Chapter 1: The Comfortable Life
Maya Chen was 22 years old and lived in a tiny apartment above a bakery in Portland, Oregon. Every morning, she woke up to the smell of fresh bread and cinnamon rolls. Her life was simple and predictable, just the way she liked it.
She worked at a coffee shop called The Daily Grind three days a week. The rest of her time was spent doing what she loved most: playing drums for her best friend's band, The Thunder Cats. The band wasn't famous or anything special, but they had fun together. They practiced in a garage and played at small bars on weekends.
Maya was dating a boy named Tommy Rodriguez. Tommy was 17 and still in high school. They met at the arcade six months ago when Maya was playing Street Fighter. Tommy challenged her to a match and lost badly. He asked for her number anyway.
Their relationship was easy. They ate pizza, played video games, and watched movies. Tommy was sweet and kind, always texting her good morning and good night. But if Maya was honest with herself, she felt more like his babysitter than his girlfriend. Still, it was comfortable. No drama, no problems.
Maya's best friend was Jordan Lee, who played guitar and sang for The Thunder Cats. Jordan had big dreams of getting signed to a record label. The other band members were Carlos on bass and Amy on keyboard. They were like family to Maya.
One Tuesday afternoon, Maya was walking home from the coffee shop when she passed a bulletin board covered in flyers. One caught her eye: "Battle of the Bands - Winner gets signed by Victor Stone Productions!" Victor Stone was a legendary music producer who had worked with some of the biggest artists in the world.
Maya took a photo of the flyer and sent it to Jordan immediately. Within seconds, her phone rang.
"Did you see it?" Jordan screamed into the phone. "This is our chance, Maya! This could change everything!"
The Thunder Cats met that night to talk about entering the contest. They were all excited but nervous. Victor Stone Productions was huge. Could a small band like them actually have a chance?
"We have to try," Jordan said, eyes shining with determination. "We'll never know if we don't."
They all agreed. They would enter the Battle of the Bands.
That night, Maya went to bed early. She was tired from work and band practice. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she fell into a deep sleep.
And that's when everything changed.
