The Meeting
My name is Abby, and I'm raised in a very traditional household where arranged marriages hold great importance. At 20 years old, today marks the meeting between Navin's family and mine for our marriage arrangement. Navin's parents are ten years older than mine, while Navin, the eldest of three sons, remains a mystery in terms of age. I am rather naive when it comes to relationships and marriage. My grandmother once told me that I would make my in-laws happy, elucidating that it involves cooking, cleaning, and managing household chores alongside studies. In two weeks, I'll meet Navin in person. I haven't seen him, though he might have a picture of me from when I was younger. His approval is necessary before finalizing the marriage, a tradition deeply rooted in our families' happiness. Raised in a large and loving extended family, I hope for that same warmth in my future union.
As the two weeks rushed by, I prepared to meet Navin and his family at noon today. Adorned in a new outfit chosen by my mother, I aimed for a modest yet age-appropriate appearance, tidying my very long hair to present myself elegantly.
At 12:00 p.m. today, I awaited the arrival of this man's family at our house, feeling a mix of nerves and curiosity about what he might look like. However, the concept of entering another household was a step in our family, a familiar yet unknown process. At that point, personal love or affection was beyond my comprehension; his approval and liking were the primary concerns. I had no knowledge of his job, height, or any personal details – utterly clueless. His parents were there to confirm his identity, ensuring the right person was presented to me. My family, being astute, understood more about him than I did. Despite my cousins teasing that I was being childish, they believed this meeting would make me grow up. Descriptively, I stood at 5 ft tall with a fair complexion, slim yet curvy with a shapely figure. My eyes were a shade of brown with a sparkling hint of hazel, complementing a small nose, occasionally hidden behind glasses. I had completed my degree in business management and was in pursuit of a job at that time. However, my parents believed that now was the right time to marry, indicating that choices regarding career and motherhood would come in due course and be decided in partnership with my future husband."
