CHAPTER 2 Someplace SafeTopher woke up in the back of his SUV. It was hot and he was parched, and his shoulder was in horrible pain. Someone had dressed it in an old rag. He peeled it aside, took a peek, and winced. They’d cauterized the wound. His skin was twisted like beef jerky. He struggled to sit up and nearly passed out again. It took all of his strength to crawl to the door, even more to open it. He simultaneously slid and fell out onto the pavement, managing to prop himself up against the rear wheel where he closed his eyes and fought back the nausea. When he opened them, he beheld the most curious thing. The enemy had been arranged, somewhat artistically, on hundreds of metal stakes. Impaled, really. And their heads had been cut off and lay rotting on the highway.
