MY LIFE
MAYA’S POV
I scrunched up my face in disgust, the feeling of being empty finally enveloping me. I had never felt so irritated like I just did. My body was sore and I needed to rest. No, all I needed was to disappear… into thin air or probably give up the ghost just like my parents did on the day I turned seventeen.
I could still remember their disfigured faces, broken legs, and bloody skin on the hospital beds, that fateful day. I wished it never happened. I wished they never left home to the mall to get me a birthday present.
I just wished…
“That was amazing,” the old man grinned, his dirty touches playing in my head as I watched him get out of bed. This was my third “customer” today… like Uncle Gary always said.
I nodded my head, forcing a smile as I pulled up the sheets to cover myself. I dared not show my discomfort else Uncle Gary would skin me alive or send me out in the streets again and that was the last place I would ever dream of returning to. The streets held ugly memories of me when I had no home after my parents died even though I had a boyfriend but then he suddenly appeared in my life with the news of being my uncle, offering his help to shelter and provide for me. He was caring from the onset but suddenly turned inhumane towards me, ultimately talking me into working for him in exchange for everything he had done for me.
“Your pay…” he hesitated, zipping up his pants. I gazed at him for a while, fighting the urge to tell him to get lost. My pay? Gary wouldn’t even let me touch a penny even though I never intended to.
I turned my face away, forcing back the tears threatening to fall. “Gary will attend to you,” I replied.
He walked over to me, attempting to touch me again. But then I raised my hand in anger, letting it fall on his face forcefully.
“You dirty fat f*ck!” He thundered, clinging to his cheek. “How dare you?” He made his way downstairs
I rose from the bed, hastily putting on my clothes, and dashed out. I needed to see Gary before him else he would definitely say a lot of lies to him and get me in trouble but before I could get there he mysteriously found his way there.
“Fattie, Gary wants to see you,” one of Gary’s girls said as she walked past me, snorting an annoying laugh.
“The dirty fat f*ck is in trouble again,” another voice said, gesturing at me as she spoke to her friend.
“She never tries to lose weight. How does this man do it?” A third voice went off
That was it. Typical every day of my life. Get abused by my boyfriend, get bullied, and face Gary’s wrath. It just never ends.
I breathed heavily, my eyes growing misty. I hated life. I hated everything.
Taking the final sigh, I grabbed the doorknob with my trembling hands, ready to face my uncle.
“Y-you sent for me, Gary,” I said, trying to sound neutral but my voice betrayed me
He didn’t say a word to me but instead, he rose from his chair and walked over to me, giving me a hot dirty slap. “How dare you mess with my business?!”
I broke down in tears, my heart shattering into pieces. All I could think of at that moment was my happy days with my late parents. Why was I going through this? Why was life so hard? And what have I done to deserve all of this? I have been suffering this way for the past seven years and I was yet to see the light at the end of the tunnel. What could I have done wrong?
“He was going to touch me without my consent!” I cried out in tears. “Don’t you think I need a break?”
“A break?” He scoffed. “Maya, don’t be a clown. You practically sold your body to him but you hit him because he tried to touch you again?”
My eyes burnt of hot tears as I gazed at him. What was he getting at?
“You know what?” He tightened his jaw. “You have to clean up the brothels tomorrow before you start your job for the day,”
I took in a sharp breath, falling down on my knees and grabbing his leg. “Gary, please… I don’t want to do this anymore. Please let me off the hook, I would rather work as a cleaner than do this again,” I begged in tears
“Get out of my office right now!” He thundered, yanking me up from the floor and threw me out, allowing me to fall helplessly on the floor. Was he really my uncle? Why me?
Some of his workers walked past me, bursting into laughter. They continuously called me fat and ugly, making a jest of my
looks. I was just 65kg and wasn’t even weighing much, how dare they?
I curled up, tears streaming down my cheeks from my eyes. But as I sat there I noticed someone standing before me. Gradually with my eyes, I trailed from his feet to his face and it turned out to be Leon.
“What’re are you doing there? Have you no shame? You embarrass me so much,” he said, his eyes scanning the premises.
A weak smile tugged at the corner of my lips.
He had arrived. My boyfriend had mysteriously showed up now that I needed him most.
“Get up,” he gave me a light kick
I outstretched my hand, patiently waiting for him to take it but he never did. Disappointed, I swallowed hard and got up on my own.
“What are you doing here?” I managed to say
“I need some money, Maya,” he said urgently “Just $300,”
I folded my hand into a fist, my mouth quivering and before I could stop it, tears began to roll from my eyes and down my cheeks once again.
“Money. That’s it. That’s all you ever want. You don’t even care about me. You just got here, finding me on the floor in tears but you never bothered to ask what happened instead you went on to ask for money!” I said through my teeth, my heart breaking
“Are you indirectly calling me a leech? How dare you?!” He exclaimed, drawing attention to us. “Listen, you should be grateful to me for being with you regardless of your stupid fat self and ugly face!”
“I don’t have any money,” I said sternly, ignoring his comments. It wasn’t new. I was used to it anyway.
“Then do what you’re known for. Sleep with men and get me the money!” He yelled
I stiffened, hearing the uncouth words from his mouth. “I am done with you!” I said, turning to leave but then
he yanked me back, giving me a hot slap.
“You don’t get to call it quits, I do!”
