Isa looked away. “I know the city pretty well.” The streets were cracked, and the cracks were filled with weeds, and the weeds were two feet tall and brown, and some of them had bugs on them, and when they passed the bugs shot up into the air and swarmed around Topher’s arm. Many of the windows in the buildings were broken and jagged. The wind whooshed and barreled down the avenue, bringing with it all manner of dirt and dust and scraps of paper. A sulfuric stench burned in the air at one point, and ash sifted in the ruined gutters.
