Amelia Carter stared at the letter in her hands.
Her heart sank.
FINAL NOTICE.
She read the words again, hoping they would somehow change.
They didn't.
“Thirty days,” she whispered.
Thirty days to pay the remaining rent.
Thirty days before the small apartment she shared with her younger brother could be taken away.
Amelia closed her eyes.
She had already lost her job two weeks ago.
Her savings were almost finished.
And now this.
Her phone suddenly rang.
“Hello?”
“Amelia?”
Her landlord's voice came through the phone.
“Yes, sir.”
“I've been patient with you.”
“I know. I'm sorry. I'm trying to get another job.”
“You have until the end of the month.”
The call ended.
Amelia lowered the phone slowly.
She wanted to cry.
But she had cried enough.
That evening, she walked through the city looking for another job. Every office gave her the same answer.
We'll contact you.
Nobody did.
As rain began to fall, Amelia hurried beneath the roof of a luxury hotel.
She had no idea that the man she was about to meet would completely change her life.
Inside the hotel, Damien Blackwood stood beside the window of a private restaurant.
His expression was cold.
“I won't do it.”
His grandmother sighed.
“You don't have a choice.”
“I have plenty of choices.”
“Not this time.”
Damien turned around.
“You expect me to marry a woman I don't love just to satisfy a condition in my grandfather's will?”
“Yes.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Ridiculous.”
His grandmother placed a document on the table.
“One year, Damien. If you are married for one year, the company becomes yours.”
Damien stared at the document.
The Blackwood Group was worth billions.
He couldn't lose it.
“How long do I have?”
“Thirty days.”
Damien's jaw tightened.
Then his eyes moved toward the hotel entrance.
A young woman had just walked inside.
Her clothes were wet from the rain. She looked exhausted, but there was something different about her.
She wasn't looking at the expensive cars.
She wasn't staring at the wealthy guests.
She was simply trying to stay dry.
Damien watched her for a few seconds.
Then an idea entered his mind.
“Maybe,” he said quietly, “I have found my solution.”
His grandmother followed his gaze.
“Who is she?”
“I don't know.”
“Then find out.”
Damien picked up his phone.
For the first time that night, he smiled.
But he had no idea that the woman he had chosen to become his fake wife would eventually become the only woman he couldn't live without.
End of Chapter One.
