Prologue: The Catalyst
The hum of the factory's machines was a constant backdrop to Eryon's life. He worked swiftly, his hands deftly navigating the tangle of wires and gears in the malfunctioning press. The foreman barked orders from across the floor, and the air was thick with the smell of grease and metal. "You'll want to watch that connection," called Zayne, a fellow technician and one of the few friends Eryon had in the factory. "Thanks," Eryon muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. "This one's been sparking all morning." Zayne chuckled. "You know, for a guy your age, you take this job way too seriously." "I have a family to feed," Eryon replied, tightening the final bolt. The factory whistle blew, signalling the end of the shift. Eryon grabbed his bag and made his way home through the crowded streets of Zyvaris. His route took him past the central market, a sprawling maze of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to salvaged tech. "Eryon!" shouted a vendor, a stout woman with a kind smile. "Take some bread for your family." Eryon hesitated, his pride warring with necessity. "I can't pay you back this week." "Don't worry about it," she said, pressing a loaf into his hands. "Just take care of them." In the upper echelons of Zyvaris, the Erythian Heights were a world apart. The streets were lined with sleek hovercars, and every building gleamed under the artificial light. Maximilian Kane stood before a massive window in his penthouse, gazing out at the city below. His sharp features were illuminated by the glow of his holo screen, which displayed the latest financial reports. His suit, tailored to perfection, was as much a statement as his family's name. A soft chime announced the arrival of a message. It was from his father: Remember, the world is ours to command. Max closed the screen with a flick of his wrist, irritation flickering across his face. "And yet here I am, still tethered to his shadow," he muttered. Across the district, Larix lounged in his family's estate, the sprawling mansion surrounded by manicured gardens and guarded gates. He was sprawled across a velvet couch, tossing a gold coin in the air. A servant approached nervously. "Sir, the council is requesting your presence at tonight's gala." Larix smirked, catching the coin. "Tell them I'll consider it... or don't. Let them sweat." The first anomaly was subtle—a faint shimmer in the air above the city. People brushed it off as a weather phenomenon, but scientists scrambled to make sense of the readings. In the factory, Eryon noticed the lights flickering. "Another power surge?" he muttered, glancing at Zayne. "This one feels different," Zayne replied, his brow furrowed. The shimmering grew more intense, coalescing into a tear in the sky. It wasn't just light—it was a void, pulsating with unearthly energy. People gathered in the streets, their faces upturned in awe and fear. Eryon arrived home just as the tear widened. Kael was already on the balcony, pointing excitedly. "Eryon! Look!" Liora and Calen stepped out to join them, their expressions a mix of wonder and dread. "What do you think it is?" Liora whispered. Before anyone could answer, a low hum filled the air. It grew louder, resonating deep in their chests. When the wave hit, the world seemed to shatter. The energy rippled outward, tearing through Zyvaris with unstoppable force. Eryon fell to his knees as the energy engulfed him. His body burned with an intensity that felt like it would tear him apart. When the pain subsided, he opened his eyes to find the world warped and shifting around him. His hands glowed faintly, and when he reached out, the air itself seemed to respond, bending unnaturally. Kael's golden light enveloped him, lifting him off the ground. His cries turned to gasps of wonder as the light coalesced into markings along his arms. When he landed, he clenched his fists, feeling strength beyond anything he'd known. Chaos reigned. A woman screamed as her body erupted into flames, only to realize she wasn't burning. A man crumpled to the ground, his skin now metallic. People either embraced their powers or fled in terror. Eryon stumbled back into the apartment, his vision swimming. Liora and Calen were huddled together, their skin shimmering with faint light. Kael stood in the center of the room, his hands glowing with a golden radiance as he grinned in awe. "Eryon, what's happening? Are you... okay?" Liora asked, her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and wonder. "I don't know," Eryon muttered, his gaze flickering toward the window. The once clear sky was now an unsettling tapestry of swirling, unnatural colours. The rift in the atmosphere pulsed like a heartbeat. "I don't know how to control this. What are we supposed to do?" Calen's voice trembled, his arms flickering with blue sparks. "It's everywhere. I can feel it... like it's in my skin, in my blood. I don't know how to stop it." Kael laughed softly, eyes gleaming. "This is amazing! I can feel the power. It's like I'm connected to everything." He clenched his fists, and for a moment, the entire room seemed to respond—small objects levitating in the air before dropping back