The Words
And Then She Said...*
*Chapter 1: The Words*
It all started the first time I heard her say it.
I was tying my shoe.
We were late for something. I can’t even remember what.
But I remember her voice.
_"A life without you makes me lose my other part."_
That’s what she said.
And from that day, I started noticing how quiet my apartment was when she wasn’t there.
Ever since I heard her say that I haven’t been myself.
I try focusing on work, on the gym, on everything I used to do... but my mind keeps going back to her.
It felt like her words were a spell on my heart.
We’re just roommates. But I never thought the connection could get this deep.
And ever since that day, she’s been distant. More than I can handle.
But I know that’s not the real her.
We’re both shy. We don’t know how to say what’s on our minds.
I was a loner my whole life until I met her.
Now I’m still a loner... because all I hear is that sentence ringing in my head.
In the mornings I wake up and breakfast is already made. She’s gone.
After work I go by her office in downtown Chicago but I never catch her.
When I get home I knock on her door. She’s inside.
Playing love songs so loud she can’t hear me knock.
One night I came home and didn’t touch the dinner she made.
I went straight to my room thinking, _why is she doing this to me?_
Like I’m a prisoner to the way she makes me feel.
I have her number so I texted her.
Told her how I’ve felt for months.
My hands were shaking while I typed it.
She read it. Never replied.
And I had no idea she was in her room that same night, thinking about us, while I was mad at myself.
I didn’t know we both wanted the same thing.
*Chapter 2: The Distance*
After that text and her silence, I stopped eating her food.
I stopped texting.
But I didn’t know I was exactly what she was looking for too.
I changed my attitude. Changed everything.
But she still cared.
And deep down, I still had feelings.
Just being stubborn and hard-headed.
Six months later she moved out. Got her own apartment across town.
That’s when I realized we were both idiots.
Anytime I looked out my window at night, I’d see someone watching from across the street.
I didn’t care who.
I even started going to the coffee shop near her office just to see if she was okay.
For 6 months I watched. Not once did I see a guy with her. Just her girlfriends.
I was in love with her and had no idea she felt the same.
*Chapter 3: The Rooftop*
One day I had to know who was watching me.
I told my buddy to wear my hoodie and stand by my window at 8pm.
Then I went across the street to see who was there.
3 hours. Nobody showed.
Whoever it was, they were smart.
So I threw a party at my place. Invited all my coworkers.
Told them I was hosting. Then I snuck out the back and went to that spot across the street.
And my luck hit.
The person walking to that spot... it was her.
Same walk. Same energy. The girl I used to live with.
My chest got tight.
I walked up behind her and grabbed her shoulder.
She turned around.
It was her.
The one who said, _"A life without you makes me lose my other part."_
We couldn’t deny it anymore. It was all over our faces.
Before she could leave I got brave.
Right there on the rooftop of her building. Cold Chicago night. City noise far below.
Just us.
I told her everything. About that sentence. About how I felt.
She was quiet for a long time. Then she talked.
She told me what she’d been holding in.
That without me, she felt like she was losing herself.
We talked for hours.
My phone buzzed. "Everyone’s leaving the party."
I ignored it. Because I was with the person my soul needed.
Then I asked her, "Can you give me a chance to be the guy you deserve?"
She smiled. Then looked sad.
But I promised her I’d never let her feel that pain again.
She said, _"Your words are sweeter than honey. I’m not giving you a trial. I’m opening my heart to you."_
From that night, everything changed.
A few months later I got a text at midnight:
_"Can I move back in with you?"_
I replied, _"You’re welcome back. What about your lease?"_
She said, _"We’ll figure it out when I’m back."_
*Chapter 4: Moving Back In*
I was so happy she was being real with me.
I hired a moving van, packed all her stuff from her apartment in 1 hour, and brought her back.
That Friday she moved in.
Saturday we set up her room.
Sunday I took her to dinner, to the movies. We saw _People We Meet On Vacation_.
That night at 9:30pm was our first kiss.
Over an hour.
I wanted her to know it wasn’t about s*x. It was about making her feel safe.
_"A life without you makes me lose my other part."_
Those words were for both of us.
After that she stopped sleeping in her room. She slept in mine.
I made sure she felt loved and safe.
*Chapter 5: The First Fight*
One morning she was up making breakfast before work.
I was still in bed.
On her way to wake me up, my phone buzzed.
She picked it up and read it.
_"Hi babe I miss you. Can we meet at the same restaurant and talk? Love you."_
She didn’t say anything. Just put the phone down.
I woke up, showered, ate, kissed her on the forehead.
She was quiet. I asked what was wrong. She said "nothing."
At work I saw the message. It was my ex.
The one I blocked months ago. I don’t even know how she got my new number.
After work I tried to explain.
But she cut me off. "Have you met up with her? Did you talk?"
"STOP. I called you here to explain," I said.
She walked out.
I didn’t blame her. I blamed my ex.
