's Kaleb, the owner of the nightclub next door. Stay away from him, Ruby. He's not someone you want to mess with."
Ruby's heart skipped a beat. She had already messed with him, and she wasn't sure she could stay away.
As she lay in bed that night, Ruby couldn't shake off the feeling that her life was about to change, that Kaleb was the catalyst for a transformation she wasn't sure she was ready for.