to the ground. Eryon caught his breath, realizing his younger brother had already begun to control the power instinctively. His transformation, on the other hand, was far more disorienting. His reality-altering ability was volatile, and his power had manifested as something far more broken and uncontrolled than Kael's simple strength enhancement. Before Eryon could answer, the sound of sirens echoed from the street below. The city was already in chaos—screams filled the air as people ran in every direction, trying to escape the strange transformations that had overtaken their bodies. "This is just the beginning," Eryon whispered, his voice thick with uncertainty. He felt as if the world was crumbling around him, and yet, something inside him stirred. He could sense it, a pull toward something greater—a responsibility for these events, and to his family. From below, they could hear shouting, people gathering in the streets, and more explosions of light in the distance. Eryon turned back toward his family, his heart pounding. "We need to get out of here, now." Maximilian Kane had watched the rift unfold from his penthouse. He had been prepared for many things in his life—wealth, power, control—but not for this. His instincts kicked in as the energy wave rolled through the city, seeping into his bones. The moment the wave struck him, he felt it—an overwhelming surge of power, unlike anything he had ever experienced. His body tensed as the energy rushed through him, transforming him. His eyes burned with a fiery amber glow, the irises taking on a molten hue that reflected the flames that flickered within. The once faint aura of invincibility that had defined him now intensified, coursing through every fiber of his being. He could feel the power of the universe itself bending to his will. "I knew it," Max whispered, as he stared at his hands. "This is the moment everything changes." Below, in the streets of Zyvaris, people struggle with their newfound abilities, some embracing them, others fearing them. Max's gaze shifted to Larix, who had appeared in the chaos of his mansion, surrounded by his closest associates. Unlike Max, Larix seemed calm, almost amused. "Seems like you're finally feeling it too," Max called out, his voice laced with amusement. Larix smirked, adjusting the cuffs of his designer suit. "I always knew the world was on the verge of something grand. Now, it's finally ours for the taking." He extended his hand, and crimson energy crackled around him, forming a swirling vortex that bent the air itself. His powers were a different kind of force—subtle, and manipulative, like the way a snake constricts its prey without ever showing its fangs. "Let's see how far this goes," Larix murmured. Max laughed darkly. "No, let's see how far we go." Across Zyvaris, the energy wave was creating a ripple effect that no one could have anticipated. The rich and poor alike were now finding themselves irrevocably changed by the force that had torn through the fabric of their city. In the streets, people were discovering powers they never thought possible. Some could manipulate fire or wind; others could heal with a touch. Some could duplicate themselves, or create impenetrable barriers around them. As the city devolved into chaos, the government quickly mobilized. Emergency response teams were deployed, though the sheer scale of the event overwhelmed them. But not everyone reacted the same way. While some were terrified, others immediately embraced their newfound abilities. One such individual, a street vendor named Tyla, felt the strange energy coursing through her veins and erupted in a blaze of radiant light. Her eyes turned to a vibrant, electric blue, and for a brief moment, she felt as if she could see through the surrounding walls. "I... I can see everything," Tyla muttered, her voice trembling with disbelief. "I can feel the energy of the city—its pulse, its life. It's all... connected." Another man, a once-political outcast named Kellan, was surrounded by shadows. As the power surged through him, he became darker, his body shifting into an amorphous form. He absorbed the surrounding darkness, turning into an unrecognizable shape. Eryon stood in the middle of his apartment, his thoughts racing. The rift had not just altered his family but the very world. There was a storm brewing, one that threatened to tear everything apart, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was the catalyst for it. His broken ability was a blessing and a curse. He could alter reality, but he could also destroy it. The implications of his power were vast, and the responsibility weighed on him. Yet, there was something deeper—a connection to the rift that felt almost personal. "Where does this leave us?" Calen asked, his voice breaking through Eryon's thoughts. "What are we supposed to do now?" Eryon's gaze shifted to his brother, Kael, who was staring at his hands in awe, his energy pulsing in rhythmic waves. "We survive," Eryon replied softly. "But we need to be ready. For everything." Kael's eyes gleamed with anticipation. "We'll be ready, Eryon. Together." The chaos was just beginning, and Zyvaris would never be the same again.
