Chapter 6
“A prophecy? About me? What does it say?”
“The King has fallen. Blood of his blood. Born from the Earth, a single flower. The sun rises once more, extinguishing the darkness that once plagued the world. Nature’s balance restored. The King has fallen,” Gigi says smoothly.
“What does that even mean? How do you know it’s talking about me?” I feel like I’m never not going to be confused. My tombstone will probably say ‘Here lies Willow, confused, even in death.’
“My dear, I know it speaks of you, because I was the one who first heard the prophecy,” Gigi responded as Ryker gasped beside me. I’m assuming this meant something important, but here I am, still in the land of the confused.
“What does that mean?”
“It means Gigi is a witch, a very powerful one at that,” Ryker explained as his eyes surveyed Gigi. I could see the gears working in his eyes, but I haven’t the slightest clue what he could be thinking.
“A witch? Then how are you my grandmother?” Forever confused, that’s my new name.
“My dear, I am your grandmother. I raised you as if you were my own and love you as if you’re my own. But, biologically, I am not your grandmother,” She revealed.
“I—I don’t know what to say.” I confess my eyebrows coming together. How can she not be my grandmother when I feel such a deep love and connection towards her? This woman raised me ever since my parents died. Scratch that, ever since my mom ran away from my psychotic sperm donor and offed herself.
“That minute detail doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I am indeed a witch. I am the same witch that cloaked you and your mother, and the same one who developed your elixir. Witches are often given prophecies from the various Gods. We do not always understand what their intentions are, but we deliver them to the supernatural world. Two days after I got this specific prophecy, your mother showed up at my door. She told me she was pregnant, was convinced it was a girl and that she was going to name you Lily. The instant she said Lily, I knew the prophecy was about this unborn pup in her belly. I told your mother of the prophecy, and together we decided to change your name to Willow. Something still in nature, but nothing that would alert anyone who has heard the prophecy. That’s also when we decided to subdue your wolf and raise you in the human world. With your wolf subdued and mixed with the scents of humans, it would be hard for someone to find you. The more you believed and acted like a human, the safer you would be.” Gigi is a witch. A freaking witch! My life is starting to feel more and more like a Harry Potter movie. I wonder if she flies around on a broom. Are vampires real? Can garlic really kill them?
“What does this prophecy mean?” I try and keep my mind on track.
“It means that you shall defeat the Alpha King. Nature will restore its balance by having you end his reign of terror. The Alpha King used blood magic to overthrow the previous rulers and murdered thousands of wolves, wiping out some packs entirely. He is an extremely heinous and dangerous man. He craves infinite amounts of power, and this prophecy scares him. He is scared that there is someone out there capable of defeating him. Little does he know, she is seated right in front of me,” Gigi spoke with such confidence. How did she expect me, a human, well I guess a werewolf, to defeat this Alpha King?
“What is an Alpha King? Are you an Alpha King?” I turned to Ryker.
“No,” he growled, “I am not an Alpha King. The Alpha King is the ruler of all rulers. When the Moon Goddess created werewolves, she also created a type of monarchy. Yes, there is Alphas to rule over their respective packs, but who was going to keep those Alphas in line? She created a lineage of wolves, pure of heart, stronger, faster, smarter and more powerful than all other wolves. She essentially created a royal family, she created a King Alpha, and his mate, a Queen Luna. Together they rule over all Alphas, deliver punishments where necessary and try to keep peace and order between packs.” If my sperm donor is a King, does that mean I’m a Princess?
“A Luna?” This was a new term, I guess I could add it to the long list of new things I was learning today.
“Yes, an Alphas mate is called a Luna. Together they rule over a pack as equals. Both have the authority to command the pack, to lead the pack into battle and to care for the members of the pack. Should you accept me, you will one day become my Luna.” Ryker tucked a loose strand of my raven hair behind my ear, his fingers trailing along my jaw, sending a course of electricity though my body.
“Accept you?”
