Chapter 1- The word that broke one year of silence
The mansion was too quiet. 🏚️
Too big. Too cold. Too dead.
I stood at the massive black gates of Blackwood Estate, clutching my cheap handbag that had a broken zipper. My heart was beating like a drum. 🥁 My palms were sweating.
This was the job no one wanted.
“Are you Amara?” The security guard looked me up and down like I was some street girl. “The new nanny?”
“Yes, sir.” I nodded quickly, trying to sound confident. “For little Leo.”
He laughed out loud. A wicked laugh. “Good luck, small girl. The last 7 nannies ran away crying. The kid doesn’t talk. He bites. He screams. And his father...” He shook his head and lowered his voice. “His father will eat you alive. Mr. Blackwood is not a man you play with.” 😈
My stomach dropped to the floor. 😰
But I needed this job more than air. Mama’s hospital bill was $2,000. The doctor said if I don’t bring the money in 3 days, they will remove her from oxygen. If I don’t get this job, my mother will die. 💔
I pushed the heavy gate and walked in. My old shoes made a sound on the clean marble floor.
The house inside was like a palace in a movie, but it felt like a prison. Everything was white, black, and silent. No pictures on the wall. No toys. No life. Just cold money. ❄️💰
Then I saw him.
Xavier Blackwood. 😳
He was standing by the grand staircase, in a black suit, black shirt, no tie. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, showing veined, strong, muscular arms. His hair was black and neat. His jaw was sharp like a knife.
His face... God. He was sinfully handsome, like a devil that knows he is handsome. But his eyes were pure ice. Cold grey eyes that looked at me like I was dirt on his floor.
“You’re late,” he said, his voice deep, low, and so strict it made my knees weak. “I don’t like late. I hate it.”
“I... I’m sorry sir, the bus broke down and I had to walk-” My voice was shaking.
“I don’t want excuses.” He cut me off, stepping closer. He was so tall. So close I could smell his expensive cologne. Sandalwood and power. “Rule 1: Never be late. Rule 2: Never touch my son without asking. Rule 3: Never enter my room, ever. Break any rule and you are fired and you will never work in this city again. Do you understand me, Amara?”
His voice was so cold I shivered. 🥶 But my body was hot. I hated that my body reacted to a man who was insulting me.
“Yes sir,” I whispered, looking down.
“Good.” He stared at me for a second too long, his eyes dropping to my lips. Then he looked away like he was angry at himself. “Leo is upstairs. Second room to the left. He hasn’t spoken a single word in 2 years since his mother died in the accident. Seven therapists failed. If you can make him speak, I will pay you double. $5,000 a month. If you can’t... you leave my house tomorrow. No pay.”
Five thousand dollars?! 😱 My mouth opened. That would save my mother.
He turned and walked away, leaving his scent in the air. Arrogant. Powerful. Untouchable.
I went upstairs, my legs shaking like jelly. In the corner of a huge, dark, lonely room, sat a little boy.
4 years old. Curly brown hair. Chubby cheeks. Wearing a cute green dinosaur pajama with little spikes. 🦖 He was so, so cute but his eyes were empty. Hollow. He was holding a small toy dinosaur tightly and staring blankly at the wall.
My heart broke. 💔
“Hi... Leo?” I said softly, kneeling down slowly so I would not scare him. “I’m Amara. I will be your new... friend. Can we be friends?”
He didn’t look at me. He didn’t move. Like I was invisible.
The other nannies said he throws things, bites, screams. But he just sat there like a beautiful broken doll. 😢
I didn’t know what to do. The strict father downstairs was already counting me as a failure. So I just sat next to him on the cold floor. I didn’t touch him. I remembered Rule 2.
I took out my own small, old, faded dinosaur from my bag - the one my little brother gave me before he died last year. I still kept it.
“Look, Leo. This is Dino. 🦕 He is lonely too. He has no Mama. He wants a friend.” I made the dinosaur walk on the floor, making a small funny voice. “Hello... do you want to play with me? Please?”
For 10 long minutes, nothing. Silence. I was about to cry. I had failed. I was going to be fired on my first day. My mama would die.
Then... a tiny, tiny warm hand touched mine. 🤏
I froze. I looked down slowly.
Leo was looking at me. His big brown eyes were full of fresh tears. His lips were trembling.
And then, with a voice so small and broken and hoarse from not using it for 2 years that I almost missed it, he whispered the word that would change both our lives forever...
“M...Mama?” 🥺❤️
My heart stopped beating.
Downstairs, I heard a loud SHATTER! A glass breaking.
Xavier had heard it. 😨
His son... had spoken for the first time in 2 years... and he called ME, a stranger, a poor nanny, Mama.
Heavy, fast, angry footsteps thundered up the stairs. Like a beast coming.
The door burst open with a BANG! Xavier stood there, his face dark, his fists clenched, his chest breathing hard, his cold eyes locked on me holding his son in my arms.
“What the hell did you just say to my son?!” he growled, his voice dangerous and possessive. 😡
