Chapter 14 Eerie silence filled the air, as crushing and heavy as if an elephant was sitting on top of her chest stealing her ability to breathe. Emma Jane normally loved silence. It helped her do her best work. Prior to Vanessa entering her life, Emma Jane had mostly worked that way, rarely speaking with others unless in pursuit of information. She could go days, sometimes even weeks, without talking to another human. But this silence was oppressive. She could see darkness swirling around and was now certain that the house itself had a spirit. She could only hope that it wasn't sentient and able to warn the people she was sure had created the abomination in the first place. She scanned the room, finding nothing of interest. It was simply a dusty attic room, without any objects of concern
