Tears streamed down Emma Jane’s face and Vanessa looked at her with an expression of such understanding it caused more tears to join the ones already there.
"You did what you needed to do, Emma Jane. We both know he was going to kill this girl and would've transformed into a monster if he’d had the chance."
Emma Jane sniffed, wiping the tears off her cheeks as she took a deep breath and set her jaw. "I know. But it never gets easier."
She looked down at the floor, where the dried-out husk of Jean François lay, motionless and lifeless. "He was human. He just made the wrong choices.”