For weeks she was cold. I begged. I bought her favorite coffee. Nothing.
But I wasn’t giving up. We just started.
I prayed this was the one I didn’t want to lose.
*Chapter 6: The Make Up*
The apartment was too quiet.
She still cooked. Still went to work. But no talking.
One night I didn’t beg. I just sat in the living room and waited.
When she came home at 8pm she tried to walk past.
I said, "Babe, wait."
She stopped but didn’t look at me.
"I’m not here to fight. I just want to talk. One time. If you’re done with me after, I’ll understand."
She sat on the other side of the couch.
My heart was pounding.
I told her about me. About being scared to lose her.
About how _"A life without you makes me lose my other part"_ was real to me.
"I messed up by not telling you sooner. But I’m here now. Give me a chance and I’ll prove it every day."
She was quiet. Picking at her nails.
Then she said, "You make me overthink so much."
"I know. I’m sorry."
She looked up. Eyes red.
"I don’t want to fight anymore. I’m tired."
"Me too. Just us."
That night we talked till 2am. About nothing. About everything.
When she left my room she said, "Goodnight."
First time in weeks.
From then, things got better day by day.
Because love isn’t just "I love you".
Love is "I choose you" even when it’s hard.
*Chapter 7: "I Love You"*
Sunday evening. Rain outside.
Power was on for once.
We were in the kitchen. She was making pasta. I was cutting onions and crying.
"Big guy crying over onions," she laughed.
"Only because of you," I said.
We ate on the floor. Just trays and talking.
Then the power went out.
In the dark she said, "I used to think love was loud. Fights, big gifts.
But this... this quiet with you. This is love too, right?"
My heart raced.
"Babe..."
"Hmm?"
"I love you."
10 seconds of silence. Just rain.
Then a small nervous laugh.
"You took forever to say it," she said.
"What?"
"I love you too. You idiot."
I grabbed her hand in the dark. Warm.
We didn’t kiss. We just sat there holding hands.
She leaned on my shoulder.
"A life without you... I would’ve lost my other part."
"Same here."
That night was the first night we said "I love you" and meant it.
No doubt. Just us.
*Chapter 8: The First Trip Together*
After "I love you" we needed a break.
Friday I said, "Pack a bag. We’re leaving tomorrow."
"Where?"
"Just trust me."
Saturday 6am. Bus to a small lake town outside Chicago.
No plan. Just us and one bag.
She sat by the window with headphones.
I kept looking at her.
"What?" she said.
"Nothing. You’re beautiful."
She blushed and hit my arm.
We hit the beach. No tickets. Just sand and fishermen.
She ran barefoot. I recorded her.
"Delete that!"
"Never. Evidence."
We ate corn and fish on a rock.
"I’ve never felt this peaceful," she said.
"Me neither."
We checked into a small motel. Fan, bed, lake view.
Power went out that night. We laughed and ate ramen by flashlight.
That night we talked about our pasts. About being scared to love again.
"I used to watch you from across the street because I was scared," she said.
"I waited at that coffee shop because I thought you moved on," I said.
Two idiots.
She put her head on my chest.
"You good?"
"I’m home."
Sunday we went to a farmer’s market.
3 hours of traffic back. She slept on my shoulder.
"Can we do this every month?"
"I’ll be broke."
"I’ll cook for you. Deal?"
"Deal."
That trip showed us we could do broke, no power, and still choose each other.
*Chapter 9: Building Together*
After the trip, we started planning a life.
"I’m tired of rent for a place that doesn’t feel like mine," she said.
"Me too. What if we get our own place?"
So weekends became apartment hunting.
Bus, Uber, walking.
Too small. Too far. Too expensive.
After a month we found it.
One bedroom in Chicago. Not fancy. But good light and water.
Rent was high. "50/50. We build this together."
"Deal."
Moving day was chaos. Friends helped. Sweat and boxes everywhere.
That night we slept on the floor with one blanket.
"It’s empty," she said.
"It’s ours," I said.
First weeks were rough. No fridge. Ice every day.
No table. Ate on the floor.
But every night we planned: "Fridge this month. Bed next month."
Neighbors called us "the couple in 3B".
She sent food to the lady next door. I helped carry groceries.
One night we were broke. $20 left.
"Ramen again?"
We laughed until our stomachs hurt.
We prayed small prayers. "God, help us. We’re trying."
Slowly things came. Raise at work. Her business picked up.
Fridge. Bed. TV.
One year later I came home to pepper steak.
She was in an apron.
"Remember eating on the floor?"
"Yeah."
"Look at us now. We built this."
I held her hand.
"A life without you... I’d have lost my other part."
"And I’d have lost mine."
*Chapter 10: One Year Anniversary*
One year.
I didn’t have money for a fancy hotel.
Morning I woke her up. "Get dressed."
"Where? You’re broke."
"Just come."
First, the mall. I bought her a pink dress with small flowers.
"You have taste now."