“Uh, yeah. Even though the Moon Goddess created us for each other. Even though we fit together like perfect puzzle pieces, she did not take away our free will. Either mate has the choice to reject their mate. It’s not something that happens often, and it is quite painful for both parties. I’ve heard it feels like someone has reached into your chest and is squeezing the life out of your heart, one beat at a time.” He seemed to have regretted telling me that rejection was an option. Was he scared that I would reject him? Will I?
“Why would someone do that, especially if it is physically painful?”
“Sometimes it’s about the title.” Chels piped in.
“Title?”
“Ryker here is an Alpha, that’s the highest rank in a pack. Followed by the Beta, Gamma, some packs have Deltas and then the head warriors. Average wolves are considered Omegas. Sometimes a wolf of a higher ranking, such as an Alpha, would reject a lower ranking wolf, such as an Omega out of fear their pups wouldn’t be strong enough. Some reject out of vanity, not wanting to ruin their reputation by being mated with a lower ranked wolf. Some lower ranked wolves will reject their mate in hopes a higher ranked wolf will take them as their chosen mate. Really, it’s no different than the human world, except humans don’t have a destined mate.”
“What’s a chosen mate?” So. Many. Questions. My brain is going to pop.
“Sometimes when people can’t find their mate, or their mate dies, they choose to be with someone else. It’s called a chosen mate because the human chooses instead of the Moon Goddess.”
“What would my rank be?”
“It’s hard to say. Technically your father was an Alpha and your mother a Luna, that would make you next in line to be an Alpha. But, when your mother left, she abandoned the pack. When you abandon the pack, you are stripped of all rankings. Your mom essentially became a rogue, which is considered the lowest of the low. Rogues are packless, they tend to live in small groups and move around as they’re often the victims of attacks.”
“Does that mean I’m a rogue?” If I’m the lowest of the low, does this mean Ryker will reject me?
“I guess you would be,” Chelsea tapped her fingers on her chin, deep in thought.
“I’m not going to reject you.” Ryker looked down at me, his blue eyes filled with sincerity. Okay, now I’m convinced he can read my mind. Hey Ryker, if you can read my mind say ‘potato’. I stared into his eyes, waiting for him to say potato, but he never did.
“Can you read minds?” I blurted out before I could stop myself.
“No.” Ryker began to laugh, one of those deep belly laughs. His laugh shook the sofa we were on slightly.
“Why are you laughing at me?” I crossed my arms.
“Sorry, you just looked so terrified that I could possibly read your mind. It’s probably because of all the dirty thoughts you’ve been having about me, right?” He wiggled his eyebrows at me and tapped his finger on my nose. Gigi cleared her throat and raised her brows at us, but she couldn’t help the small smile on her lips from forming.
“I don’t have dirty thoughts about you.” At least not yet. He is a fine specimen, who wouldn’t have dirty thoughts about him?
“Sure, little flower.” He patted my head. Even as he pets me, those darn sparks erupted all over my skin.
“I am not a dog, don’t pet me.” I grumbled.
“I mean, technically…” He elbowed me gently. I groaned realizing what he meant. Technically I’m a werewolf, half human, half wolf, so I was indeed a dog.
“What would your rank be Chels?” I changed the subject.
“Well, my parents are still part of a pack, they just chose to live in a human city. They go back very often for any pack needs. So, we’re all Omegas.”
“How did our parents know each other?”
“Your mom and my mom grew up in the same pack. When my mom met my dad, she joined him in his pack. When your mom realized you were in danger she reached out to my mom, the only person she felt like she could truly trust. The only people who know who you really are, are the people in this room and my parents. It’s been incredibly difficult keeping this all from you, and everyone else. We couldn’t risk your father catching wind of your existence, especially when you were too young and small to do anything.” She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she spoke.
“Who is my mom’s mate?” I refuse to ever call that man dad or father. He seemed more like Satan than anything else.
“Are you sure you want to know?” Chelsea asked, looking at my grandma for permission, she gave a small nod.
“Yes, if this man is after me, I need to know who he is.” I was ready, I haven’t passed out from shock quite yet. Though my brain did feel it was reaching maximum capacity and that it may explode through my skull at any moment.
“Your father is Aziz, the Alpha King.” Gigi said, but instead of looking at me, she was looking at Ryker.
