Chapter One
The bus stopped, and the driver told me it was the last stop. I stepped down and looked at the road ahead. There were just thick, long trees. There were no houses or people around, just an endless trail of trees.
I adjusted my bun and started walking up the driveway, my boots pressing into the soft ground, and my stomach felt queasy with each step, but I didn’t have a choice. I am nearly homeless, struggling to eat a balanced meal, and this job was the only thing that would keep me off the streets, and besides, it came with free accommodation and food, which was all I needed to hear to leave my scummy life behind.
After walking a bit further, I saw the lodge. It was massive, built with stone and dark wood. Smoke came out of the chimneys. It looked expensive but was really quiet.
I walked to the door and tried to push it open, but it opened on its own. Inside the room, I met eyes with two men moving furniture who abruptly stopped when they saw me. "Can I help you?" one of them asked with a slightly rude tone. "I'm Kairia, the new housekeeper." They both exchanged looks as they communicated with their eyes. "Mr Vance is expecting you", one of them said. Before I could respond, audible footsteps came from the staircase, and both men seemed frightened. Then he walked in, Rowan Vance. he was tall and strongly built. He looked serious and in control. He spoke to someone for a few minutes, then locked eyes with me.
He stopped.
He stared at me for what felt like eternity. He took a step towards me, then stopped. "Kaira", he said, "the new housekeeper" "Yes, sir", I replied. He continued staring at me for another minute. " Show her to her room, then bring her to my study", he told one of the workers. He turned and walked away,
After a few minutes, I stood outside his study. The worker had taken me to my room earlier without saying much. I knocked on the huge doors of his study. "Enter", he said with the deepest, most sexy voice I've ever heard. The study was lightly dimmed. Rowan stood by the window with his hands in his pockets. He had such an undeniable good posture that I spaced out for a bit. "Close the door", he said. As I stood at the entrance, there was an eerie silence that you could hear a pin drop. "You shouldn't be here", he said "But sir, I need this job... I signed a contract" he turned and walked closer. "You don't understand this place", he said. “What is there not to understand, and if it’s so mysterious, then explain it to me". he stared for a moment the tension getting thicker and thicker every second then his expression darkened" you need to leave before it happens" he said with a firm voice, " because if you stay I won’t be able to protect you" he stepped back abruptly, I could tell he was trying to control himself like he was fighting demons inside of him. I wanted to argue, question him and ask him why I had to leave, but I could see his arms folding into fists and his eyes gleaming into a shade of black, and with a stern, cold voice, he said: "Leave... before it's too late."
